FURUSIYYA FEI NATIONS CUP™ 2016 SEASON
Originally launched in 1909, the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping is the oldest and most prestigious
team Jumping competition in the world.
In 2013 the historic series was given a new, more global format which divided the world into six regions;
Europe (Division 1 and 2), North & Central America, South America, Middle East, Asia/Australia and
Africa. From these regions teams are able to qualify for the world final.
Reflecting a huge growth in popularity for the sport around the world, the new structure of the Furusiyya
FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping embraces more countries than ever before, who will compete head to head
in a competition which pits the traditional powerhouses of the sport against teams from developing
nations.
After resounding success in its inaugural 2013 series the new format has gone from strength to strength
over the last few years bringing us to the 2016 season.

Presentation of Furusiyya
"Furusiyya" (Arabic: ‫ )هيسورف‬this single Arabic word conveys so much, embracing the idea of
horsemanship, chivalry, and equestrian knowledge in general. The term is a derivation of faris, or
horseman and faras, a horse.
For centuries, the ancient term Furusiyya (Arabic: ‫ )هيسورف‬has embraced the idea of horsemanship and
equestrian knowledge, and now this same sense of purity, nobility and chivalry has been brought to the
FEI Nations Cup™ – the Show Jumping’s leading team competition. The term is a derivation of faris, or
horseman, and faras, a horse.
Reflecting a huge growth in popularity for the sport around the world, the new structure of the Furusiyya
FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping embraces more countries than ever before, who will compete head to head
in a competition which pits the traditional powerhouses of the sport against teams from developing
nations.
Furusiyya is immensely proud to be the title sponsor of the FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping until 2017, and
to be the catalyst for the international expansion of this great equestrian competition. During the
inaugural 2013 season, no less than 37 nations competed for 18 places at the Final, which was staged
to great success in Barcelona (ESP) at the end of September. The first Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™
Jumping Final featured teams representing countries from around the world and was a true reflection of
the popularity of the Jumping sport on the global stage.
But 2013 was only the start. The Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping has been created to make the
sport more accessible to all nations, and Furusiyya believes that the competition will lead to more
countries than ever before wanting to compete against the best in years to come. This will see an increase
in the number of Nations Cup shows being staged around the world and ultimately, higher standards of
competition across all levels.

The rules
Under the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping 2016 rules, the world is divided into six regions for the
purpose of qualifying teams for the Final:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Europe (Divisions 1 and 2)
North & Central America
South America
Middle East
Asia/Australasia
Africa
The number of qualifiers for the 2016 season was limited to 19, with eight in Europe Division 1 and seven
in Europe Division 2. The North and Central America & Caribbean Region has three qualifiers and a single
event in the Middle East. The season opened at Ocala (USA), with the CSIO4* running from 16-21
February.
The Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping Final will once again be held at the Real Club de Polo of
Barcelona (ESP), venue for the equestrian events at the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992.
The nations
Qualifying events for all regions are run under the traditional two-round Nations Cup formula. To be
eligible to participate in qualifying events for the Final, all nations must have a minimum of four riders
in the Longines Rankings at the end of October the previous year.
For regions without qualifying events, the Longines Rankings have been used to determine the teams
that qualified for the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping Final.
The first leg European Division One Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping competition, which was due to
take place at Lummen (BEL) on Friday afternoon (29 April), was cancelled due to adverse weather
conditions. As a result of the cancellation of Lummen, the following rule is applied:
8.5 Cancellation of a 2016 Qualifying Competition
In the case of a qualifying Competition being cancelled in any Region or Division where teams are
allocated Events counting for points the following procedure applies:
Teams whose result would have counted for points at the cancelled Competition are distributed points
for the cancelled Competition, based on the total number of points obtained at their other allocated
Events divided by the number of Events at which they have participated for points.
This calculation is carried out at the end of the season.
The Final
The Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping Final 2016 has been allocated to Barcelona (ESP) and will take
place from 22-25 September. The FEI Nations Cup™ Final will consist of three competitions, with all
qualified teams starting in the first of these. This one-round competition, not against the clock, will
decide the top eight teams that go through to the third and final competition. Teams placed ninth and
lower will compete in the Challenge Cup (competition 2).

FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping Final, start on zero penalties. Four riders in each team compete in the first
round, with a jump-off against the clock in the event of teams tied for first place after this round.
Only three riders per team go through to the jump-off, with no drop score, guaranteeing a thrilling finish
to the series. The complete rules of the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping 2016 are available on the
