THE SCREEN: SOUNDS OF LIGHT
Cette deuxième édition de L’Écran, programme dédié au film et
à la vidéo, s’intéresse plus particulièrement aux relations entre
film et musique à travers des œuvres d’artistes et de réalisateurs
internationaux de différentes générations. Ces œuvres examinent
les liens que ces artistes et réalisateurs entretiennent, de
manière tout à fait distinctes, entre image en mouvement et
compositions musicales et mettent en évidence les stratégies
sonores développées pour soutenir la narration, qu’il s’agisse d’une
bande son composée spécialement en collaboration avec l’artiste
ou bien d’un collage de musiques existantes. Le film légendaire du
réalisateur américain Kenneth Anger, Inauguration of the Pleasure
Dome ouvre ce programme.
This second edition of The Screen, a programme dedicated to film
and video, focuses on the relationships between film and music
through a series of solo presentations of works by international
artists of different generations. This programme explores the
links between music and moving image through different
sound strategies used to support film narratives, whether it is a
soundtrack created specially for the work in collaborations with
the artist or an existing music. The legendary film Inauguration of
the Pleasure Dome by American artist Kenneth Anger opens this
new programme.

Figure légendaire du cinéma expérimental américain, Kenneth Anger
est considéré comme un pionnier sur le plan du montage et de la
relation entre image et musique. Depuis la fin des années 1940, son
œuvre reflète un intérêt pour un certain type de cinéma qui faisant
abstraction de tout dialogue, défend la notion de cinéma visuel et
de cinéma muet à travers des films qu’il qualifie lui-même de filmpoèmes, la musique les accompagnant, faisant souvent l’objet de
collaborations avec des compositeurs ou de reprises de compositions
existantes.
A legendary figure of American experimental cinema, Kenneth
Anger is considered as a pioneer regarding the editing film process
and the relationship between image and music. Since the end of
the 40s, his work reflects an interest for a certain type of cinema,
which making abstraction of dialogues, celebrates the concept of
‘silent cinema’, therefore, Anger creates purely visual films that
he qualifies himself of ‘film-poems’. The soundtrack accompanying
them is often the result of collaboration with composers or
sometimes uses existing music.
Les films de Kenneth Anger privilégient une expérience immersive
pour le spectateur. A travers un rapport profond au mysticisme et
aux sciences occultes, ils développent une mythologie qui s’associe
au langage cinématographique novateur propre au cinéaste. Kenneth
Anger est également un des premiers réalisateurs, aux côtés de Jean
Genet, à promouvoir la liberté d’un cinéma gay. Soutenu dans son
travail par Jean Cocteau, il recevra d’ailleurs le prix du film poétique
au festival de Biarritz en 1949 pour son film emblématique Fireworks
(1947).
Anger’s films intend to create an immersive experience for the
spectator. Through a deep relation to mysticism and occultism,
the artist creates a specific mythology that he associates to his
innovative filmic language. Anger is also, alongside Jean Genet,
one of the first filmmakers to have promoted the freedom of a
Gay cinema. Strongly supported in his work by Jean Cocteau, he
received the prize of the poetic film at the Biarritz festival in 1949
for his film Fireworks (1947).

Film culte, Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome se déroule comme
une fresque d’associations et de superposition d’images qui célèbrent
la philosophie Thelema du fameux occultiste britannique Aleister
Crowley. Le film reflète un état de rêve et de transe, provoqué à la
fois par la lumière, le rythme et la bande son dans le but de donner
au spectateur une expérience de rituel magique. Le titre du film fait
référence au poème Kubla Khan de Samuel Taylor Coleridge (17721834) et met en scène plusieurs amis et proches de Kenneth Anger
comme l’écrivain Anaïs Nin ou l’artiste Marjorie Cameron.
Widely celebrated as a film cult, Inauguration of the Pleasure
Dome, unfold as a succession of juxtaposed and superimposed
images that celebrate the Thelama philosophy of the infamous
British occultist Aleister Crowley. The film oscillates between a
state of dream and a state of trance rendered through the effect
of light, rhythm and the accompanying music in order to provide
the spectator with a ritual magical experience. The title refers to
the poem Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834)
and Anger asked some of his friends to act in the film such as the
writer Anaïs Nin and the artist Marjorie Cameron.
Le film comporte plusieurs versions dont une présentation en trois
écrans. Celle présentée ici a pour bande sonore l’album Eldorado de
Electronic Light Orchestra. Défenseur d’un cinéma qui affirme une
grande liberté, précurseur du clip-vidéo dans la relation qu’il instaure
entre image en mouvement et musique, Anger a eu une influence
immense sur plusieurs générations de réalisateurs et d’artistes. La
présentation de Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome dans l’espace
muséal accentue son caractère avant-gardiste pour l’époque, en
parfait accord avec les codes des installations filmiques actuelles.
This film counts different versions, including a three-screen
projection. The sound track of the version presented here is the
album Eldorado by Electronic Light Orchestra. As an advocate of
a cinema asserting great freedom, and a precursor of the video
clip in the relation he establishes between moving image and
music, Anger has had a huge influence on several generations of
filmmakers and artists. The presentation of Inauguration of the
Pleasure Dome in the museum space underlines its avant-garde
nature for the period, perfectly matching the codes of today film
installations.

Kenneth Anger was born in 1927 in Santa Monica. He lives and
works in Los Angeles. His films have been shown at the 2006
Whitney Biennial; PS1 Contemporary Art Center, New York, in 2009;
and at the 2009 Athens Biennial. His films are in many private and
museum collections, and are regularly shown in experimental film
festivals around the world. Among other awards, he received “The
Golden Gate Persistence of Vision Award” in 2001. He is also the
author of Hollywood Babylon, 1975, a book in which he reveals the
hidden rather dark sides of the life of Hollywood stars.
Kenneth Anger est né en 1927 à Santa Monica. Il vit et travaille
à Los Angeles. Ses films ont été notamment présentés à la
Whitney Biennial, 2006 ; P.S.1 Contemporary Art Centre, New
York en 2009 et à la Biennale d’Athènes, 2009. Ses films sont
dans de nombreuses collections particulières et de musées et sont
régulièrement montrés dans des festivals de films expérimentaux.
Il reçoit entre autres ‘The Golden Gate Persistence Of Vision
Award’ en 2001. Il est également l’auteur de Hollywood Babylon,
1975, ouvrage dans lequel il révèle la face cachée et plutôt sombre
de la vie des stars d’Hollywood.
