À BOUT DE SOUFFLE ? CERTAINEMENT PAS !

Revoir des films aujourd'hui nous fait mesurer combien le Cinéma s'est transformé. Essayons d'imaginer comment une œuvre
comme À bout de souffle dont nous célébrons le 50e anniversaire, serait accueillie aujourd'hui? Aucune nostalgie cependant.
L'an passé, nous évoquions l'idée d'un festival comme lieu de transmission. N'est-ce pas là, profondément notre motivation?
Le critique, Serge Daney, inventa un joli terme à propos du rôle de critique : Un passeur. Voilà peut être une balise de plus nous
permettant de tracer les contours de ce qu'un festival est et se doit d'être ?
Comment accompagner, commenter les transformations à venir ? Comment ne pas laisser le discours technologique faire
écran aux expériences artistiques ? Comment offrir des espaces, des lieux de diffusion, d'exposition mais aussi de dialogues
entre les artistes et le public ? Comment permettre les rencontres entre les œuvres et leurs destinataires ?
Esquissons trois propositions de réponse : Salle de cinéma / Indépendance / Politique publique.
Voilà tout le sens que prendra cette édition qui ouvre une nouvelle décennie pour nous !
Pour ce parcours nous serons accompagnés par les invités présents et les sélections officielles en compétition (merci et bonne
chance aux jurys !).
À commencer par la présence d'un cinéaste mondialement reconnu: Miloš Forman, dont le dialogue avec son ami Jean-Claude
Carrière s'annonce des plus captivants.
Suivront les rencontres avec Anne-Dominique Toussaint, Lucile Chaufour, Barry Purves, Philippe Blasband, Les Studios AB de
Lettonie et André Dussollier tout au long du festival.
Nous inaugurerons une nouvelle section : Vents d'Est 02, fruit de nos passionnantes rencontres avec le festival Era New
Horizon de Wroclaw (Pologne) et la Femis (France).

BREATHLESS? CERTAINLY NOT!

To see old films again show us how cinema has changed. Can we imagine how a piece like Breathless, whose 50th anniversary
is celebrated, would be received today? However, No nostalgia is necessary.
Last year, we refer to the festival as a place of transmission. Is this not our motivation? The critic Serge Daney found a nice term
to describe the critic’s role: ‘a ferryman’. This could be another suggestion to help us draw what a festival is and should be.
How can we accompany and comment the changes to come? How can we avoid letting the technological discourse obfuscate
artistic experiences? How can we offer places where art works can be shown and exhibited and discussions between artists
and the public promoted? How can art works meet their recipients?
We can outline three proposals to answer these questions: Cinema theatres / Independence / Public policy.
This is the full meaning of this new festival’s edition, which opens a new decade!
During this journey, we will be accompanied by our guests and the film festival official selection (thanks to the Juries and good luck!).
The festival will start welcoming the worldwide famous filmmaker, Miloš Forman, whose discussion with his friend JeanClaude Carrière is very promising.
Other meetings will take place with Anne-Dominique Toussaint, Lucile Chaufour, Barry Purves, Philippe Blasband, AB Studios
from Latvia and André Dussollier all along the festival.
We open as well a new section: Vents d'Est 02, which is the result of our exciting meetings with the Wroclaw Era New Horizon
Festival (Poland) and the Femis school (France).

Mettre un cinéma de qualité à la portée de tous les publics…. C’est l’objectif du Conseil général de l’Essonne ; c’est aussi l’engagement de l’association Cinessonne.
Fait unique en France, et pour la 11e fois en Essonne, 12 salles de cinéma d’Art et d’Essai portent ensemble une manifestation
construite comme le point d’orgue de leur travail au quotidien : soutenir les films fragiles, faire intervenir des réalisateurs, des
comédiens, proposer des accompagnements, aiguiser les goûts et la curiosité des spectateurs, leur proposer toujours plus et
toujours mieux.
Alors que la concurrence dans ce secteur est de mise partout, les responsables de nos équipements de proximité mutualisent
leurs énergies et leurs exigences artistiques afin de construire ensemble un événement solidaire… et durable !
La venue dans les salles de notre département d’invités aussi prestigieux que Miloš Forman et la récente attribution du label
européen « Plan Média Europe » révèlent d’ailleurs la reconnaissance croissante dont jouit le festival.
C’est pourquoi nous pouvons être fiers de ce que représente ce « 11e Festival du Cinéma Européen en Essonne » sur notre territoire et bien au-delà.
Aussi, que vous soyez cinéphiles ou pas, petits ou grands, faîtes confiance au travail formidable que mènent toute l’année nos
professionnels afin de nous faire accéder à un cinéma de qualité.

To bring quality cinema within every public’s reach is the objective of the Conseil général de l’Essonne as well as the commitment of the Cinessonne association.
This is a unique event in France, which happens for the 11th time in Essonne. 12 independent cinema theaters join together to
support an event that can be seen as the crowning moment of their daily work: To support films in difficulty, to welcome filmmakers and actors to discuss their work, to offer accompaniments, to arouse the public’s taste and curiosity, to always propose more cinema and better films.
Although competition is everywhere in this sector, people in charge of community resources join their energy and artistic standards to create an event characterised by solidarity… and sustainability!
The presence of guests as prestigious as Miloš Forman and the European label « European Media Program » recently received show the growing recognition of the festival.
Indeed, we can be proud of what represents the ‘11th European Film Festival in Essonne’ in France and beyond.
Whether you are a cinephile or not, a child or a grown-up, you can trust the amazing work done by our professional team all
year round to give us access to quality cinema.

L'EUROPE AIME LES FESTIVALS EUROPÉENS

Lieux privilégiés de rencontres, d’échanges et de découvertes, les festivals rendent vivante et accessible au plus grand nombre la formidable diversité de talents, d’histoires et d’émotions que constituent les cinématographies européennes.
Le programme MEDIA de l’Union européenne vise à promouvoir le patrimoine cinématographique européen, à encourager les
films à traverser les frontières et à renforcer la compétitivité du secteur audiovisuel. Le programme MEDIA a reconnu l’importance culturelle, éducative, sociale et économique des festivals en co-finançant 85 d'entre-eux dans toute l’Europe en 2008.
Ces manifestations se démarquent par une programmation européenne riche et diverse, par les opportunités de rencontres
qu'elles offrent au public et aux cinéastes, par leurs actions de soutien aux jeunes auteurs, par leurs initiatives pédagogiques
ou encore par l'importance donnée au dialogue inter-culturel.
En 2008, l'ensemble de ces festivals soutenus par le programme MEDIA a programmé plus de 18.700 œuvres européennes
pour le grand plaisir de près de 2,9 millions cinéphiles.
MEDIA a le plaisir de soutenir la 11e édition du Festival du Cinéma Européen en Essonne et souhaite aux festivaliers de grands
moments de plaisir.

A privileged place for meetings, exchanges and discovery, festivals provide a vibrant and accessible environment for the widest
variety of talent, stories and emotions that constitute Europe’s cinematography.
The MEDIA Programme of the European Union aims to promote European audiovisual heritage, to encourage the transnational circulation of films and to foster audiovisual industry competitiveness. The MEDIA Programme acknowledged the cultural,
educational, social and economic role of festivals by co-financing 85 of them across Europe in 2008.
These festivals stand out with their rich and diverse European programming, networking and meeting opportunities for professionals and the public alike, their activities in support of young professionals, their educational initiatives and the importance they give to strengthening inter-cultural dialogue. In 2008, the festivals supported by the MEDIA Programme have screened more than 18 700 European works to more than 2.9 million cinema-lovers.
MEDIA is pleased to support the 11th edition edition of the European Film Festival in Essonne (France) and we extend our best
wishes to all of the festival goers for an enjoyable and stimulating event.

TOUFAN MANOUTCHERI comédienne
Née en 1972 à Téhéran (Iran). Toufan Manoutcheri est élève
aux cours du Théâtre de l’Épée de Bois à la Cartoucherie de
Vincennes. De 1992 à 1999, elle est comédienne et assistante
mise en scène au sein de la troupe du Théâtre du Nouveau
Monde. En 1995, elle rejoint la compagnie Jolie Môme. Toufan
Manoutcheri a joué dans plusieurs courts métrages et dans le
long métrage Pour un instant, la liberté de Arash T. Riahi,
primé au Festival du Cinéma Européen en Essonne 2008.

ANNA NOVION réalisatrice, scénariste
Née en 1979. Anna Novion suit des études de cinéma à la
faculté de Saint-Denis puis à Jussieu. Suédoise par sa mère,
elle réalise en Suède son premier court métrage, Frédérique
est Française, en 2000. Puis ce sera Chanson entre deux en
2001 et enfin On ne prend pas la mer quand on la connaît pas,
en 2004. En 2008 elle réalise son premier long métrage Les
Grandes Personnes.

SERGE BOZON réalisateur, acteur

LÉO SOESANTO journaliste
Diplômé de Sciences Po Paris, Léo Soesanto est un collaborateur régulier des Inrockuptibles, où il écrit principalement des
critiques de films, des portraits et chroniques. Il écrit surtout
sur le cinéma américain contemporain, le cinéma de genre et
la figure de l’adolescent. Il contribue aussi aux rubriques BD,
télévision et à leur site Internet.
A graduate of the Paris Institute of Political Sciences, Léo Soesanto
is a regular contributor of the magazine Les Inrockuptibles where
he mainly writes film critics, portraits and chronicles. He particularly writes on American contemporary cinema, film genres and
the adolescent figure. He also contributes to the cartoon and television sections as well as the magazine’s website.

MIEL VAN HOOGENBEMT réalisateur
Né en 1958 en Belgique. Véritable autodidacte, Miel van
Hoogenbemt se lance quelque temps dans la production de
courts métrages puis passe à la réalisation de documentaires.
C’est dans un de ses documentaires que Miel van
Hoogenbemt trouve le sujet de son premier long métrage de
fiction Miss Montigny. En 2007, il tourne son second long
métrage, Pas Sérieux s’abstenir, pour lequel Maria Popistasu
a reçu le Prix d’interprétation féminine du Festival du Cinéma
Européen en Essonne.

Miloš Forman est né à Caslav (Tchécoslovaquie). Ses parents sont arrêtés par la Gestapo lorsqu’il a neuf ans et meurent par
la suite dans les camps de la mort nazis. Il commence à s’intéresser au théâtre à l’époque où il est en pension dans une école
pour les orphelins de guerre. Miloš Forman s’inscrit ensuite à l’école de cinéma de Prague où il étudie avec Ivan Passer. En
1963, il réalise son premier long métrage, le récit autobiographique d’un adolescent dans une petite ville Tchèque appelée
Black Peter. Ses deux prochains films, Les Amours d’une Blonde (1965) et Au feu les pompiers! (1967) augmentent encore sa
reconnaissance internationale. Au moment où les chars russes entrent dans Prague en août 1968, Miloš Forman est à Paris
pour négocier le tournage de son prochain film américain. Il rentre brièvement à Prague puis part à New York tourner Taking
Off. Présenté officiellement en 1971 au Festival de Cannes comme œuvre américaine, il reçoit le Prix du Jury. En 1973, les producteurs Michael Douglas et Saul Zaentz donnent au réalisateur une copie du livre Vol au-dessus d’un nid de coucou. Le film
qui s’ensuit rafle en 1975 les cinq principaux Oscars. Vol au-dessus d’un nid de coucou est suivi par l’adaptation de la comédie musicale Hair (1979). Miloš Forman sort ensuite James Cagney de sa retraite pour qu’il rejoigne l’équipe du film Ragtime,
adaptation du roman de E.L. Doctorow. Huit ans après Vol au-dessus d’un nid de coucou, Miloš Forman retrouve le producteur
Saul Zaentz et retourne dans son pays natal la Tchécoslovaquie pour tourner Amadeus (1984). Miloš Forman reçoit encore une
fois l’Oscar du meilleur réalisateur pour ce film. Parmi les autres films de Forman, on peut citer Valmont (1989) avec Annette
Bening et Colin Firth, The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996), Man on the Moon (1999) qui retrace la vie du comique Andy Kaufman

Miloš Forman was born in Caslav (Czechoslovakia). At the age of nine, his parents were arrested by the Gestapo and later perished in the Nazi death camps. He became interested in theater while attending a boarding school for children orphaned by the
war. Miloš Forman enrolled in the University of Prague’s Film Institute, where he studied with Ivan Passer. In 1963, he directed his first feature, an autobiographical account of a teenager in a small Czech town called Black Peter. His next two films,
Loves of a Blonde (1965) and Fireman’s Ball (1967) brought the director further international acclaim. When Soviet tanks rumbled into Prague in August 1968, Miloš Forman was in Paris to negotiate the making of his first American film. He returned
briefly to Prague, and then moved to New York to make Taking Off. The film was the official US entry at the 1971 Cannes film
festival, where it was awarded the jury prize. In 1973, producers Michael Douglas and Saul Zaentz gave the director a copy of
the Ken Kesey novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The film swept the top five 1975 Academy Award categories; He followed Cuckoo’s Nest with the film version of the long-running musical Hair (1979) and then lured James Cagney out of retirement to join the ensemble cast of Forman’s film version of E. L. Doctorow’s novel Ragtime. Eight years after Cuckoo’s Nest,
Miloš Forman teamed again with producer Saul Zaentz, and returned to his homeland of Czechoslovakia to make Amadeus
(1984). Once again, Forman was presented with the Oscar as best director for the film. Forman’s other films include Valmont
(1989) starring Annette Bening and Colin Firth, The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996), Man in the Moon (1999) about the life of

Le célèbre spectacle A Walk Worthwhile, écrit par le légendaire duo Ji í Suchý-Ji í Šlitr, mis en scène
en 1965. Miloš Forman et Ján Rohá ont fait du spectacle un téléfilm en 1966. Le spectacle a de nouveau été monté au Théâtre National de Prague en 2007, sur une mise en scène de Miloš Forman en
association avec ses fils… L'aventure a donné lieu à une version pour le grand écran de cet opéra jazz
comique. L'histoire ici racontée est un conte moral sur les efforts d'une jeune femme pour trouver un
homme qui lui fasse un enfant et lui permette du même coup d'hériter d'1M£.
The famous show A Walk Worthwhile, written by the legendary pair Ji í Suchý-Ji í Šlitr was staged in
1965. Miloš Forman and Ján Rohá adapted the show to produce a TV film in 1966. The show was staged again at the Prague National Theater in 2007 and directed by Miloš Forman and his sons. This experience leaded to an adaptation of this comic jazz opera for the big screen. The film is a moral tale and
tells the story of a young woman, who tries to find a man and have a child in order to inherit 1M£.

JEAN-CLAUDE CARRIÈRE
Born in Hérault in 1931. After graduating in Literature and
obtaining a post-graduate diploma in History, Jean-Claude
Carrière devoted himself to drawing and writing. He published his first novel, Lézard in 1957 and met at Jacques Tati’s
home Pierre Étaix, with whom he wrote the scripts of short
and feature films. He worked in collaboration with Buñuel for
nineteen years until this great filmmaker died.
A long-time friend of Milos Forman, Jean-Claude Carrière
wrote the scripts of Taking Off (1971), Valmont (1989) and
Goya’s Ghosts (2007). Among other scripts written by JeanClaude Carrière are Le Tambour de Volker Schlöndorff (1975)
and Le Retour de Martin Guerre by Daniel Vigne (1982), for
which he received the French Cesar for Best Script in 1983.
He also worked on the adaptation of literature pieces such as
Cyrano de Bergerac, Le Roi des Aulnes…

Meilleur Second Rôle dans Un cœur en hiver, de Claude Sautet. Au milieu des années 90, André Dussollier prend part à plusieurs grands succès comme On connaît la chanson pour lequel il obtient le César du Meilleur acteur. Aujourd’hui, il est appelé
par la nouvelle génération de réalisateurs comme Guillaume Canet ou Nicolas Boukhrief. En 2009 André Dussollier reste fidèle

André Dussollier was born in 1946 in Annecy. In 1972, he joined the Comédie française as a resident and began his career in
cinema working with the Nouvelle Vague directors. In 1983, the film La vie est un roman by Alain Resnais begins a fruitful collaboration with this director André Dussollier obtained his first popular success in 1985 with the comedy film Trois hommes
et un couffin directed by Coline Serreau.In 1991, his acting performance is recognized by professionals and he won the French
Academy Award, the Cesar for Best Supporting Actor in Un cœur en hiver by Claude Sautet. In the middle of the 90’s, André
Dussollier starred in several successful films such as On connaît la chanson for which he won the Best Actor Cesar. Today, he
is wanted by new directors such as Guillaume Canet and Nicolas Boukhrief. In 2009, he showed his loyalty to Alain Resnais
starring in the dramatic comedy Les Herbes folles and acting again with Sabine Azéma.

Né en 1955. Après des études de civilisation grecque et de théâtre à l’université de Manchester, Barry Purves commence à
travailler comme régisseur et comme acteur dans de nombreux théâtres d’Angleterre. Dès 1986, il devient animateur freelance et réalise des publicités, des clips et des séquences d’animation pour des sociétés de production prestigieuses comme
Aardman, Redwing, Granada et la BBC. En 1989, il crée sa propre société « Bare Boards » avec laquelle il produira désormais
la plupart de ses films. Barry Purves dirige également des ateliers d’animation dans tous les principaux studios américains
(Dreamworks, P.D.I., Pixar et Will Vintons...). Ses films ont gagné plus de soixante prix internationaux et ont été nominés aux
Oscars et aux BAFTA (The British Academy of Film and Television Arts).

chez eux : Christina, qui travaille comme agent de sécurité dans l’usine du père.
The father, the mother and their three kids live at the outskirts of a city. There is a tall fence surrounding the house. The kids have never been outside that fence. They are being educated, entertained, in
the manner that their parents deem appropriate. The only person allowed to enter the house is
Christina. She works as a security guard at the father’s business.

Yorgos Lanthimos est né à Athènes. Il a étudié la réalisation de films à l’école de cinéma Stavrakos.
Au cours des années 90, il a réalisé une série de vidéos pour des compagnies de danse grecques.
Depuis 1995, il a réalisé de nombreux films publicitaires, des clips vidéos, des courts métrages et des
pièces de théâtre expérimental. Canines est son troisième film.
Yorgos Lanthimos was born in Athens. He studied directing for Film and Television at the Stavrakos
Film School. Through the 90’s he directed a series of videos for Greek dance-theater companies. Since
1995 he has directed numerous Tv commercials, in addition to music videos, short films and experimental theater plays. Dogtooth is his third film.

Born in 1970 in Barcelona. At the age of 17, he went to Paris where he works with the filmmaker

Dostoïevski lui valut une avalanche de prix. Il enseigne le film d'animation en Suède, à Harvard et à
l'École de Cinéma de Lodz, en Pologne.
Born in 1956 in Warsow. Piotr Dumała is an animator and director of animation films. Le Petit
Chaperon noir produced in 1983 was his first international success. In 1985, the adaptation of
Dostoevsky’s novel, A Gentle Creature received a flood of awards. He teaches animation filmmaking in

Joy, une fille de 18 ans, est portée disparue. Une autre jeune fille, Helen, est sur le point de quitter son
foyer d'accueil. Elle est alors sollicitée par la police pour incarner Joy dans une reconstitution qui
retracera ses derniers faits et gestes. Helen se prend au jeu et s'immisce dans la vie de la disparue à
mesure qu'elle côtoie ses proches et les lieux fréquentés jadis par Joy.
Joy, an eighteen-years old girl has gone missing. Another girl, Helen, is about to leave her care home.
She is then asked by the police to play Joy in a reconstruction that will retrace her last moments. She
gets caught into the game and immerses herself into the missing girl’s life as she visits her close ones
and places she used to go.
CHRISTINE MOLLOY et JOE LAWLOR
Depuis 4 ans, Christine Molloy et Joe Lawlor travaillent sur le projet Civic Life, impliquant des groupes
de quartiers dans la production de courts métrages. En 2004, leur film Who Killed Brown Owl gagne
le prix du Meilleur Court au Festival d’Edimbourg. En janvier 2008, leur neuvième et dernier court
métrage Joy gagne le Prix UIP au Festival International du Film de Rotterdam. Helen est l’aboutissement de ce projet et le premier long métrage de Christine Molloy et Joe Lawlor.
Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor have been working on the Civic Life project involving local community
groups in the production of short films for four years. In 2004, their film Who Killed Brown Owl won
the Best Short Film Award at the Edinburgh Festival. In January 2008, their ninth and last short film,
Joy won the UIP Award at the Rotterdam International Film festival. Helen is the culmination of this
project as well as Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor’s first feature film.

Born in Kent in England in 1958, Andrew Kötting studied at Ravensbourne College of Art and Design
ahd the Slade School of Fine Arts in London. In 1996 he directed his first feature, Gallivant. His second
feature film, This Filthy Earth (2001) was an adaptation of Zola’s The Earth.

FÉLIX VAN GROENINGEN
Félix van Groeningen, 31 ans, termine en 2000 ses études de réalisation à la "Filmacademie" de Gand,
où son talent singulier est rapidement remarqué par un de ses professeurs, le producteur Dirk Impens.
Félix a réalisé des courts métrages, écrit et mis en scène plusieurs pièces de théâtre et signé trois
longs métrages, tous caractérisés par un style très personnel et un regard fascinant sur les hommes
dans des milieux divers. Il est considéré comme un des pionniers de la Nouvelle Vague belge.
Felix van Groeningen is 31 and in 2000 completed his directing studies at the Filmacademie of Ghent,
where his one of his teachers, Dirk Impens, quickly noticed his unusual talent. Felix has made shorts,
written and staged several plays and directed three features, all characterized by a highly personal
style and a fascinating vision of men in different environments. He is considered a pioneer of the
Belgian New Wave.

Hayat, quatorze ans, vit avec son père et son grand-père sur les rives du Bosphore, à Istanbul. Le premier, officiellement pêcheur, convoie de l’alcool et des femmes vers les bateaux de passage. Son aîné,
cloué au lit par des crises d’asthme, est un être égoïste et irascible. Délaissée de tous, la jeune Hayat
aborde le difficile passage à l’âge adulte.
Hayat, a 14 years-old girl lives with her father and her grandfather on the Bosphore shores in Istanbul.
The first one, who is officially a fisherman transports alcohol and women to passing boats. The other,
confined in bed by asthma attacks is a selfish and irascible being. Neglected by everyone, the young
Hayat is experiencing the difficult passage to adulthood.
REHA ERDEM
Né en 1960 à Istanbul. Après des études d'histoire à l'Université d'Istanbul, Reha Erdem apprend les
arcanes du cinéma à l'Université de Paris VIII dans la section Cinéma et Arts Plastiques. Il réalise trois
courts métrages à Paris. En 1988, il tourne un premier long métrage, Oh Moon primé dans plusieurs
festivals de cinéma. En 1999, il réalise son second long métrage A Run For Money puis suivent On est
bien peu de chose… et Des temps et des vents. Reha Erdem prépare actuellement son prochain film
Kosmos.

Pedro Costa. Jeanne Balibar, chanteuse, des répétitions aux enregistrements, des concerts rock aux
cours de chant lyrique, d’un grenier à Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines à la scène d’un café de Tokyo, de
Johnny Guitar à la Périchole d’Offenbach.

son premier long métrage O Sangue.
En 2003 il présente sa première installation vidéo à la Witte de With de Rotterdam, La Biennale de
Lyon, la Médiathèque de Sendai au Japon et au Musée des Beaux Arts de Bilbao. Récemment il a
contribué au Jeonju Digital Project de Corée avec un court métrage The Rabbit Hunter, qui a gagné le
Léopard d’Argent au Festival du Film de Locarno.

Storm est son sixième long métrage.

Philippe Blasband est né en 1964 à Téhéran (Iran). Il a été l’élève de Gaston Compère à l’Athénée Royale d’Ixelles et a obtenu
un diplôme à l’INSAS, en section montage. Il a écrit et co-écrit des scénarii de courts et longs métrages comme Une liaison
pornographique ou Max et Bobo, Thomas est amoureux entre autres. Il a aussi réalisé des longs métrages tous sélectionnés
au cours des précédentes éditions du Festival du Cinéma Européen en Essonne. Philippe Blasband a également écrit des
pièces pour le théâtre (Le Masque de Dragon ou Les Mangeuses de Chocolat). Au propre comme au figuré, toute l’œuvre de
Philippe Blasband est parsemée d’histoires de fantômes. Dans son dernier long métrage, Maternelle, il y revient à la manière
réaliste d’Un honnête commerçant, tout en poursuivant son aventure d’exploration féminine, entamée avec Coquelicots et La
Couleur des mots.

En 1987 Lucile Chaufour réalise son premier documentaire sur la scène punk hongroise. Dans les années 90, elle se lance

De formation musicale (ARPEJ, SAE Institute, Conservatoire du XXe) Lucile Chaufour joue dans de multiples groupes dont Primitiv
Combo, Duck & Cover, LKDS, Trottel, Sayag Jazz Machine… Elle monte les labels Le Cri du Tamarin et Makhno records.
Lucile Chaufour est également scénariste pour les éditions Casterman .

In 1987, Lucile Chaufour directed her first documentary about the Hungarian punk scene. During the 90’s, she created a television channel within the Prison de la Santé in Paris. She also ran directing workshops at the Moulin de la Vierge Day Hospital.
With a music background (ARPEJ, SAE Institute, Conservatoire of the XXth in Paris), Lucile Chaufour plays in various bands
such as Primitiv Combo, Duck & Cover, LKDS, Trottel, Sayag Jazz Machine… She set up the records companies ‘Le Cri du
Tamarin’ and ‘Makhno records’.
Lucile Chaufour also works as a scriptwriter for Casterman publishing.
In 2004, Lucile Chaufour released Violent days. She received two Awards for this film, the Grand Prix for Best French feature
film and the Gérard Frot-Coutaz Prize / Entre Vues Belfort 2004.

Au départ, il y a un match de football. Issa est gardien de but : il doit arrêter un penalty. Quelques
jours plus tôt, sur son lieu de travail - une agence de télémarketing - Issa se fait renvoyer. Le jeune
homme, qui vit chez sa grand-mère, rentre chez lui. Cette dernière, visiblement soucieuse, lui
annonce avoir fait une promesse à un marabout, qu'elle ne peut tenir...
At the beginning, there is a soccer game. Issa is the goalkeeper: He must stop a penalty. A few days
earlier, at his work place, Issa was fired from his job in a telemarketing company. The young man,
who lives at his grandmother’s place, went back home. His grandmother looked worried and told him

Mokrane vit à Paris. C’est un jeune homme volubile et insouciant. Sans être un SDF, Mokrane ne veut
pas travailler quotidiennement pas plus qu‘il ne veut de domicile fixe. Pour dormir, il squatte chez
des amis, ou des conquêtes d'un soir. Mais, lorsque Mokrane rencontre Garance, sa vie, qui jusque
là n’était qu'errance, se transforme.
Mokrane lives in Paris. He is a talkative and insouciant young man. Although he is not a homeless
person, he doesn’t want to work on a daily basis or have a home. He sleeps at friends’ places or with
women he just meets for the night. When Mokrane meets Garance, his roving life changes.

Né en1974. Idir Serghine a suivi des études de philosophie à l’Université Paris X. Il fait une courte expérience journalistique. Il écrit et réalise 3 courts métrages dont Issa, et L'Alsace et la Lorraine. Il travaille
à l’écriture de son premier long métrage, Funambule(s), avec Samuel Jadok. Malheureusement, son ami
et co-auteur meurt en novembre 2004. Le film ne sera terminé qu’en 2008.
Born in 1974. Idir Serghine studied philosophy at the University Paris X. He worked as a journalist for
a short time. He wrote and directed three short films, among which are Issa and L'Alsace et la
Lorraine. He wrote the script of his first feature Le Funambule(s) with Samuel Jadok. Unfortunately

Heydrich, the Reichsprotektor of Czechoslovakia is found murdered. To prevent the Nazi’s retaliation
against the people, the resistance hands a collaborator over to the German authorities instead of the
real murderer, who hides in the city.
En 1943, Fritz Lang n’a pas tourné depuis 2 ans. Il n’est plus en contrat avec la 20th Century-Fox et
ne trouve pas de nouveau sujet. L’annonce de l’assassinat de Reinhard Heydrich, le Reichsprotektor
de Tchécoslovaquie, lui donne soudain l’élan pour un nouveau projet. Ce sera Hangmen Also Die (Les
bourreaux meurent aussi), film haletant sur la résistance tchèque, dont la fabrication a aussi été un
combat, entre les exigences de la dramaturgie hollywoodienne et les nécessaires intentions politiques, dont Bertolt Brecht, qui a participé au scénario, était un farouche partisan. Mais à l’arrivée,
c’est le cinéma qui gagne.

In 1943, Fritz Lang had not shot any film for two years. His contract with the 20th Century-Fox was
over and he could not find any subject for a new film plot. The murder of Reinhard Heydrich, the
Reichsprotektor of Czecoslovakia gave him a new momentum for a new project. The result was
Hangmen Also Die, a breathtaking film about the Czech resistance. The making of the film was also
a fight between Hollywood demands regarding the actual drama and the necessary political intentions, of which Bertolt Brecht, who participated in the script writing, was a fierce advocate. At the
end, it is a victory for cinema.

Jeunes cinéastes, polonais et français, encore peu connus en France, qui en quelques courts métrages ont déjà dessiné un
style, une trajectoire cinématographique, que leurs futurs longs métrages devraient affirmer.

Four days of screening and artistic meetings with young Polish and French filmmakers. This is the result of our exciting meetings with the Wroclaw Era New Horizon Festival (Poland) and the Femis school (France) as well as the close collaboration with
the Polish Institute in Paris and Kino Polska 2. We will attend the closing night of the later event at the Reflet Médicis Cinema
(Paris 6th) on Tuesday 20 /10 at 6.30 pm for an Off-Site Film Screening selected by us.
Young Polish and French filmmakers, who are not yet well known in France but have already shown in their short films a definite style and personal path which are likely to be strengthened by their future feature films.

la liberté d’Arash T. Riahi (voir p. 53) est proposé comme
« 4e film européen » pendant le festival.
Avec le soutien du Rectorat de Versailles, un dossier pédagogique réalisé par Alain Vauchelles (enseignant en cinéma) est
disponible sur le site de Cinessonne.
Une sélection d’une vingtaine de courts métrages européens
est présentée à deux jurys de collégiens et lycéens.

En 1964, Henri-Georges Clouzot choisit Romy Schneider et Serge Reggiani pour être les vedettes de
L’Enfer. Un projet énigmatique et insolite, un budget illimité, un film qui devait être un évènement
cinématographique à sa sortie. Pourtant ce film restera inachevé. Serge Bromberg revient sur les
traces du projet démesuré.
In 1964, Henri-Georges Clouzot chose Romy Schneider and Serge Reggiani, to be the leads of
L’Enfer. An enigmatic and original project; an unlimited budget; a film which was meant to be the
cinematographic event at its release. Nevertheless this film remains unfinished. Serge Bromberg
returns on the tracks of the disproportionate project.

20 ANS DE COLLÈGE AU CINÉMA
FESTIVAL HORS LES MURS
Une journée de réflexion est proposée aux enseignants du
département autour des questions de la création cinématographique et de la notion d’auteur, en s’appuyant sur l’œuvre
de Roman Polanski, parrain des 20 ans du dispositif Collège
au cinéma en Essonne.
Pour célébrer cet anniversaire le film Chacun son cinéma (voir
p. 53) a été choisi en hommage au 7e Art. Des classes de
Collège au cinéma travailleront toute l’année sur une partie
des courts métrages dans le cadre d’ateliers pédagogiques.
En collaboration avec l'association Lire c'est Vivre, nous organisons 2 séances de cinéma au sein de la Maison d'Arrêt de
Fleury-Mérogis. Soutenir la diffusion culturelle (la Littérature
et le Cinéma) est au cœur des missions de Lire C'est Vivre et
de Cinessonne. Une journée autour du cinéma (longs et courts
métrages) sera l'occasion de regards et d'échanges croisés
autour du cinéma. Les détenus participeront au prix du Public
du court métrage à cette occasion.
