WHO WILL CHALLENGE NYCK DE VRIES IN 2011?
The CIK-FIA Karting World Championship is getting ready for a new take-off. In 2011 it will adopt new
technical regulations and a new format.
Introduced in 2009, the Super KF category will only have lived for two years, a victim of too liberal engine
regulations. Switching back to a more accessible type of engines showed the way in Spain in September
2010 at the last World Championship: for lack of a sufficient Super KF field the CIK-FIA had to find an
alternative solution and opted for the well-tried definition of KF2 engines. This choice proved so judicious
that the event enjoyed an entry list with no fewer than 125 Drivers.
Further to negotiations with a panel of major Manufacturers, upon their proposal it has been decided to
reserve the 2011 World Championship for a new version of KF1, which will have free chassis & tyres and
with KF2-type engines.
“ This technical definition has several important advantages ”, explained Shaikh Abdulla bin Isa Al Khalifa,
President of the CIK-FIA. “The experience of the 2010 World Championship speaks for itself: uncertain in
Super KF, the field considerably got thicker when it was announced that the event would be held for KF2s.
The engines of the latter karts are more accessible, less costly and much more widespread as they are
also used in the ASNs’ national Championships. The solution retained with this redefinition of KF1 suits
the largest number of parties involved: chassis and tyre Manufacturers, who still have a good room for
manœuvre to develop their products, engine Tuners, who are still in with a say in the matter – which was
not really the case any longer with the too specific SKF engines –, and private Drivers, who still stand a
good chance of winning even against works Drivers.”
With this new kick-off, the CIK-FIA will reintroduce a World Championship held over several events and
has resolved to regroup the former European Championship and World Cup in Japan under the same World
Championship label. In 47 years of history, the Karting World Championship was organised over a series of
events only 6 times. It was from 1966 to 1969, as well as in 2001 and 2002. While the formula of a World
Championship held in a single event has indeed its own virtues, the series format will enhance to a larger
extent the Driver who ends up winning it. The programme of the year 2011 comprises a total of 5 events,
with a very prestigious opening at Suzuka, in Japan (22 May), followed by stages in Germany (Wackersdorf, 12 June), Spain (Zuera, 24 July), Belgium (Genk, 4 September) and Italy (Sarno, 18 September).

nued. “Each event will be composed of 4 races with points allocated, and the Driver who eventually wins it
is bound to have had a strong season. The Championship will also be reserved for a maximum of 34 Drivers. Only the Japanese event will benefit from ‘‘ wild cards ’’, aimed at encouraging Asian participation. ”
Revealed by the World Council on 3rd November, the new technical & sporting format of the World Championship has immediately aroused the interest of the most ambitious Manufacturers, Teams and Drivers.
The reigning World Champion, Nyck de Vries, will be present. “ I am very much interested by the dimension of this Championship ”, comments the Dutch Driver, “ and it will even further enhance the Drivers’
sporting achievements. I fully support it. Although I won in 2010, the idea of landing another edition of
the most official and renowned Karting Championship is a huge motivation for me, especially in this new
context! In 2011 I shall remain completely focussed on Karting and have every intention of enriching my
experience before switching to automobiles. ”
With the participation of the major Manufacturers, the interest shown by semi-official or private Teams
and the fact that the most competitive KF2, KF3 and U18 Drivers in 2010 confess that they have a fad
for this Championship, there should definitely not be a lack of applicants for the 34 available places ! The
opening date of entries is scheduled for 20 January 2011.

QUI DÉFIERA NYCK DE VRIES EN 2011 ?
Le Championnat du Monde de Karting de la CIK-FIA se prépare pour un nouvel envol. En 2011, il adoptera
une nouvelle réglementation technique et un nouveau format.
La catégorie Super KF, instaurée en 2009, n’aura vécu que deux ans, victime du règlement trop libéral de
ses moteurs. Le retour à une motorisation plus accessible a ouvert la voie lors du dernier Championnat du
Monde couru en septembre 2010 en Espagne : faute d’un plateau suffisant en Super KF, la CIK-FIA avait
dû trouver une solution de remplacement et avait opté pour la définition éprouvée des moteurs de KF2. Ce
choix s’était avéré judicieux, au point de valoir à l’épreuve une liste des engagés forte de 125 Pilotes.
Après négociation avec un panel de grands Constructeurs, sur proposition de leur part il a été décidé de
réserver le Championnat du Monde 2011 à une nouvelle mouture de la KF1, où les châssis et pneus seront
libres et où les moteurs seront de type KF2.
« Cette définition technique présente plusieurs grands avantages », explique le Cheikh Abdulla bin Isa Al
Khalifa, le Président de la CIK-FIA. « L’expérience du Championnat du Monde 2010 est parlante : d’incertain en Super KF, le plateau s’est considérablement étoffé à l’annonce du choix de courir en KF2. Ces
moteurs sont plus accessibles, moins coûteux et beaucoup plus répandus puisqu’ils sont aussi utilisés
dans les Championnats nationaux des ASN. La solution retenue avec cette redéfinition de la KF1convient
au plus grand nombre : aux Constructeurs de châssis et aux Manufacturiers de pneumatiques, qui gardent
une bonne marge de manœuvre pour développer leurs produits, aux Préparateurs de moteurs, qui gardent voix au chapitre – ce qui n’était plus vraiment le cas avec les trop spécifiques moteurs de SKF –, et
aux Pilotes privés, lesquels gardent leurs chances même face aux Pilotes d’usine. »
Avec ce nouvel envol, la CIK-FIA remettra en place un Championnat du Monde sur plusieurs épreuves
et a pris le parti de regrouper les anciens Championnat d’Europe et Coupe du Monde au Japon sous le
seul label de Championnat du Monde. En 47 ans d’histoire, le « Mondial » de Karting ne s’est disputé qu’à
6 reprises sur une série d’épreuves. C’était de 1966 à 1969, ainsi qu’en 2001 et 2002. La formule du
Championnat du Monde concentré sur un seul événement a certes ses mérites, mais le format de série
valorisera davantage le Pilote qui en sortira vainqueur. Au total, 5 épreuves sont inscrites au programme
de l’année 2011, avec une ouverture pleine de prestige à Suzuka, au Japon (22 mai), suivie d’étapes en
Allemagne (Wackersdorf, 12 juin), Espagne (Zuera, 24 juillet), Belgique (Genk, 4 septembre) et Italie
(Sarno, 18 septembre).

le Cheikh Abdulla. « Chaque épreuve se composera de 4 courses attribuant des points, et celui qui en
sortira gagnant aura forcément été l’auteur d’un parcours solide. Le Championnat sera aussi réservé à un
maximum de 34 Pilotes. Seules l’épreuve japonaise bénéficiera de ‘‘wild cards’’, de façon à encourager la
participation asiatique. »
Révélé par le Conseil Mondial du 3 novembre, le nouveau format technico-sportif du Championnat du
Monde de la IK-FIA a d’emblée suscité l’intérêt des plus ambitieux Constructeurs, Équipes et Pilotes. Le
Champion du Monde en titre, Nyck de Vries, y sera. «La dimension du Championnat m’intéresse beaucoup», commente le Pilote néerlandais, «et il mettra encore plus en valeur les prestations sportives des
Pilotes. J’y adhère entièrement. J’ai gagné en 2010, mais remporter une autre édition du plus officiel et du
plus renommé Championnat du Karting me motive énormément, surtout dans ce nouveau contexte ! En
2011, je resterai totalement concentré sur le Karting, et je compte bien y enrichir mon expérience avant
de songer à un passage à l’automobile. »
Avec la participation des plus grands Constructeurs, l’intérêt manifesté par les Équipes semi-officielles
ou privées et l’engouement avoué des jeunes Pilotes les plus en verve en 2010 en KF2, KF3 et M18 pour
ce nouveau Championnat du Monde, les 34 places à prendre devraient facilement trouver acquéreurs !
L’ouverture des inscriptions est prévue dès le 20 janvier 2011.
