DR. FRASER N. GURD Dr. Fraser Gurd (1914-1995) Dr. Fraser Gurd graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University in 1939. He succeeded Dr. H. Rocke Robertson as Chairman of the Department of Surgery, McGill University in 1962. Throughout his career, Dr. Gurd demonstrated a remarkable interest in research with several significant investigations into the treatment of shock and trauma. Perhaps his greatest contribution relates to the development of surgical scientists. Dr. Gurd has received many honours including the Royal College's Duncan Graham Award for outstanding service in medical education. He was an Emeritus Professor of Surgery at McGill University. The presentations by the residents and fellows are a tribute to the many contributions of Dr. Fraser Gurd. CHRISTOPHER ELLISON, MD is the Ohio State University College Distinguished Professor & Robert M. Zollinger Chairman, of Medicine Distinguished ProfesDepartment of Surgery sor and the Robert M. Zollinger CEO, Faculty Group Practice Vice Dean, Clinical Affairs Chairman of the Department of Ohio State University College of Medicine Surgery. He also serves as the CEO of the Faculty Group Practice and Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs of the College of Medicine. He is a practicing general surgeon in an academic setting. A Columbus, Ohio native, Dr. Ellison received his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1972 and his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1976. He returned to Columbus for general surgery residency at Ohio State. Dr. Ellison then joined the university in 1984 as assistant professor. In 2000 he was named as Chair of the Department Surgery. His research interests include pancreatic disease, hepatic cancer, wound healing, Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, surgical education and work force issues. He has published over 100 peer reviewed articles. He is co-author of Williams TE, Satiani B, Ellison EC. 2009. The coming shortage of surgeons: why they are disappearing and what that means for our health. In addition he is co-author with Robert M. Zollinger Jr of the 9th Edition of Zollinger’s Atlas of Surgical Operations which was published in the fall of 2010. Dr. Ellison is past president of the Ohio Chapter and governor-at-large of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and currently serves as the Chair of ACS Advisory Council for General Surgery. He is also a past President of the Central Surgical Association and past Vice President of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons. He also serves on the editorial board of the American Journal of Surgery and as a Deputy Editor for the Journal of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Ellison served as a Director of American Board of Surgery as a representative of the ACS from 2003-2011 and the American Board of Colorectal Surgery from 2005-2011. He served as Vice Chair of the American Board of Surgery in 2009-2010 and as Chair of the ABS in 2010-2011. He also serves as the Secretary of the American Surgical Association, Treasurer of the James IV Association of Surgeons and is President of The Society of Surgical Chairs (2011-2012).
