Sokmean Nou, 21, Bachelor of Business Administration (Trilingual Program), HEC Montréal W Sokmean Nou AIESEC HEC http://www.aiesec.ca/hec “we are leaders of today and that is what makes us society’s greatest asset” Sokmean Nou was VicePresident of Corporate Relations at AIESEC HEC during 2008 and travelled to Singapore, Thailand and Ecuador to train AIESEC members and facilitate conferences. e, the youths, are often referred to as “leaders of tomorrow”. But let’s face it. Leadership is not about position, title, or years of experience. Leaving aside the ethical aspect, leadership is in essence about influence and one’s ability of obtaining followers (Maxwell). While some of us are lucky enough to have innate leadership skills, there is no doubt that all of us must acquire and continuously fine tune these skills. Leadership is a journey that starts now, not an absolute stage one obtains after graduation and several years of experience. In other words, we are “leaders of today” and that is what makes us society’s greatest asset. Two years ago, I have taken my first step into this journey of thousand miles that has defined and will continue to shape me as an individual, and more importantly, as an agent of change. This first step comprises of six letters that meant nothing at first, but an entire world of opportunities afterward. These letters are A, I, E, S, E, and C. AIESEC is the world’s largest student-run organization, spanning across five continents and operating from over 1,700 universities located in 107 countries. AIESEC facilitates over 5,000 global exchanges and internships every year and runs countless seminars, workshops, and conferences. In the early stage of introduction to the organization, I was thrown into Corporate Relations department. With no previous experience in Bulletin №1 sales or marketing, I was already challenged to make countless cold calls, to attend several networking events and to engage into numerous sales meeting with various organizations and businesses. Having gained the contagious drive senior members of AIESEC have exuded, I further challenged myself and took the lead of the sales team, training and supporting roughly 20 account managers. Constantly challenged to develop myself and to enable others, I grew my potential and made things I once thought impossible happen sooner that I dared imagine. After meeting very inspiring individuals at my first AIESEC conference in Canada, I decided it was time for to create a story of my own and so I applied to AIESEC Canada Summer CEED Program. CEED is an acronym that stands for Cultural Envoy for Exchange Development. In plain English, it means that the participants of the program would travel to a developing country and support the local AIESEC committee while discovering a new culture. Sponsored by the Canadian International Development Agency, I flew to Ecuador. It was truly an eye-opening experience as I witnessed poverty first hand, embraced the Latin culture and discovered the adventurer in me while traveling the country from large cities like Quito and Guayaquil to cultural heritage cities like Vilcabamba and Catamayo and amazing seashores like Manta and Montañitas. Through various training sessions on Sales, Communications, Talent Acquisition and Retention that I delivered in Spanish and the daily conversations I had, I improved my fluency in Spanish and boosted substantially my confidence. But the most valuable thing I have gained is the feeling of achievement, of having made an impact. When I see the sparks in the eyes of the students I have met and empowered to pursue their dreams and ambitions and when, a year later, I see the achievements they have made, I truly understand the extent to which small actions can have a positive impact in others’ lives. My journey has certainly not stopped there, and there is simply so much more I can tell you. But leadership is not about looking deeply into the past or trying to replicate it. It’s about visioning where our next step will land us and take the right actions to make it happen. AIESEC has given me the courage to grab onto opportunities and to have a positive impact, today. Remember this quote by Gandhi: “Be the change you want to see in the World”. I hereby invite all of us, youths, leaders of today, and sole responsible of what tomorrow will be, to dare unlearn and relearn and to have the courage to lead the change we want to see in the world.
