Preparations for the XXV IUSSP Conference that will be held at the Vinci
Convention Centre in Tours, France, from 18 to 23 July 2005 are well
advanced. By the deadline for submission of paper and poster proposals,
the IUSSP had received almost 2400 submissions, the largest number ever
for an IUSSP Conference. The possibility of making submissions online
through the Conference website run by Princeton University allowed
persons from 140 countries to submit paper proposals in a secure and
efficient manner. Organisers accepted 578 papers for the 128 sessions
listed in Conference Information Bulletin 1. The Steering Committee for
the Conference met in Paris from 6 to 8 December to complete the
preparation of the scientific program and approved an additional 34
sessions. In addition to the 162 paper sessions, the Poster Organisers
considered 1077 poster proposals and allocated over 600 posters to the
five all-day poster sessions that will take place in the main hall of the
Vinci Conference Centre. Therefore, it is expected that a total of 1363
papers or posters will be presented at the Conference.
Additional events will take place at the Conference. The French National
Organising Committee is organising 16 sessions that will examine
reproduction and family structures, aging, international migration, and
spatial population dynamics. The UNFPA is organising a plenary on
the “ICPD Vision: How Far Has the Eleven-Year Journey Taken Us?” that
will be moderated by Thoraya Obaid, Executive Director of the UNFPA.
Two plenary debates will be held as well as several skill building sessions.
The preliminary scientific program of all paper and poster sessions and
their titles together with the names of chairpersons, discussants and
authors will be available on the Conference website by April 15, 2005 at
http://www.iussp.org/France2005/index.php

iussp2005.princeton.edu and will include the date, time and room number
of each session. Participants will receive the final scientific program as
Information Bulletin No. 2 in their Conference bag upon registration in
Tours.
The IUSSP plans to post Conference papers on its website and include
them in a CD-Rom which will be distributed to participants at the
Conference. Paper authors are urged to submit their final papers through
the Conference website by 1 May 2005 and no later than 15 June 2005
because the website will close on that date. Abstracts of accepted papers
and posters will be published in the Conference Book of Abstracts; thus
authors should finalise the revisions of their abstract on the website by
31 March 2005.
Other crucial deadlines are coming up soon. 15 February 2005 is the
deadline for submission of applications for funding and registration fees
increase after 15 April 2005. The IUSSP is fully aware of the problem posed
for Conference participants by the decline in the value of the dollar and
urges participants to assess their projected costs carefully prior to the
deadline for financial assistance. If you wish to apply for assistance to

cover some of the costs of attending the Conference, go

assistance form. Since funding will be limited,
participants are encouraged to seek funding from
institutions or funding agencies in their country of
residence and to book their air travel early because fares
to Europe rise sharply in the May to August period.
Le Congrès servira de cadre à d’autres manifestations. Le Comité
national français d’organisation a mis sur pied 16 séances
consacrées à la reproduction et aux structures familiales, au
vieillissement, aux migrations internationales et à la
dynamique spatiale de la population. Le FNUAP organise une
séance plénière sur le thème : CIPD et perspectives. Le point
après onze ans de voyage, présidée par Madame Thoraya Obaid,
Directrice Exécutive de FNUAP. Il y aura aussi deux débats en
séance plénière et plusieurs séances de formation spécialisée.
Early booking of lodging in Tours is also advised to
reduce the costs of attending the Conference. An
accommodation service, run by the Vinci Centre will help
participants reserve lodging in Tours. Several options
exist at subsidised prices ranging from approximately
40 to 263 euros per night for a hotel room to 20 euros per
night for a room in a youth hostel or in one of the

Requests for accommodation will be processed on a firstcome-first-served basis. Availability of accommodations
cannot be guaranteed for requests received after 15 May

Chaque séance sera clairement repérable quant à sa date, son

L’UIESP a prévu de publier sur son site les communications
faites au Congrès et de les réunir sur un CD-rom qui sera remis
aux participants. Les auteurs de communications voudront bien
en faire parvenir la version définitive par l’intermédiaire du
site web dès le 1 mai 2005 et au plus tard le 15 juin 2005.
Passé cette date le site du congrès ne les recevra plus. Les résumés
des communications et posters retenus seront publiés dans Le
Recueil des résumés du Congrès. Il en découle que les résumés
devront être téléchargés sur le site web du congrès sous leur
aspect définitif avant le 31 mars 2005.

(TGV). International travellers can take the TGV train
directly to Tours from Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris.
Participants should contact the nearest French
Consulate in a timely fashion to determine whether a
visa is required to enter France. Participants that
encounter visa problems should contact the French

XXVe Congrès International de la Population
L’organisation du XXVe Congrès UIESP sur la Population,
qui se tiendra au Centre des Congrès Le Vinci, à Tours, du 18
au 23 juillet 2005, suit son cours. Au jour de la date butoir
pour l’envoi des communications ou des posters l’UIESP avait
reçu quelques 2400 projets, chiffre record pour un congrès de
l’UIESP. Des participants originaires de 140 pays ont
transmis leur projet par Internet au site UIESP géré par
l’Université de Princeton. Ces communications ont été reçues
sans encombre et en toute sécurité. Les organisateurs en ont
retenu 578 qui seront ventilées sur les 128 séances dont la
liste figure sur le Bulletin N° 1 du Congrès. Lors de sa réunion
à Paris, du 6 au 8 décembre 2004, le Comité de Pilotage du
Congrès a mené à son terme la préparation du programme
scientifique et approuvé l’ouverture de 34 séances
supplémentaires. Parallèlement aux 162 séances consacrées
aux communications, les responsables chargés des posters ont
examiné 1077 propositions. 600 ont été retenues et seront
affichées lors des cinq séances posters, chacune durant une
journée entière. Ces séances se tiendront dans le grand hall du
Centre des Congrès Le Vinci. C’est donc un total de 1363
communications et posters qui sera présenté lors du Congrès.
Nos limitations budgétaires font qu’il est conseillé aux
participants de solliciter l’aide financière d’institutions ou
d’organismes de financement de leur propre pays. Il leur est
aussi recommandé de retenir leurs billets d’avion le plus tôt
possible pour cause d’importante augmentation saisonnière des
tarifs aériens en Europe entre mai et août.
Il leur est aussi recommandé de réserver au plus tôt leur
logement à Tours, par souci d’économie. Le Centre des Congrès
Le Vinci se charge d’aider les participants à se loger. Il y a
plusieurs options d’hébergement : environ 40 à 263 Euros la
nuit en chambre d’hôtel, ou 20 Euros la nuit en Auberge de

Attend IUSSP Plenary on International
Migration at PAA
The IUSSP is organising a Plenary Session on
“Population and Development” that will be held on
Wednesday evening, 30 March 2005, 6:30 to 8:30 pm, in
Salons K-L, Level Five at the Philadelphia Marriott. The
Session will spotlight the work of the IUSSP Committee
on International Migration that was chaired by Douglas
Massey and, in particular, the book on International
Migration: Prospects and Policies in a Global Market that
was co-authored by Douglas Massey and Edward Taylor
and released in 2004 in the International Studies in
Demography Series, published by Oxford University
Press.

Host Country Sought for XXVI IUSSP
International Population Conference in 2009
The IUSSP sponsors an International Population
Conference every 4 years and thus is looking ahead to its
XXVI Conference which will be held in 2009. The IUSSP
invites national population associations to consider
serving as the host for that Conference. The host country
sponsor is expected to handle local arrangements and
costs for the conference. If you and other members of your
national association would like to explore the possibility
of organising the 2009 conference in your country, please

Séance plénière de l’UIESP sur la migration
internationale au congrès de la PAA
L’UIESP organise une Séance Plénière sur le thème “Population
et développement” dans la soirée du mercredi 30 mars 2005,
de 06:30 à 08:30 dans les Salons K-L, au cinquième niveau de
l’hôtel Marriott à Philadelphie. La Séance se concentrera sur
les travaux réalisés par la Commission d’étude UIESP sur la
Migration Internationale sous la présidence de Douglas Massey
et, tout particulièrement, sur la publication d’International
Migration: Prospects and Policies in a Global Market par
Douglas Massey et Edward Taylor. Sorti en 2004, ce livre est
publié par Oxford University Press dans la série ‘International
Studies in Demography’.
Appel à candidature pour la tenue du XXVIe
Congrès International sur la Population de
l’UIESP en 2009
Tous les quatre ans se tient un Congrès International sur la
Population, sous l’égide de l’UIESP. Celle-ci se préoccupe déjà
du XXVI e Congrès qui aura lieu en 2009 et invite les
associations nationales d’études de population à présenter la
candidature de leur pays pour sa tenue. La logistique ainsi que
les frais de tenue du Congrès incombent au pays organisateur.
Toute proposition à cet effet, émanant de vous-même ou d’autres
membres de votre association nationale, est à adresser par email
à la Secrétaire Générale de l’UIESP, Mary M. Kritz

Secretariat Changes – Program Officer Sought
In October 2004 the Secretariat recruited a Conference
Assistant to help handle the growing volume of inquiries
related to the July 2005 International Population
Conference, in particular those dealing with registration
and financial assistance matters. The IUSSP is happy to
welcome Ms. Corinne Durand on board for this post.
Erik Klijzing has resigned as Executive Director effective
1 December 2004 and will leave the Union as of 1 March
2005. Mary Ellen Zuppan, IUSSP Program Officer, will
become the new IUSSP Executive Director as of that date.
Congratulations to Sidney Goldstein – 15th
IUSSP Laureate
As this issue of the Newsletter goes to press, we learned
that the IUSSP Council selected Dr. Sidney Goldstein,
professor emeritus of Brown University, as the 15th IUSSP
Laureate. The IUSSP will issue an announcement to the
membership in the coming weeks that provides further
details on the ceremony at which the Award will be
officially bestowed on Dr. Goldstein.
The IUSSP is currently recruiting a new Program Officer
to replace Mary Ellen. Nationals of the European Union
(EU) or residents of the EU with work authorization who
might be interested in the program officer post can review
the job description at http://www.iussp.org.

de mortalité ; de Zeng Yi sur Longévité et bonne santé en Chine
; de James Vaupel sur Modèles évolutionistes et trajectoires de
mortalité par âge.
L’UIESP, en association avec le MPIDR, le CICRED et l’INED,
offre 21 bourses pour permettre à des étudiants doctorants ou à
des docteurs diplômés depuis moins de trois ans d’y participer.

were: Jose Alberto de Carvalho (President, Brazil),
Antonio Golini (Italy), Gavin Jones (Australia), Yaw
Ofosu (Ghana), Julieta Quilodran (Mexico), and Susan
Watkins (USA). Jacques Véron (France) was absent due
to illness but consulted by telephone. Jacques Véron (France)

IUSSP Membership Subsidy Awards
As announced in IUSSP Bulletin no.12, the UNFPA
provided a generous grant to the IUSSP in 2004 that
enabled it to start a new project to build and strengthen
scientific networks. As part of this project, the IUSSP
provided five-year Membership Subsidy Awards to 123
population specialists from the lowest income countries
in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Central and Eastern
Europe. Eligibility for these awards was restricted to
nationals residing in low-income countries and working
in the field of population for national or local institutions.
Only individuals who had never been an IUSSP member
were eligible to apply.

Joint IUSSP-MPIDR Summer School
In the section “New IUSSP Members” of the current
Bulletin these new members are listed separately. The
IUSSP congratulates these new members and welcomes
them to the Union.
From 25 July to 2 August 2005, the IUSSP together with
the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research
(MPIDR) will conduct a Summer School in Rostock,
Germany, on “Frontiers of Demographic Research on
Mortality and Longevity.” The training program will

Comme annoncé dans notre bulletin N° 12, le FNUAP nous a
octroyé une généreuse allocation financière en 2004. Ceci nous
a permis de lancer un nouveau projet de création et de
renforcement de réseaux scientifiques. Dans le cadre de ce projet,
l’UIESP subventionne des membres boursiers pour une durée
de cinq ans. 123 spécialistes en matière de population,
originaires de pays les moins développés d’Afrique, d’Asie,
d’Amérique Latine et d’Europe Centrale ou Orientale ont été
sélectionnés. Ces subventions ont été réservées à des chercheurs
originaires de ces pays et y résidant, engagés dans des travaux
sur la population dans le cadre d’organismes nationaux ou
locaux. Elles ont été exclusivement attribuées à des individus
n’ayant jamais été affiliés à l’UIESP.

Seminar on “The New History of Kinship”,
Paris, France, 1–2 October 2004
The IUSSP Scientific Committee on Historical
Demography organised a seminar on The New
History of Kinship in collaboration with the Institut
National d’ Etudes Démographiques (INED), l’Ecole
des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS),
with institutional support from the Research Group
in Economic Demography at Lund University,
Sweden. Financial support was provided by INED,
the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the EHESS,
and the IUSSP. The seminar brought together
international specialists working in the field of
historical kinship studies to discuss recent research
on extended kinship and family networks. The
authors of the fourteen papers presented at the
seminar adopted one of two approaches. The first
approach considered kinship as socially
constructed and the second approach viewed
kinship from a biological and genetic perspective;
all papers focused on the effect of extended kinship
on demographic and social outcomes including
mortality, fertility, migration and social mobility.

International Studies in Population
In July 2004 the IUSSP signed a contract with Kluwer
Academic Publishers, now merged with Springer Science
and Business Media B.V., for the publication of IUSSP
volumes in a new Series, International Studies in Population,
which will supersede the former IUSSP Series International
Studies in Demography with Oxford University Press.
Three to five volumes of edited seminar volumes or single
topic monographs will be published annually. Volumes
will be scientifically reviewed and edited under the
auspices of the IUSSP. The first volume to appear in the
new Series will be “Riding the Age Waves: Population,
Resources and Development” edited by Shripad
Tuljapurkar, Ian Pool and Vipan Prachubmoah. Other
volumes are in the pipeline.

Paradox in Post-Adjustment Health Care, Lisa Ann Richey.

presented at the IUSSP Seminar on Macro-Meso-Micro
Influences on Health: Changing Patterns of Morbidity
and Mortality held in Yaounde, Cameroon in June 2002.

a organisé un séminaire intitulé Nouvelle histoire de la
Parenté en collaboration avec l’INED (Institut National
d’Études Démographiques), l’EHESS, (École des Hautes
Études en Sciences Sociales), avec le soutien institutionnel
du Groupe de Recherche en Démographie Économique de
l’Université suédoise de Lund et l’aide financière de

Séminaire “Santé et reproduction en Europe
Orientale et dans l’ancienne Union soviétique”,
Bucarest, Roumanie, du 17 au 20 octobre 2004
l’INED, du Ministère Français des Affaires Étrangères, de
l’EHESS et de l’UIESP. Ce séminaire a réuni des chercheurs
internationaux spécialisés dans l’historique de la parenté. Ils
ont examiné l’état des recherches sur la parenté élargie et les
réseaux familiaux. Les 14 communications ont abordé le thème
sous deux angles : soit en considérant la parenté comme une
construction sociale, soit du point de vue biologique et
génétique. Toutes les communications se sont concentrées sur
les conséquences sociales et démographiques de la parenté
élargie dans des domaines tels que la mortalité, la fécondité,
les migrations et la mobilité sociale. Le séminaire a donné lieu
à des débats animés sur les contributions et limitations
potentielles de la recherche génétique en matière d’étude
historique de la parenté et vice-versa. Le contenu des

Le Comité scientifique UIESP de santé dans le domaine de la
reproduction a organisé un séminaire intitulé Santé et
reproduction en Europe Orientale en collaboration avec
l’Institut Santé et Reproduction en Europe Orientale, avec l’aide
financière de l’UIESP, du FNUAP-Roumanie et de la CroixRouge suisse. 44 chercheurs, décideurs et experts en problèmes
de santé et reproduction ont fait le point sur l’état actuel de la
recherche dans ce domaine appliqué aux économies de transition
des pays de l’Europe Orientale et de l’ancienne Union
soviétique. Les participants ont constaté des améliorations
substantielles en matière de mortalité maternelle dans un certain
nombre de pays de cette zone suite à la légalisation de
l’avortement. Il n’en est pas moins vrai que le taux de mortalité
maternelle reste inacceptable et qu’il n’est généralement pas
répondu aux besoins en matière de contraception. Les
communications se sont concentrées sur les causes économiques,
sociales, politiques aussi bien qu’historiques et psychologiques
de cette restriction locale en matière de contraception efficace.
En outre, des séances ont eu pour thème l’issue des grossesses,
le SIDA et la séropositivité, la détection des cancers du col de
l’utérus ainsi que les besoins des jeunes adultes et des groupes

Seminar on “Reproductive Health Issues in
Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union”,
Bucharest, Romania, 17-20 October 2004
The IUSSP Scientific Committee on Reproductive Health
organised a seminar on Reproductive Health Issues in
Eastern Europe in collaboration with the East European
Institute for Reproductive Health and with the financial
support of the IUSSP, UNFPA-Romania, and the Swiss
Red Cross. The seminar brought together 44 researchers,
policy makers, and experts on reproductive health issues
to present recent research on reproductive health trends
in the transition economies of Eastern Europe and the
former Soviet Union. Participants noted that there have

Environmental and Health Dimensions”, 29
November – 15 December 2004
The Population-Environment Research Network held an
online cyberseminar addressing the environmental, social
and health dimensions of urban expansion and
comparing and contrasting processes of urban expansion
and transformation in developing and developed
countries. The seminar included a background paper by
Charles L. Redman and Nancy Jones and statements by
10 experts on urbanization processes and impacts.

Le Réseau de Recherche Environnement et Population a tenu
un cyberséminaire en ligne sur les implications
environnementales, sociales et sanitaires de l’expansion
urbaine, incluant une étude comparée de l’expansion et de la
transformation urbaines dans les pays développés et en
développement. Le séminaire s’est articulé autour d’une
communication de fond présentée par Charles L. Redman et
Nancy Jones, accompagnée de rapports émanant de 10
spécialistes en matière d’impact et de processus d’urbanisation.

been improvements in maternal mortality rates for a
number of countries in the region following the
legalisation of abortion. However, maternal mortality
rates remain unacceptably high and contraceptive needs
are largely unmet. Papers focused on the economic, social,
political as well as historical and psychological factors
limiting the use of effective contraception in the region.
In addition, sessions examined pregnancy outcome,
HIV/AIDS, cervical cancer screening, and the needs of

Definitions, Categories and Empirical Analysis”
Tentatively scheduled for 15-16 July 2005, Paris

Organised by the IUSSP Scientific Committee on
Historical Demography and the University of Utah, this
seminar will bring together historical demographers,
economic historians, sociologists, anthropologists,
geneticists, as well as scholars from other disciplines
interested in exchanging the latest scientific knowledge
on effects of kinship on demographic and social
behaviour.
This Seminar to be organised by the IUSSP Committee on
Historical Demography and the Ecole des Hautes Etudes
en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) hopes to make a significant
contribution to understanding how vulnerability is
defined and measured. The Committee welcomes
proposals of both qualitative and quantitative studies of
vulnerable populations in the distant past, the more recent
past, and the present, and encourages critical approaches
to the term vulnerability that examine how different social
and institutional systems defined the vulnerable, as well
as papers that focus on social, economic, demographic,
political and familial processes that created vulnerable
populations.
The IUSSP Scientific Committee on Historical
Demography invites researchers in the field to submit a
200-word abstract and curriculum vitae by February 1,
2005 to Geraldine P. Mineau ([email protected])
with a copy to Diana Lane ([email protected]).
While participants are encouraged to seek their own
funding for travel, the organisers will support the stay in
Salt Lake City for all participants and travel costs, to a
very limited extent.
The Committee invites researchers to submit a 200-word
abstract and curriculum vitae before February 1, 2005 to
Patrice Bourdelais ([email protected]) with a
copy to Caroline Baros ([email protected]). While
the organisers will support the stay in Paris, participants
are encouraged to seek their own travel funding.
Those who wish to apply for financial assistance for

historiens de la démographie et de l’économie, sociologues,
anthropologues, généticiens et spécialistes d’autres disciplines
intéressés par la comparaison des recherches récentes sur
l’impact de la parenté sur le comportement social et
démographique.

catégories, analyse empirique”.
Prévu pour le 15 et 16 juillet 2005, Paris
Organisé par le Comité UIESP de Démographie Historique et
l’École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales ce séminaire se
donnera pour but de contribuer de façon significative à l’étude
des méthodes d’évaluation et de définition de la vulnérabilité.
Le Comité sollicite des contributions dans le domaine de l’étude
qualitative et quantitative des populations vulnérables dans un
passé lointain, un passé plus récent et dans le présent ; il
accueillera une réévaluation critique du concept de vulnérabilité
à travers l’analyse des différentes définitions de la vulnérabilité
données par les systèmes sociaux et institutionnels, aussi bien
que les communications centrées sur les schémas sociaux,
économiques, démographiques, politiques et familiaux présidant
à l’apparition de populations vulnérables.
