Les Racines du Ciel,
A company taking off …
An ex-buyer from Nina Ricci Japan and a fashion designer launched the company « Les Racines du Ciel »
in 2005. This name was chosen to pay homage to the novel by Romain Gary - an environmental work.
Nathalie Goyette and Christian Tournafol made a successful attempt at “consuming less, but
consuming better”, as Nathalie likes to put it.
Their design for ready-to-wear for women combines the aesthetic with quality
and ethical production. As far as the design is concerned “we wanted to create
timeless products”, she stresses. The raw materials - organic cotton, lacquered
silk from China, paper, linen, alpaca - are what the manufacturing units work
with. These are products for which there exists no equal apart from the
rarity value, or the expertise necessary in their production.
The lacquered silk is produced in China from a unique traditional process:
it is covered with a paste made of sweet potato, then placed in earth before
being dried in the sun and rinsed 30 times.
The designs are made up at the « Brocéliande Confection » workshop in Brittany,
apart from jerseys which are put together in Portugal. For the summer 2009 collection,
certain designs will be tie-dyed by a Parisian artist, using traditional vegetable dyes.
The designs are sold in France through a select network of 25 boutiques, and overseas in Germany and Italy.
The style of the garments, their quality, and the social commitment which underpins the
whole can only attract major outlets. The creators of the company did in fact collaborate
with Monoprix in 2007 by producing ten designs under the label « Les Racines du ciel
pour Monoprix ».
