To demonstrate comprehension of the meaning of an authentic oral message. 2. To demonstrate comprehension of the meaning of an authentic text of general interest. 3. To express a message orally. 1.1 Recognition of the overall meaning and main points of an oral message lasting approximately five minutes with one playback or repetition.. 1.2 Recognition of the connections between the components of the message. 2.1 Recognition of the overall meaning and key ideas of a text of approximately 750 words containing abstract ideas. 2.2 Recognition of the connections between the components of the text. 3.1 Intelligible, structured and coherent general interest communication or interaction lasting at least three minutes. 3.2 Formulation of relevant questions in interactive communication; questions are generally grammatically correct. 3.3 Generally correct use of verbs in reference to the past. 3.4 Adequate pronunciation, intonation and rate of delivery. 4 . Activités d’apprentissage Discipline : Anglais, langue seconde Pondération : 2-1-3 Nombre d’unités : 2 Code de cours : 604-101-03 Titre du cours : Langue anglaise et communication Course Overview Introduction This course is for you if: -you have had or have regular contact with English -you have some confidence and ability in speaking and understanding English -you have less confidence and ability in writing English well -you make a lot of grammatical mistakes -you have adequate vocabulary but you need more variety This course will help to develop: -your vocabulary to enrich and clarify your communication -your understanding and correct use of grammar -your writing and speaking skills -your understanding through listening and reading activities To develop your abilities and build self-confidence in English situations, you need to: -come to all classes -participate fully in English -do your homework -increase your contact with the English language (e.g., homework, music, videos, movies, newspapers, internet) General Objectives In this course, there is an overview of grammar to solidify and add to your present knowledge of English, with an emphasis on acquiring more expressions and vocabulary to make you a more fluent speaker and writer. You will also work on organizing your writing into coherent paragraphs that make your ideas easier to follow. This awareness of how to organize and present information will also be demonstrated in oral presentations. By increasing your comprehension of a variety of written material and oral communications, you will become a more effective reader and listener. Finally, an important aspect of language learning is an ability to demonstrate an attitude of openness and respect. Specific Objectives 1. Demonstrate understanding of new vocabulary and expressions a. Incorporation/effective use of this vocabulary and expressions to communicate clearly 2. Pick up main and specific ideas from written and oral* communication a. The ability to clearly summarize, paraphrase and/or retell general and abstract ideas that you read or hear about (*after 2 listenings) 3. Structure an idea in written expression a. Outline ideas for use in written contexts b. Write and revise a structured and coherent 350-word text that demonstrates the awareness of the key elements of the paragraph (topic sentences, supporting ideas and info, subtopics, etc.) i. Suitable use of grammar and spelling with particular attention to modals and verb tenses such as simple present and present continuous, simple past and past continuous, present perfect, future. c. Use transition words and conjunctions d. Develop a greater variety of sentence structures e. Adapt to the context and purpose of communication f. Use new ideas and expressions g. Use general correct verb tenses In 101A, you need to demonstrate satisfactory comprehension and use of the following grammar: a. Verb tenses i. choosing the following verb tenses based on “indicators of time” (last night, tomorrow, when I was in high school, two years ago…etc.) simple present vs present progressive (I talk vs. I am talking) simple past (I talked) present perfect (I have talked) past progressive (I was talking) future (I will talk / I`m going to talk) ii. in question formation and negative forms b. c. d. e. f. g. h. i. j. k. l. m. modals (can, could, should, might, must, will, would, have to) comparatives & superlatives ( than, as…as..) capitalization (languages, pronoun “I”, titles) pronouns (subject, object & possessive) possessive & demonstrative adjectives possessive form using apostrophe s prepositions (in, on, at, to) a vs. an as generic articles there is/are; there was/were punctuation count and non-count nouns/much, many plurals Methodology The methodology for this course requires active participation from the student. L’étudiant qui est absent à un cours a la responsabilité de remettre les travaux prévus et de s’informer de la matière donnée ou des exercices effectués afin d’être à jour lors du cours suivant. L’étudiant doit avoir reçu 25% des points de la note totale avant la 8e semaine de cours. Les professeurs insistent sur la qualité de la présentation. L’étudiant doit se conformer aux critères pré-établis. Le retard dans la remise d’exercices ou d’un travail entraîne une pénalité de 20% au total. Aucun exercice ou travail n’est accepté par le professeur après la présentation du corrigé ou la remise des copies corrigées au groupe. L’étudiant doit remettre l’original de son travail et en conserver une copie. En cas d’absence à une évaluation sommative, l’étudiant se voit attribuer la note zéro (0). Toutefois, l’étudiant qui a dû s’absenter pour une raison sérieuse à un test, à un examen ou à un travail fait en classe peut reprendre cette évaluation s’il justifie son absence de façon acceptable pour le professeur. Ce recours doit être exercé avant la remise des copies corrigées. Dans ce cas, l’étudiant doit pouvoir fournir un document écrit qui atteste le motif de son absence : certificat médical, rapport d’accident, certificat de décès, ordonnance de la cour, participation à des activités de l’École sport-études, etc. Une révision de notes en fin de session ne peut porter que sur la note d'un examen final ou d'un travail qui en tient lieu. L’anglais est la seule langue utilisée en classe. En cas de plagiat, la note zéro (0) pour le travail, l'examen ou le test est attribuée lorsqu'un étudiant se rend coupable de plagiat pour la première fois; la note zéro (0) pour le cours au complet est attribuée lorsqu'un étudiant se rend coupable de plagiat pour une deuxième fois pendant ses études collégiales; l'étudiant est suspendu ou renvoyé du Collège lorsqu'il se rend coupable de plagiat pour une troisième fois pendant ses études collégiales. Lors d'un constat de plagiat, le professeur en avise sans délai l'étudiant concerné et rédige un mémo au coordonnateur de l’enseignement qui voit à le déposer à son dossier. Tout étudiant qui est refusé en classe pour n’importe quelle raison doit suivre les procédures du département pour être réadmis en classe. Il incombe à l’étudiant de prendre rendez-vous immédiatement avec son professeur afin de discuter de la situation menant au refus en classe. Si aucune entente ne peut être convenue, l’étudiant doit se présenter le plus tôt possible à la coordination du département. Si cette démarche auprès du département demeure insatisfaisante, l’étudiant a recours à la coordination de l’enseignement préuniversitaire.
