Linguistic means are discussed investigating the content of diplomatic texts. Studying the subject French and the EU institutions, history of French diplomacy are analysed, a lot of attention is devoted to cultural diplomacy and francophonie, French attitude to globalisation phenomena. Short course annotation in French L’objet principal de cet enseignement est d’une part de présenter les spécificités lexicales et fonctionnelles du français de la diplomatie et d’autre part de donner un aperçu de l’organisation politique et institutionnelle de la France et de l’Union européenne. S’y ajoute en complément la description du cadre international, particulièrement la question des pratiques diplomatiques, des spécificités de la diplomatie culturelle et des organisations internationales. Dans tous les cas, les contenus et leur expression en français sont abordés en parallèle. Prerequisites for entering the course French Language Level B1. Course content (topics) Tradition of Republic of France diplomacy. General features of institutions. Institutions: legislation bodies (National assembly and the Senate), executive bodies (president, government), courts (Constitutional Court). Parties and governmental organisations (NGOs, trade unions, organisations of industrialists, the church, press and mass media). State offices. International relations. Diplomacy principles. French diplomatic and defence politics. French cultural diplomacy and francophone organisations. International organisations: UNO, European Council, ESBO, G7/G20. The European Union. History. Institutions: the European Council, European Commission, European Parliament, European Community Court of Justice. General European politics and globalisation. Subject specific and linguistic analysis of presentations as well as other texts on the topics of political science and diplomacy. Peculiarities of diplomatic language oral and written communication, specificity of terms. Manifestations of cultural diplomacy. Study (teaching and learning) methods Teaching methods: explanation, document commenting, moderation. Learning methods: analysis of articles and other documents, listening to recordings, lexical practical work, presentation preparation, discussion. Methods of learning achievement assessment Testing, observation, analysis of written work. Distribution of workload for students (contact and independent work hours) Lectures – 30 hours, practical activities – 15 hours, independent student’s work (including– preparation colloquium and examination) – 80 hours. Structure of cumulative score and value of its constituent parts Colloquium – 25%, presentations/tests – 25%, examination – 50%.
