There’s a Reason We’re Number 1 “0 TRANS FAT” 864-0911 Miss Muggins Coffee and Fresh Donuts Vol. 12, Issue 11, November 10, 2007 Four-wheeling:the Future of Chapleau? T hat's what the t o p i c o f discussion was at a recent Public Information Session held by the Chapleau AT V C l u b . Ry a n Bignuccolo , director of External Relations, f r o m t h e O FAT V (Ontario Federation of ATV Clubs) spoke to a room packed with interested business o w n e r s a n d AT V recreationalists. Ryan shared information regarding the OFATV. Ryan gave details on how the local club could go about joining the OFATV if they were interested and how local ATVers could join too. For more information go to: www.ofatv.org The group at the presentation was encouraged to attend the AGM (Annual General Meeting) scheduled for November 1st 2007 at Aux Trois Moulins Conference room. The AGM went well. The new board members include: 6 DirectorsSylvain Langelier, Claude Santerre, Andre Byham, Christy-Anne Jacques, Roger Perreault, and Lou Scheid; Fern Gauthier Vice President; and Kathleen Bouchard as President. The club has identified 2 major concerns. One is recreational riding. People would like to join others for Poker Runs or just for a ride to a local resort for lunch or a short stop and to return. The second involves organized trails for tourism. We all could agree that Chapleau needs more tourists here. This issue seems much more challenging and is not at the forefront of what the Club wants to work on for now. For now they will concentrate on finding a way to get insurance to promote organized rides locally. The club is open to ideas and input. For more information call Kathleen at 864-1313 Local nimrods pass the test and carry on tradition By Jim Prince t's the time of year when it seems at least half the population dresses up in orange coloured suits, fuels up the fourwheeler and heads for the nearby forest. It's not some gigantic Hallowe'en party, but for those who join in what takes on an almost festival like atmosphere, this is dead serious stuff. Interest in game hunting continues as a high I Long Term Forecast Saturday High 2 Low -8 Sunday High 3 Low -1 Monday High 7 Low 2 Tuesday High 10 Low 2 Wednesday High 2 Low -2 Thursday High 2 Low -1 level and Chapleau is at the centre of what is considered one of the finest hunting areas anywhere. The woodlands surrounding this community have been providing opportunities for the local residents for as long as anyone can remember and in many cases the sport continues as a long held tradition. So it's no wonder interest shown by residents in obtaining the proper gun handling and hunting licences continues at a high level and thanks to the dedication of one local sportsman, these licences continue to be obtained locally. “There is a renewal of interest in Chapleau,” stated André Byham, who conducted his first session for gun handlers and hunters in 1979. He has just concluded guiding 31 residents through successful completion of the Canadian Firearms Safety Course exam which results in the Possession Acquisition Licence (PAL). This licence is required by persons wishing to aquire typical sporting long guns. At the same time another 20 persons have graduated successfully from the Hunters' Course. Prospective hunters must pass both courses before they can posses a firearm and legally hunt game. Cost of the PAL course and test is $130.ºº while the Hunting Course comes in at $125.ºº Applicants sign up for the sessions, which are conducted on weekends, through the Chapleau Innovation Centre. The 12 hours of training leading up to the license is provided by Byham. It eventually leads to a test, which is supervised by another person. Byham is the only person in Chapeau qualified to conduct the courses and exams leading to the licenses and he came to the position on the urging of local residents. Always an avid outdoors person, Byham, who was also a dedicated educator, was approached by a number of local residents in the late 1970's, who suggested he take up the position, which he did and as a result is the only local person qualified under Canada's Federal Firearms Centre. There are several reasons given for the continued if not renewed interest in firearms possession and hunting locally. High on the list is the matter of family tradition inherent among Northerners. André Byham busy teaching a classfull of students. Families and tradition place a high value on hunting. It's not unusual to see second and third generations of families together in the local woods come hunting season. It seems almost second nature to, every autumn venture out into the local bush, which is teeming with wildlife. Just as it also seems natural for local enthusiast André Byham to provide local residents with the qualifications to carry on what truly has become a local, proud tradition. REMEMBRANCE DAY Royal Canadian Legion November 11th, 2007 at 10:30 Chapleau Express, November 10, 2007 - Page 2 REPORT FROM Queen’s Park BY Mike Brown, Provicial Member of Parliament for Algoma-Manitoulin A D a y T o Remember Wr i t i n g letters and poetry served as a respite for Lieutenant Colonel John McRae during his time of service during the First World War. Though he would pass away before the war ended, his legacy lives on nearly a century later in his most famous poem, ‘In Flanders Fields.’ Despite his own fears, McRae truly believed that it w a s t h e responsibility of every bachelor to fight for his country. In his role as a doctor, he tended to hundreds of wounded soldiers every day, and was deeply affected by the fighting and loss in France. The day before he penned his most famous work, o n e o f M c R a e ’s closest friends died on the battlefield. He was buried in a makeshift grave with a simple wooden cross to mark his resting place. As wild poppies bloomed between the crosses marking the many grave, McRae struggled with his own inability to help his friend, and any of the other soldiers around him who had died. But his frustration gave birth to inspiration, as his Obituary Lavoie, Mrs. Gisele (Robichaud) On October 25th, 2007 at Chapleau Health Services our dear mother lost her battle with cancer but won the victory of eternal life. Our mother was a rare gift to all of us who knew her and cared about her. She was filled with unshakeable faith and touched the hearts of many with her sensitive, caring and thoughtful nature. As a devoted mother she was a continuous example of strength and courage. She was born August 12th, 1929 in Bic, Quebec, daughter of the late Eliane and Louis Robichaud. In addition to her parents, Gisele was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband Adeodat in 1996 and her sister Beatrice Rioux in 2004. Left to cherish her memory are her three children, Ivan (Lynne Ranger) Lavoie, Anne (Robert) Morin and Louise (Hans) Freistatter, eight grandchildren, Nicolas Lavoie, Tim (Chantal) Morin, Mark (Laura) Morin, Ryan, Sara, Hans Jr., Heidi and Katrina Freistatter and two great grandchildren Braeden and Ashton Morin. She is also survived by her loving sister Rita Godbout of Elliot Lake and her nieces and nephews. A funeral mass was held at Sacred Heart Church on Tuesday October 30th, 2007 with father Jacques Fortin officiating. Pallbearers were her grandchildren Tim and Mark Morin, Sara, Heidi and Hans Jr. Freistatter and nephew Richard Rioux. Internment followed at the Chapleau Municipal Cemetery. For those who wish donations to the Sacred Heart Parish or the Chapleau General Hospital Foundation would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements were in care of Gilmartin Funeral Home, Wawa. poem would give voice to the many soldiers who had and would later sacrifice their lives for their country. ‘In Flanders Fields’ is the ultimate tribute to the men and women who served, fought and, in some cases, died so that we could enjoy the freedom we enjoy today. The poem itself is as much a part of Remembrance Day as any other tradition. School children across the country are taught to recite the famous piece for the men and women who have served, and continue to serve, our country during times of war, conflict and peace. Every year on November 11th, we honour those who fought for Canada in the First World War (1914-1918), the Second World War (1939-1945), and the Korean War (19501953), as well as those who have served since then. More than 1,500,000 Canadians have served our country in a military capacity, and more than 100,000 of them have died. They sacrificed their lives and their futures so that we may live in peace. The challenges they faced and the sacrifices they made are something we should never forget. It was the choices that they made that allow us to enjoy the basic liberties today that we sometimes take for granted. With November 11th upon us, let us take time from our days to honour those who have served our country nobly in the face of an uncertain future. And let us give thanks in the knowledge that their efforts and their sacrifices have enabled us to live free and proud in the greatest country in the world. A SPECIAL THANK YOU To our families and friends we wish to express our heartfelt gratitude for your kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity during our time in need. Together we shared sadness, special memories and good laughs. Your help and support in giving Guy his final farewell touched us deeply. A big hug goes out to all of you. Remember to keep your smiley face on. The Brunette’s THANK YOU The families of the late Joseph Germain Paquette would like to thank the many friends and neighbours for all the lovely acts of kindness bestowed on our families. The beautiful flowers, cards, food and memorial donations were greatly appreciated. Special thanks to the Doctors and all the nurses for their wonderful care, kindness, patience and understanding. Thanks also to Fr. Jacques Fortin for the funeral mass and graveside service. Thank you to Gilmartin Funeral Home, especially Sam, for everything. The Chapleau Express P.O. Box 457 Chapleau (Ont.) We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. (Adaptation du poème: In Flanders Fields, de John McCrae) Sickened by what he had seen during the Boer War, John McCrae nevertheless signed up in August 1914, and headed for France with his horse, Bonfire, in tow. He would have found few opportunities for riding in that hell on earth. Knee deep in mud and freezing water, men's feet rotted where they stood, waiting for the next attack of gas to insinuate its way down the trenches, or the signal to go "over the top", often into direct machine gun fire. McCrae wrote "In Flanders Fields" the day after presiding at the funeral of a friend and former student. The original poem (as written) appears above. McCrae was to number among the 9,000,000 fatalities that vicious, fratricidal war of attrition would claim. His asthmatic condition, exacerbated by poison gas, eventually led to pneumonia and meningitis in January of 1918. The twin traditions of poetry and military service came naturally to John McCrae. In Scotland, his family had compiled (and contributed to) the famous Fernay manuscripts of Gaelic poetry between 1688 and 1693. Then, in 1715, and again in 1745, the McCraes fought against the English in the Rebellions. Despite petitioning for timely intervention or public acquisition, Canada's so-called Department of "Heritage" in 1997 allowed Col. McCraes' medals to go up for public auction. They were purchased by a Chinese-Canadian businessman, Arthur Lee, who restored them to the McCrae Museum. Chapleau Express, November 10, 2007 - Page 5 Law Society is one step closer to licensing paralegals CNW/ - Ontario will be the first jurisdiction in North America to license paralegals. Almost 2,200 e x p e r i e n c e d paralegals and graduates of postsecondary paralegal courses have applied to the Law Society of Upper Canada to write the licensing examination in Ontario. Regulation of the paralegal profession will provide consumers with a choice in the legal service providers they wish to use. It also means the public will have access to paralegals who meet high standards of learning, competence and professional conduct. The Law Society's regulatory authority was expanded last year to include paralegals following passage of the Access to Justice Act, 2005. The legislation came into effect May 1, 2007. Since then, the Law Society has created a set of rules of professional conduct for paralegals and developed a licensing program that includes the same kind of regulatory standards used for lawyers. The Law Society offered experienced paralegals six months to enter the licensing process and apply to write a qualifying examination. That "grandparent" opportunity ended October 31. The first paralegal licences will be issued by May 1, 2008 to g r a n d p a r e n t applicants who pass the licensing examination. In the meantime, approved applicants can continue to practise in permitted areas until they are licensed, providing they carry professional liability insurance and comply with the Paralegal Rules of Conduct and Law Society bylaws. Names of g r a n d p a r e n t applicants have been added to the Paralegal Candidate Directory, on the Law Society's website. The ministry emphasized safe hunting practices during the blitz, including the requirements for hunters to wear hunter orange. In some cases officers found hunters were wearing none. Conservation officers also seized 21 moose, down from 57 during a similar blitz last year. They also issued hundreds of warnings. The blitz ran from October 6 to 20 and coincided with the opening of the regular gun season for moose in most of the northeast. The blitz targeted the area from the Hudson Bay and James Bay coasts in the north, to the French and Mattawa rivers in the south, and from the Ontario-Quebec border in the east to Lake Superior and Manitouwadge in the west. For more information on hunting regulations, please consult the 2007 Hunting Regulations Summary, which is available from licence issuers, some ministry district offices, ServiceOntario/Gover nment Information Centres, and on the ministry's website at www.mnr.gov.on.ca/m nr/pubs/pubmenu/ html. To report a natural resources violation, call 1-877TIPS-MNR (8477667) toll-free any time or contact your local ministry office during regular business hours. You can also call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800222-TIPS (8477). Tips on how to stay light and healthy during the holiday season (NC)—This holiday, stay healthy by cooking California style. ADVERTISE IN THE CHAPLEAU Cut out the sugar – why not use fig puree instead, which can act as a sweetener or fat substitute in a variety of recipes. In a blender, puree 250 grams of figs with 1⁄4 to 1⁄3 cup of water or fruit juice (naturally sweetened). To r e d u c e cholesterol intake – substitute rich spreads like mayonnaise or butter with a fresh slice of avocado on sandwiches and toast to reduce your intake of cholesterol, calories, fat, saturated fat, and sodium. Stock up on leafy greens – instead of steaming your spinach, try sautéing it in a bit of olive oil which will help absorb up to five times as much of the vision-protecting antioxidant betacarotene. Although the training was intensive and very thorough as it included a combination of lectures, group discussions and handson practice, these participants are ready and more than willing to move forward to Level II in the very near future. Once they have completed the required 3 levels, they too will be Reiki Masters. Way to go ladies! The word Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) is a Japanese kanji for universal life-force energy. Reiki is a Japanese holistic, lighttouch, energy-based modality. Working as a support mechanism to the body, Reiki reestablishes a normal energy flow of ki (life force energy) throughout the system, which in turn can enhance and accelerate the body's innate h e a l i n g a b i l i t y. Through a series of hand positions either directly on or just above the body, the energy worker allows for the flow of energy through their body. The client’s body then draws off the amount of energy that is required. The simplicity of a Reiki session may raise some skepticism, however, after experiencing it, many clients keep coming back for more of those relaxing feelings. Reiki is simple and produces measurable results. It is power, light and love. Reiki transcends the man-made divisions of religion, economics, location, gender, and race. There has been a 350 per cent increase in the number of people killed while not wearing a helmet nine this year versus two last year. And alcohol has played a role in 13 deaths in 2007, up 225 per cent from four last year. "In reviewing reports of ATV fatal incidents, in a majority of cases the driver was going too fast, lost control and either hit something or the driver was thrown off the vehicle and it landed on him," Chief Superintendent Bill Grodzinski, Commander of the OPP Highway Safety Division said. "ATVs can be very dangerous if not driven responsibly. Drinking and driving or not wearing a helmet increases an operator's chance of having a serious crash considerably." In one incident, an ATV driver was going too fast on a private road and lost control on a curve. The driver was ejected from the vehicle and was hit by a pick-up truck. In another incident, an inexperienced driver attempted to jump a ditch, hit the edge of the ditch and launched the vehicle 29 metres before it landed on the driver. The driver had been drinking. "The increase in this type of fatality is totally preventable," Grodzinski said. "The OPP will continue to maintain a zero tolerance approach to charging ATV operators who are caught drinking and driving or not wearing approved helmets." According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, heart disease and stroke are the leading causes of death in Canada. For many Canadians, lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease means managing cholesterol levels and adopting a healthy lifestyle and strict diet. The challenge for most is that cholesterol-lowering diets often cut out tasty favourites for unappealing meal substitutions – making the new diet hard to maintain. A new study sponsored by the California Strawberry Commission looks at how a heart-healthy diet can taste great and still be effective. Conducted at the University of Toronto, 28 subjects were instructed to eat either three, one-cup servings of strawberries or two ounces of oat bran bread over a period of 18 weeks. The researchers found that the subjects rated the palatability of strawberries as an 8.8 out of 10 compared to oat bran at 6.2 out of 10, and both lowered LDL-cholesterol levels by 13 per cent. A d d i n g strawberries to the cholesterol-lowering diet improves its overall palatability or taste, and a better tasting diet means that it is easier for Canadians to maintain the diet over a longer period of time. Jam-packed with cholesterol-lowering nutrients, a serving of eight medium sized strawberries contains: • 160 per cent of the Daily Value for vitamin C, which is more than that contained in one orange; • 19 per cent of the Daily Value for folate; • 16 per cent of the Daily Value for dietary fibre; • 8 per cent of the Daily Value for potassium; • Only 50 calories; • No sodium. More information about the health benefits of strawberries is available o n l i n e a t www.calstrawberry.com. CORRECTION ON VISIT DATE Anthony Pucci, Hons. B. Comm.
