Depuispeu, cettecritiquea memeeu tendancea s'exprimerpar le biais de generalisationsprovocatrices(Law 1981a; Clarence-Smithdansce volume). Plusieursraisonsexpliquentla desaffectionactuelledes chercheursenversla problematique des modes de production. La decouverte (curieusementsoudaine) des limites inherentes au concept de mode de productiona bien reconstituerla complexite du mouvementhistoriqueet de l'organisationsociale est certainementla plus immediateet la plus evidente de ces raisons. Mais ce n'est pas la seule. 11se pourraitmemeque ce ne soit pas la plus importante.Ce sont ces autresraisonsque j'aimeraismettreen lumiere dans les paragraphesqui suivent. Ce texte n'est pas un essai bibliographique,meme s'il peut assurerune certaine transition a la bibliographiequi suit. L'objectif poursuivi vise plutot a reconstituer l'itinerairesinueuxd'un debataussi passionnantque passionne,et a saisirla dynamique s'interesse politico-intellectuellelargequi rythmeses evolutions.Ce texte, d'autre ' part, au debattel qu'il s'est derouleen France.Non pas que la discussion proposduconcept de mode de productionait 6te inexistanteen dehors de l'Hexagone. De nombreuses publications prouvent le contraire(Hindressand Hirst 1975, 1978; Anderson 1980; Crummy and Stewart 1981a; Diamond 1979; O'Laughlin 1975b; Bloch 1975). Mais parce que cette discussionfut generalementpluseclatee, elle est egalementplusdifficile a cerner, plus difficile a saisir comme un tout unifie. D'oii l'impossibilited'en rendre compte ici. Enfin, ce texte reste avanttoutun exercice exploratoire.Il s'apparentea un ensemble d'hypotheses largementouvertes, qu'une rechercheplus approfondieaurait permisde nuancer,d'affiner,peut-etrede refuteren certainscas. Maperceptiondudebat sur le concept de mode de productionreste largementtributairede la position que j'occupais au cours des annees70: celle d'unjeune chercheurmarginalementinteressea l'Afrique, consommateUrd'idees nouvelles, pour qui l'anthropologieeconomique a represente un mouvement intellectuel extremementstimulantpar les problematiques qu'il a developpees. 1. Au coursdes annees60, la reflexionsurles societesprecapitalistesafricaines(dupoint de vue qui nous occupe ici) s'engage dans trois directionsdiff6rentes.La premiere, alimentee par certainschercheurstres prochesdu P.C.F. et s'activantau sein du Centre d'etudes et de recherchesmarxistes,tourneautourd'undebatessentiellementtheorique: verifier l'utilite du concept de mode de productionasiatiqueia bien saisir la realitedes societes precapitalistes, africaines le cas echeant; confronterle concept a l'etat des connaissancessurles societes non marchandes;etendre,parle biaisdu conceptde mode de productionnotamment,le materialismehistoriquea un domained'etudesjusque-la principalementexplore par le fonctionnalisme,le structuralisme,et les grandscourants de l'anthropologie economique anglo-saxonne: le formalisme et le substantivisme (CERM 1969, 1973). Ce debat, auquel sont activementmeles plusieurshistoriensde l'Europe de l'Est (Dunn 1982), connait une vigueur indiscutablejusqu'en 1966-67 environ. Incapable de se renouveler par le biais d'etudes de terrains, et sombrant frequemment dans des generalites steriles, la reflexion sur le mode de production asiatiqueconnaitcependantparla suiteun declin manifeste,dansla litteratureanthropologique franqaisetout au moins. A partirdu milieu des annees60, les travauxde C. Meillassouxcommencentiaexercer une influence considerableau sein de l'anthropologieeconomique(Godelier 1974). Il s'agit de la deuxieme directionvers laquelle s'oriente, en France, la reflexion sur les societes precapitalistes.Avec Meillassoux, la recherchesur les societes precapitalistes prend un nouvel elan. Tributairede la "sociologie dynamique" developp6e par Balandier et Mercier (Moniot 1976), inspire par les 6crits de Marx, le projet de Meillassoux est ambitieux:construireun modele socio-economiquedes communautes d'autosubsistance;elaborerune theorie du developpementeconomiqueapplicableaux pays sous-developpes;mettreau pointunemethodede recherchefondeesurun ensemble de problematiqueset non sur la specialisationdisciplinaire(Meillassoux1964a, 1964b, 1964-68). L'importancede C. Meillassouxdans l'anthropologieeconomiquefranqaise se mesure a l'ambition meme de ce projetde recherche:defricherun terrainneuf a la lumiere de problematiquesoriginales;developperde nouvellesperspectivesen matiere de recherche;lier pratiqueprofessionnelleet pratiquepolitique. Bien que contestes sous certainspoints(Terray1969a), les travauxde C. Meillassoux constitueront,pour plusieursjeunes anthropologuesfrangais,une base fortpertinentea partirde laquelle entreprendrel'etude des societes precapitalistes.Au coursdes annees suivantes, les problematiqueset hypothesesenoncees parMeillassouxdevaienttoutefois subirtout un ensemblede reformulationsinteressanteset originales. C'est a la suite de leur sejour au Congo que G. Dupreet P.P. Rey developpentle conceptde modede productionlignager,et celui d'articulationdes modes de production(Dupre et Rey 1969; Rey 1969, 1971). C'est 'ala meme p6riode, plus precisementen 1969, que C. Coquery-Vidrovitch,dequede l'imprecisiondu conceptde mode de productionasiatiquea bien saisir la realitespecifiquedes soci6t6s africaines, avance un nouveau concept normatif,celui de mode de productionafricain(CoqueryVidrovitch 1969b). C'est egalementen 1969, iala suite d'un sejouren Cote-d'Ivoire,et profondement influence par L. Althusser, qu'EmmanuelTerray propose un cadre general de relecture materialistedes societ6s dites primitives (Terray 1969a). Cette relecturea pourpivot centralles conceptsde modede productionet de formationsociale. Enfin, c'est vers la meme epoque que SamirAmin, influenceparl'ecole d6pendantiste latino-americaine,integre deux des principalesprobl6matiquess'affirmantau sein des milieux intellectuelsprogressistes:celle des modes de productionet celle du d6veloppement inegal et dependant(Amin 1970, 1972, 1973). La fin des annees 60 se clot, en France, sur une conjoncturepolitico-intellectuelle favorable a la diffusion des problematiquestheoriqueset des principauxconceptsde l'anthropologieeconomiquemarxiste.Pourdeux raisonsprincipales.D'abordparceque les chercheursse raccrochanta ce courantde penseerefusentde se laisserenfermerdans une demarcheempiriste. Leurambitionest d'ouvrirdes pistes, de lancerdes questions, de construirede nouveaux concepts, de renouvelerle d6bat. En d'autrestermes, leur ambitionest de produireun nouveausavoir. Or dansle contextepolitico-socialde la fin des annees 60 en France, ce savoir renouveleet reinventecorrespondaux aspirations intellectuellesde nombreuxjeunes chercheursmontants.Pources jeuneschercheurs,les concepts et les problematiquesde l'anthropologieeconomiquemarxistesont extremement seduisants parce qu'ils offrent de nouvelles pistes, parce qu'ils etendent les horizons de la recherche, non seulementen ce qui touche aux societes precapitalistes africainesd'ailleurs, mais en ce qui concernele mouvementhistoriquede longuedur~e du capitalisme.Parailleurs,a la fin des annees60, l'anthropologieeconomiquemarxiste n'est plus seulementun courantde pensee auquelse raccrochent,parles probl6matiques et les concepts qu'ils privilegient, un certain nombre de chercheurs. Elle est un mouvement intellectuel (donc par certains aspects aussi une mode intellectuelle)qui opere a la fois dans le champacademiqueet dans le champsocio-politique.A la fin des annees 60, l'anthropologieeconomiquemarxiste,les conceptset les problematiquesqui ' lui donnent un coutenu specifique, sont, ni plus ni moins, apparent6s de nouvelles armes de contestationcontrel'idealisme bourgeoiset contrel'imperialisme(Rey 1973, 1976;Terray 1984a). 2. Les annees 70: apogee des etudesmeneesen termede mode de production Au debutdes annees 70, l'anthropologieeconomiquemarxistes'affirmede plus en plus dans la productiondes concepts normatifsa partirdesquels est entreprisel'6tude des formations sociales africaines. Si, jusque-la, la reflexion s'etait appuyee sur des recherchesde terrainencorefraiches,le debatquis'amorceversles annees 1972-73tend, de plus en plus, a s'enforcerdans la theoriecirculaire,dansla dialectiquedes concepts. Le systemedes conceptsdecouvertparMarx(Althusserne vient-il pas de le rappelerdansun Avertissementcelebre?)(1969) ouvreni plus ni moins le continent histoire 'a la connaissance scientifique. C'est la periode oui, comme le rappelle pertinemment G. Dupre dans ce volume, les anthropologuesmarxistes s'occupent de tirer les prolongementstheoriquesde leurs ecrits anterieurs.P.P Rey aboutit ainsi, pour caracteriserles rapportsde dependanceet d'autoritese deployantau sein des societes qu'il etudie, au conceptd'exploitation(Rey 1973, 1975, 1977). De son c6te, C. Meillassoux produittout un ensemblede textes oii il s'emploiea schematiserle mode de fontionnement des societes d'autosubsistance(Meillassoux 1972, 1973, 1975d). Enfin, E. Terrays'interrogesur le processusd'emergencede l'Etatau sein des societes precapitalistes,et sur la naturedes classes qui s'y reproduisent(Terray1974, 1975, 1977, 1978). Au milieu des annees 70, I'anthropologieeconomiquemarxisteaccroitconsiderablement son audience, son influence et sa credibilite internationales.Plusieursde ses principauxporte-parolessont invites dansles universitesetrangeres.D'autressiegentau sein des comites de publicationde periodiquesinfluents,sontresponsablesde collections d'ouvrages, ou publientregulierementdansles pages duMonde.Enfin, plusieursvoient leurs ouvrages traduitsen anglais. Autantd'indicateurs,pourreprendreune expression de Bourdieu(1984), "de capitalde pouvoiret de prestigescientifique".Mais il y a plus: pour de nombreux jeunes chercheurs (qui ne sont qu'indirectementinteresses par l'anthropologieet par l'Afrique), Rey, Terrayet Meillassouxincarnentla nouveaute,le changement,la remise en question,la critiquefine. Un espece de processusd'identification mecanique semble s'etablir entre les problematiquesde l'anthropologie6conomique, leurs auteurs, le systeme conceptuelsur lequel ils s'appuient,et la remise en cause d'un ordre politico-intellectuelexistant (qu'on avait alors l'habituded'appeler bourgeois). Par ailleurs, les ouvragesd'un Leclerc (1972), d'un Copans(1974, 1975), qui s'emploient a faire ressortir les liens unissant l'anthropologieappliquee et la domination imperialiste, accentuentencore l'impact social des travauxde l'anthropologie economique marxiste qui, on le sait, se placent resolumentdans la perspective d'une denonciationde l'ordrenio-colonial (Rey 1973, 1976). Au milieudes annees70, le champd'etudeet les preoccupationsg6neralesde l'anthropologieeconomiquene sont plus seulement l'Afrique, les societes precapitalistes,et la critique de l'ethnologie fonctionnalisteet structuraliste.Ce champd'etude, ces preoccupationsgenerales, sont d'un autreordre:la mise au point de problematiquesuniverselles,la productiond'une nouvelle science sociale, la constructiond'une societ6 differente, dans les pays du Tiers-Monde en particulier. C'est dans ce contexte general, qui d6bordelargement l'aspect simplementmethodologiqueet scientifiquede concepts,quetendenta s'affirmer les etudes menees en termede mode de production. L'impact des travauxde l'anthropologie6conomiquemarxiste,et de ses principales probl6matiques,se fait d'abordsentiren Grande-Bretagne,grace ~a 'audienceque leur accordentplusieurspbriodiques(Economyand Society;TheJournalof PeasantStudies; The Journal of ContemporaryAsia; New Left Review; Critiqueof Anthropology),et grace aussi aux essais fortremarques(et for contestes)de B. Hindesset P.Q. Hirst(1975, 1977). Au Canada,les travauxde l'anthropologieeconomiquemarxistesontamplement cites; les ouvragesde Rey, Terray,Meillassoux,Godelier,Copans(pourne nommerque les plus connus) apparaissentsystematiquementdans les bibliographiesde cours. Sahlins(1972), E. Wolf (1982) et S. Diamond(1979) pourn'en nommerquetrois, accordentunegrandeattentionauxtravaux produitsparce courantde pensee. Les ecritsde K. Gough(1968), quirejoignentceux de J. Copans, ont par ailleurs l'avantagede porterle debat~ niveauqui derange:celui du politique. Enfin, le lancementde trois periodiquesvoues a la diffusion du marxisme (Dialectical Anthropology, The Insurgent Sociologist, Ufahamu) a pour effet de catalyserde nombreuxeffortsisoles et de relancer,auxEtats-Unis,le d6batsurles modes de productionet sur la d6pendanceeconomiquedu Tiers-Monde. Jusqu'a la fin des ann6es 70, les 6tudes men6es en terme de mode de production continuent sur leur lancee, bien qu'elles commencenta subir les effets de la crise generale du marxisme ou, pour etre plus pr6cis, de la crise generaledes paradigmes althusseriens.Graduellement,elles tendenta se regenerera partirde nouvellesetudesde terrain.Le debatn'est plus seulementth6orique:il s'alimentea un nombreconsiderable d'etudes empiriques. Cette situation influe 6normementsur l'int6ret accordee a la problematiquedes modes de productiontelle qu'elle s'etait jusque-lad6veloppee. En effet, ces etudes empiriques entrainent,dans bien des cas, la remise en cause des hypotheses, des conclusions et de certaines formulationshatives auxquellesetaient parvenus, dans la premiere moitie des annees 70, les pionniers de l'anthropologie economique marxiste en Afrique. A la longue, ces etudes empiriquesdemontrent l'inadequation des concepts normatifset l'ambiguite des methodes d6veloppeespar l'anthropologieeconomique marxiste. A la longue aussi, ces etudes ont poureffet de soustrairela problematiquedes modes de productionde ses paradigmesalthusseriens. Paradoxalementtoutefois, au lieu de contribueria relancerle d6bat sur les modes de les tres nombreusesrecherchesempiriquesde la fin des annees70 tendent production, ' plutot le faire s'enliser dansune infinitedu nuances,de cas d'especeset de subtilit6sde genres qui ne donnent lieu i aucun nouvel effort de theorisation.Les conditionssont d'ores et deja*posees pourque les conceptsdevelopp6sparl'anthropologieeconomique marxistesoient utilises pourdesignerdes r6alitesextremementdiverses,n'evoluentplus dans leur contenu, perdent leur capacite analytique, et s'apparententa de simples instrumentsde classement(Terray1984a). Les conditionssontegalementd'ores et deja* posees pour qu'un debat intense et passionne redevienne, seulement, d6bat feutre d'academiciensspecialisteset, de ce fait, perdetoutesa vitalite. 3. Le declin de la problematiquedes modesde production Au debutdes annees 80, l'anthropologieeconomiquemarxisteest en crise. La reflexion theoriquede ses plus brillantspenseursparaitepuisee. A quoi attribuercette crise et cet essoufflement?Plusieursfacteursentrentici en jeu. Quatresautentimmediatementaux yeux: 1) l'etiolement, depuis le milieu des annees70, de la conjoncturepolitico-intellectuelle ayant favorise l'essor et la diffusion rapide,dans certainsmilieux, de la problematique des modes de production; 2) la disparitionet le retraitde certainsdes plusbrillantspenseursducourantalthusserien (et l'on sait a quel point la r6flexionsur les modes de productiona ete nourrieparla lecturealthusseriennedes oeuvresde Marx); 145 This content downloaded on Wed, 6 Feb 2013 14:48:32 PM All use subject to JSTOR Terms and Conditions 3) la configuration actuelle des rapportsde forces au sein du milieu universitaire parisien, et la difficultepourles chefs de file de l'anthropologieeconomiquemarxiste de se positionneravantageusementau sein de la rechercheinstitutionnalisee frangaise (Kahnand Llobera 1981, 285); 4) la retraitegenerale des chercheurs,et particulierementdes jeunes chercheurs,vers l'univers rassurant et securisant du factuel (reification et fetichisation de l'empirisme). En fait, I'actuelleremise en cause des etudesmeneesen termede mode de production n'est pas seulement liee a la pertinencetheoriqueet methodologiquedu concept. Elle trouve egalement son origine dans l'apparitiond'une conjoncturepolitiqueou predominentles courantsconservateurset utilitaristes,dansla crise d'unmodehistoriquement date de constructiondu savoir(primautedu savoirtheoriquesurle savoirempirique),et dans la difficulte pourles anthropologuesmarxistesd'imposerleursystemenormatifde pensee (ou leur hegemonie conceptuelle) aux etudes et problematiquesempiriques enoncees et developpees par les jeunes chercheursmontants.Le concept de mode de production,et les problematiquesqui en decoulent,ont certes acquisune audiencedans les milieux academiquesparcequ'ils ontenormementstimuleet ajouteiala reflexionsur les societes precapitalistes.Mais, et ceci est important,ils ontegalementbeneficied'une diffusion assez largedanscertainsmilieuxlies iala rechercheparcequ'ils onte6t associes a un vaste mouvement intellectuel incarnant,dans son discours et ses pratiques,la critique et la volonte de changement.Dans la conjonctureactuelle, ce discourset ces pratiquessont precisementdates. Fauted'etre renouvele,fauted'etreremodelepardes successeurs desireux de reconstruiretheoriquementla problematiquedes modes de production, le debat amorce et transportependant un temps par l'anthropologie economique marxistes'est dilue en eclatantsous les feux nourrisde la critiqueempiriste, et en s'enfermant dans la circularitedes reseaux universitaires.Dans la conjoncture actuelle, le conceptde mode de productionet les problematiques quien decoulentattirent peu parcequ'il ne serventen fait qu' alimenterun ensemblede recherchesbienmenees, impeccables du point de vue methodologique,et collees aux singularitesdes situations. Mais de debat theorique,de renouvellementdes concepts, de productiond'un nouveau savoir, il n'y a pratiquementplus trace. Evidemment, si la conjoncturepolitico-intellectuellepredominantactuellementen France et si la soumission des problematiquesde l'anthropologieeconomiquemarxiste aux paradigmesde l'empirismeet de l'ecclectisme expliquenten partiela desaffection des chercheurs envers les etudes menees en terme de mode de production,elles ne sauraienttoutefois constituerles seuls facteurs.La principaleet la plus immediatedes raisons doit etre rechercheedansce que G. Dupre(dansce volume)et E. Terray(1984a) appellent la reduction, I'appauvrissementet la banalisationde la problematiquedes modes de production.Au coursdes annees70, plusieurstravauxutilisantcetteproblematique avaient d'abordet avanttout trouveleur aboutissementdans le discoursdeductif, c'est-a-dire dansl'explicitationde conclusionsdejacontenuesdansdes axiomesposees a priori. Comme mouvementintellectuel, ce que fut l'anthropologieeconomiquemarxisteau coursdes annees70 a probablementatteintses limites. Et, dans les cadrestracesparce mouvementintellectuel,le conceptde mode de productiona, lui aussi, probablementatteintles siennes. Pourrebondir,pourredevenir aussi stimulantesqu'elles le furentau coursdes annees70, les etudesmeneesen termede mode de productionne devrontpas seulement,commeplusieursle pretendent,prendrela forme d'analyses empiriquesserrees.
