The House of Gold And Bones ! The House of Gold And Bones, part 1 ? Last of The Real », tu sonnes vraiment énervé ! Publié par Rock'N'Balls sur www.rocknballs.com | Tous droits réservés Sovereign is a weak word Stone Sour would probably never existed without Slipknot's huge international succes. Yet, the side project of Corey Taylor and James Root succeeded, with years, to take advantage of its situation to build itself up a slid reputation and a fanbase as faithful as the maggots have been since the release of Slipknot in 1999. With the mixed success of Audio Secrecy two years ago, the band from Des Moines had to quickly go back to work, and it's been really surprising for us to recently heard that the successor would in fact be a double concept album entitled The House of Gold And Bones! Released last October, the first part of this diptych revealed itself as a total success, with a shorter but more compact setlist than for the previous albums, and above all an important common thread in the form of a short novel the frontman Corey Taylor personnaly wrote! Until the much coveted Part 2 comes out, we had the opportunity to interview Mr Corey Taylor when Stone Sour came to Belgium some weeks ago, and it's an revelation interview! Conversation with Corey Taylor (vocals) Interview and editing by Sponge Publié par Rock'N'Balls sur www.rocknballs.com | Tous droits réservés Sponge (Rock'N'Balls): So Corey, in what state of mind are you since the release of your new record called The House of Gold And Bones, part 1? The records sells seem to go very well, so... happy? Corey Taylor: It feels good, man, it feels really fucking good! The fans are really digging the new album, and they're really excited for Part 2! So to me, we're on to something. I mean, all the shows have been sold out, the reaction to the new material is just fantastic, so I'm fucking exstatic, you know. Really happy! S: As this new record is a concept album, and is closely connected to a short novel you personaly wrote, can you tell us how this idea came to you, and how you decided to realize it? Corey: It was an idea I had for a few years, to be honest. It was one of those things like, just a nugget, just a little bit of an idea. I tried to flesh it out here and there, 'cause I already had the idea before we did Audio Secrecy. And then certain things happened, like you know... we lost Paul [note: Gray, Slipknot's bassist], then Roy [note: Mayorga, drums] had a stroke, and I just kinda got away from it, I really didn't even think about it for a long time. And it wasn't before we were out with Slipknot doing the Sonisphere tour after Paul died, I think we were in Switzerland... [The door's opening, and Roy Mayorga is standing in front of us with all his hair up in the air, with tons of hair spray, and a really crazy face!] Corey: ...... you see what I deal with?! ......... oh man!......... (laughs). So, we were in Switzerland, and for some reason, I saw it! Like the whole thing! And that's when I sat down and I came up with « Gone Sovereign », with « Rumor of Skin », I came up with almost all the songs that I brought in for this project. And soon when we got home, I went in like demoed all these shit, and I basically kinda took the guys aside, like one by one I said « I got this idea, and I think it could be fucking perfect! », and then I played them the music, and they really loved it. And the rest is history... S: Can you tell us in some words what's the story happening to the main character of this story? And is this novel kind of autobiographic? Corey: A little bit. I mean, it's very fictionnal, but the main character, the human, is made of little bits of me and people I know, people I've grown up with, or people I've just known in my life, and you know... that's about that internal struggle, I really wanted to make sure that people feel it believable, I wanted people to relate to it, so I knew I was gonna have to infuse it with a little bit of reality, I couldn't just go in with like this character and say « Ok, and all this shit happens! », you know... I had to make it so people can identify with it in a way. But then the antagonists and the protagonists, I really wanted to make sure they felt like there's something about them that was very extreme, as gnarly as Allen is, and as empathetic and enigmatic. So I really took pieces from people that I've known in my life, and I tried to make it as wonderful as possible, I guess. S: How did you deal with the writing process of this new record as you knew that the songs had to be connected with the story? Has it been something difficult for you? Or maybe you composed the music before writing the novel? Publié par Rock'N'Balls sur www.rocknballs.com | Tous droits réservés Corey: I wrote the music before I fleshed it out. I mean, I had the idea, I had the story in mind, I kinda knew where I wanted it to go, like I could see it as a whole, but I hadn't written it down. But the ideas let me to write the music, and I really started to write the music that encouraged me to sit down and write the story. I only did one round of revision, where I took some stuff away, so I finished it essentially while we were in the studio, and I gave it to everyone like « This is it, this is the story, this is how I feel it! ». And they really really got it, at that time, we were really able to establish that crazy narrative in the songs, you know, where the different themes come back and then each character has a different voice, and that was a lot of fun! Being able to record with different microphones to give each character like a different voice, that was a lot of fucking fun! « We were in Switzerland, and for some reason, I saw it! Like the whole thing! And that's when I sat down and I came up with « Gone Sovereign », with « Rumor of Skin », I came up with almost all the songs that I brought in for this project. » (Corey Taylor) S: Stone Sour used to write long records, containing between 13 and 18 songs each. So why did you choose to release two records instead of only once this time? Was it to give even more interest by expectation to this concept? Corey: Maybe a little bit, yeah, I mean... it's one of those things where we were sure, when we were doing the demos, that the more music kinda came in, and the more we would able to figure out when we sat back, we were just like « Oh fuck, we got 24 songs! », it was insane! And we ended up really recording 23. But it just took that many, you know, we had so much great material that we didn't want to abandon anything! We knew that we were gonna do something this grand, and this big, that we wanted to go like fucking « All or nothing! », just to put it out there, and see what happens. And that's what was awesome about it, and I knew there was a break in the short story where I could kinda split it in half and really make it walk that way. So it just made sense, you know, we didn't set out to do it like that, but at the same time, we knew that if we did it like this, it would be much more of an event for the fans! S: Your records always contain heavy songs but also some quiet ones, and this time you didn't go against the rule, as you've probably wrote some of your best ballads, I think about « The Travelers, part 1 » and above all « Taciturn », which is my personal favorite song on this album! Is it something important for you, personaly, to always put these two musical aspects on your Stone Sour records? Is it essential for the good balance of your music? Corey: I think so, yeah. We always felt that without the slower stuff, our heavy stuff can't breath! Because some of those slower tunes could be just as heavy, you know, from a completely different point. So to me, the lighter stuff accentuates the heavy stuff, and then vice versa, you come out of a heavy tune and boom! You break it way down, I think it heightens the drama, it heightens the experience! And I now we've got a lot of shits over the years for doing that, but it's like « Fuck You, it's us! », you know... It's what we do! And I think especially for this new record, it's the strongest songwriting we've ever had, to me it's clearly our best materiel yet. Publié par Rock'N'Balls sur www.rocknballs.com | Tous droits réservés S: From one extreme to another, you've personaly recorded your heaviest Stone Sour vocals on this album, for example, on songs like « RU486 » and « Last of The Real », you really sound pissed! Why did you choose to move closer to what you do in Slipknot on these tracks? Corey: It makes sense for the characters. And that's really what came down, 'cause I've always kinda tiptoed in and out of the heavy, but I've always made sure that that melody was there. With « RU486 », it was essential for the character that is very anchored in the story, and I knew I can do that, I think people know I can do that kind of voice! (laughs) So it was fun, you know, especially that song, 'cause I remember Josh on that one brought the music in, and we lined it up and we were like « Hoooly shit! This is fucking awesome! » you know. So I really wanted to go for that side that we really don't have, but we touched on it, with songs like « 30/30-150 » or a song like « Get Inside », but I didn't have a real thrash tune. And that's kinda where me and Josh, and Jim... you know, we grew up in that scene, so we kinda wanted to tip our hat to that, and put our own spin on it, and it came out fantastic. S: You've recently published two videos for the songs « Gone Sovereign » and « Absolute Zero », which are the first two songs on this new record. So did you ever think about making a video for each song of this concept album? Is this something you'd like to do? Corey: Yeah, we thought about that. It was one of those things where I was like « Yeah that would be pretty cool. », but I took it a step further, and I'm thinking about two movies! And that's something that we'll probably do like later, 'cause we've really got a lot of plans for the next two years, the next year it's gonna be a lot of touring, especially when Part 2 comes out, and then doing the festivals over here, then kinda come back and tour the States again... but in 2014, it's gonna be very very special, 'cause that's essentially us setting up a world tour where we do two nights in one city, and we play Part 1 the first night, the second night we play Part 2, with a very cool stage show, like it's very involved, very thought-provoking, so we're working on that right now and it's really cool, then we're gonna film it to put together this very comprehensive DVD set! And after that, Jim and me will go back to Slipknot, where we'll start to kinda feel the bones there, and while doing that, I want to film both movies at the same time, I think it's gonna be really really cool. « To me, the lighter stuff accentuates the heavy stuff, and then vice versa, you come out of a heavy tune and boom! You break it way down, I think it heightens the drama, it heightens the experience! And I now we've got a lot of shits over the years for doing that, but it's like “Fuck You, it's us!”, you know... It's what we do! » (Corey Taylor) S: The House of Gold & Bones will also be released as a four-issue comic book in 2013, so will these comic books be an adapation of the story, or will it be the next episodes of this story?! Corey: Yeah, the first issue will come out on April 17, and it's the adaptation of the short story, it's its visual representation. And it's been cool to work on the script, and Dark Horse, the company I've been working with on that project, they've been really good at it, they really helped me 'cause I've never done that before! It's a really interesting process, harder that I thought it was gonna be, 'cause you really have to give the artist a lot work with, you know, 'cause he can only go as far as he sees it, so he wants to know how you see it! It's Publié par Rock'N'Balls sur www.rocknballs.com | Tous droits réservés been really cool, and it's just one more step in the process of getting to the movies, 'cause we got the music which is the musical side of it, then we got the story which is the litteral side of it, then we'll get the comics which is the visual side of it, so between those three aspects, we'll be able to get two really good scripts together, and create something that no one hopefully has ever seen before. S: And could you tell us who you would like to have as a director for this movie? Or maybe it could be Corey Taylor's beginnings as a movie director, as you recently launched your own movie production company called Living, Breathing Films! What about that? Corey: Oh no, I'm no director! I can produce all that, but I know the people who I wanna work with, and it's just a matter of sitting down and figure it out, you know, 'cause you want somebody who's gonna get it! 'cause there's gonna be times when I can't be there, so I want people that do get it, to be able to fucking see it and help me run with it. I have the right team in mind, and I think it's gonna be really fucking cool. S: Well thanks a lot for this cool interview, Corey! Do you have a last word for your fans and our readers here in Belgium and everywhere else? Corey: Yeah, thanks a lot for your time, for your support, and stay tuned for Part 2, guys!
