Military and civilian personnel saw the latest in safe ladders at the Safety Expo
last week.
Jeff Gaye
MCpl Dennis Zwicker of AETE gets product information from a Loc-Tite rep at
last week’s Safety Expo.
The word of the week is
“participate.”
The Cold Lake Curling
Club had its annual
men’s bonspiel this past
weekend. Fifty curlers had
a great time competing and
socializing, but not too long
ago there might have been
twice as many. Meanwhile,
the
women’s
national
championship (the Scotties)
was on TSN all week, and
drew great audiences.
The sport of curling
is in a funny situation. It’s
growing as a spectator
sport while its grass roots
as
a
socially-oriented
participation activity are
starting to wither.
Of course, curling is
not alone in this. Even golf,
which was booming just five
years ago, is showing signs
that its participation levels
may have peaked, even as
its TV ratings continue to
climb.
Sports aside, we are
in a new golden age of TV.
Not only do the programs
offer smarter writing and
slicker production than
ever before, online delivery
makes watching amazingly
convenient. It’s hard to beat
a good binge-watch of a
gripping series. Solitary and
online computer games are
better than ever too.
But if you want to get
away from the screen or just
enjoy a night out, there’s
plenty to do. It doesn’t have
to be sports, although there
are sports that welcome
beginners and non-elite
players – golf, bowling and
curling come to mind.
If there’s anything
you’ve always wanted to try,
go for it.
Dance, photography,
music lessons, the base
band, archery, hunting or
fishing, dog sports, paddle
sports, painting, swimming,
martial arts, skiing, camping,
hiking, biking, cooking,
winemaking,
languages,
knitting, wood work, auto
mechanics, crafting and
scrapbooking, plus the
traditional individual and
team sports, are among the
things you can do for fun.
There are also volunteer
opportunities with dozens
of local organizations.
There’s nothing wrong
with enjoying time at home.
But if you want to get
out, there are recreation
organizations that would
love to hear from you.

Change: Seeking New Life Within
Padre Elisabeth
Duggan
Winter seems to have
a hold on us that does
not want to release its
grasp. Dreams of leaves
blowing in the wind
and warm temperatures
filling our days seem
distant. Yet we do not
have to be held down
by the gloominess or
the strong discontent of
winter. Rather we can
awaken the springtime of
our souls and reinvigorate
our lives.
Yes, spring may still
be far off and the time
for spring cleaning may
not be on our radar, but
it is a good time to look
within ourselves. What
within our own lives do
we seek to change? We
all have areas in our lives
that we want to improve.
The key is that we must
train ourselves to reach
this
new
potential.
Runners preparing for
a marathon may have
the skill and capability
to compete, but to finish
the race successfully they
need to train. The same
is true for our own lives.
We need to work slowly
towards the change we
seek within.
Any decision to make
