Q The small world of Maison Close The brand is positioned in a rapidly expanding niche: the niche of sexy, even naughty underwear. What is this market, and what are its codes? Diving into a voluptuous world, where the offer triggers off the demand. BY VALÉRIE CHARIER M aison Close may be introduced as a “sexy” brand, yet the term is such a subjective one and has been so debased that it is hard to figure out what kind of offer it relates to in reality. The brand is famous for its strip teasing sessions at the Paris lingerie fairs. Its offer comprises its fully laced slips (that it has called ‘catsuits’) and its ‘bare bottoms’. Nicolas Busnel, the manager, tells us more about its positioning and its intentions to develop. Créations Lingerie: Why did you choose a sexy brand? Nicolas Busnel: It was an emotional choice, not a marketing one. We thought that there was hardly any offer on the market and that they were either bottom range or very expensive top range. We wanted to offer affordable top range... Knowing that Agent provocateur, which we do love a lot, was in those days only available in the United Kingdom… C. L.: The word ‘sexy’ covers a wide 94 notion... what is the positioning of the Maison Close offer and what are the limits the brand set for itself? N. B.: We do not really want to impose frames so as to keep a genuine creativity. Therefore in principle we have set no limits. Yet, we do not like too showy a sexy trend, and that is our preference. For instance, we do not adhere to the system of split pants and favour opening pants, through a play on layers of fabrics. C. L.: What are your key items? N. B.: The bare breast bras and bare bottom pants, but also our ‘catsuits’: this type of item border line with the ready to wear is a favourite with customers and we are certainly going to develop it even further in our collections… C. L.: We feel that this sexy niche has become a competitive one... How do you see this offer, and does it meet the demand? N. B.: It has indeed, more and more brands are offering sexy underwear, whether they are small brands which are starting or fa- mous names which are developing an offer within their collections… I think that there is a growing demand for these type of products and that it has been born precisely out of the many offers. C. L.: How are you managing this offer to meet the needs of the market? N. B.: One of our characteristics is to work in short circuits, with six new collections throughout the year and not over two seasons as is traditional in lingerie. These collections add some ten accessories per year. That enables us to work with continuous flow and with stock. So there are such novelties and at the same time, we are Bare bottom set, ‘Villa des Lys’ collection (2013) Parure de la collection “Nuit blanche“ (2013) following up products launched either the previous year or years before which are selling well. This brings us to 11 collections a year… C. L.: So you are permanently offering stock replenishment, aren’t you? N. B.: We are. It is somewhat complex to manage, but it enables us to be able to deliver when our clients need it. And it also prevents overstocking in stores and therefore discount sales. We have even taken back those items which had not been sold, only to offer them for sale in other countries where the said items would sell better. There too, our aim is to avoid discount sales since thus the distributors enjoy the most interesting margins – with sales coefficients of around 3.3. C. L.: Where are your collections being produced? N. B.: The fabrics which we are using come from almost everywhere, we have not set ourselves any guidelines on this point... We most specifically have a lace, on an item that has been selling really well over the last few years, which comes from the United States... We are producing in Asia since we found the best production quality over there. Our items are not easy to assemble, and we have tried over and over again, without any success, to have them made closer to home… I have not given up on having part of the collection entirely made in France, but so far I have not yet found the right party… 9-00)8ìOì3ª8ìOì)48)1&6)ììeìCréations Lingerie C. L.: What are your distribution networks, and what does each one represent in your total sales? N. B.: We are relying on three networks: the Internet sales – through customers’ sites and through our own retail website -, the department stores and the multi brand independents – in lingerie, but also in the ready to wear. Each represents a third of our sales. C. L.: What is the main purchasing incentive for the consumer? Do you think you are a purchase she is hiding? N. B.: No, on the contrary, I think that women feel they are more valuable when they are buying our items. At least this is the feedback we are getting from our customers... In the Galeries Lafayette in Berlin, for instance, we are positioned between La Perla and Chantal Thomass, in a luxury and glamour environment in fact… I think that on this point, Agent Provocateur has opened doors in the minds of the consumers and distributors alike… C. L.: It is often heard that rather wellrounded ladies go for sexy corsetry... Do you share the same feeling? N. B.: We are working our collections from a UK sizes 32B to 36D and our best sales are for the time being focused on the 34B and 10. However, we do indeed think that there is a demand and aspire to create deeper cups in the future, with the required hold and the signature which is Maison Close’s very own. C. L.: What are your plans for the brand? N. B.: We are certainly not short of them, but the most pregnant ones are the creation, for January 2014, of a true nightwear lingerie line – we have been looking for our identity in this field for some time – and the opening of two flagships in Paris and New York. We have no intention of setting up our own shops, it is not our job, but we are looking for a partnership with a distributor, even with brands which are complementary to our offer, and not automatically in lingerie… Q MAISON CLOSE KEY FIGURES eì6%2(ì(%8)ì3*ì746)%(-2+B 2009 eìì%0)7ì46-')B €89 to €129 a set, up to €200 a ‘catsuit’ eììì8%ïBì18 (3 of whom dedicated) eììì7%0)7ì89623:)6B euro 1.5 million eìì<4368ì6%8)B 35% eìì%-2ì)<4368ì'39286-)7BìGermany, Italy, Russia, Dubaiï 95
