OBJECTIFS
'A poem is when it rhymes'? The literary expedition envisaged for this course will take us
once across the lyric landscape of the twentieth century and give us an opportunity to test
this age-old commonplace. Starting with Thomas Hardy and William Butler Yeats we will
read our way through the B.A. reading list right down to Ted Hughes and Seamus Heaney.
The different stations of this journey will allow us to trace the development of modern poetry
and its changes in form, rhythm and content in the past century.
This seminar is addressed to B.A. students in their second and third year and its aim is
twofold. On the one hand, you will get an overview of the most important poets and their
work in this period, so that you will be able to recognise and discuss their particular concerns
and stylistic idiosyncrasies. On the other, you will learn how to analyse poems from a
scientific point of view and get an opportunity practice your analytical skills. We will examine
how the form of individual poems may influence their meaning and how much we have to
know about the context or the tradition in which a poem was written in order to fully
appreciate the intentions of its author. By the end of term you will be able to analyse similar
poems on your own without the help of any secondary, interpretative literature in a wellstructured essay.
ÉVALUATION
2 travaux écrits courts à rendre aux dates suivantes :
Le premier travail écrit doit être rendu le mardi 2 mai 2006 et sera rendu et discuté la
semaine suivante.
Le second travail écrit doit être rendu le vendredi 30 juin 2006 et sera rendu d’ici au 15 juillet
2006.
Ces travaux seront évalué selon les critères en vigueur à l’Institut de langue et littérature
anglaises, qui peuvent être consultés à la page :

La note finale sera la moyenne des notes obtenues aux deux travaux écrits. La participation
de l’étudiant au travail en commun en classe pourra être en prise en considération, si
nécessaire, pour arrondir une moyenne.
Ce séminaire peut faire partie des modules suivants (consulter le plan d’études) : PP7, PS4
et PP8.
