Inquiry Based Learning Rich Task on la… According to the Alberta education system: “Inquiry-based learning is a complex process where students formulate questions, investigate to find answers, build new understandings, meanings and knowledge, and then communicate their big learnings to others.” But what does this actually mean? Comfort level: 100% Here is a pretty standard assignment: Research arts and culture in French Polynesia VS. IBL assignment: You have a country, pick your own question based on given themes. Comfort level…. Gone This is, by far, the most difficult but intriguing part of the IBL process. You are in control of creating the question! For example, if I still wanted to look into arts and culture in French Polynesia, I might ask the following question: How did Gauguin, a French painter, influence French Polynesian art? The IBL process generally unfolds in the following steps. You are more than welcome to use these questions to guide your own process: 1. Planning: Identify a topic area for inquiry, possible information sources, your target audience. Our resource teacher librarian is a valuable resource to consult if you need help narrowing down a question. Please note that you will need to compare your country to CANADA. I know that I want to look into Gaguin’s influence on French Polynesian art. I’ll largely use the internet, but I’ll check out the various resources in the library (periodicals, encyclopedias, books). My audience will by my classmates, my teacher and other students of various levels. 2. Retrieving: Develop an information retrieval plan (how are you going to locate & collect your resources?) Select relevant information, evaluate it, review and revise your IBL question. I’m going to go on Monday to the library to check out their resources. If I don’t find anything there, I’ll try my public library. I’ll also be able to use the internet at home. Instead of just focusing on information about French Polynesia, I might need to grab some resources on Gauguin. Once I have my sources, I’ll need to pick out the most relevant information to make sure it fits with my question. 3. Processing: Record your information and HOLD ON TO IT! This is part of your process mark! During class time, conference with us and engage in peer editing to make sure you are on the right track. Now is an excellent time to make your required MLA bibliography, which you will need to print out. Please see the notes provided by our teacher librarian for proper formatting. Make connections and inferences. I’ve compiled all of my information in a word doc. and started my bibliography. It’s starting to seem as though Tahiti had more of an influence on Gauguin than he did on their culture… 4. Creating: Organize your information into a digital presentation. A variety of media forms are recommended to enhance your presentation (ie- videos, music, charts, graphs, pictures, links, etc.) I’m going to use PowerPoint 5. Sharing: Present your findings and any new conclusions that you have arrived at. Please respect the following maximum time limits! Grade 9: 5 minutes Grade 10: 6 minutes + 2 minute activity Grade 11: 7 minutes Grade 12: 8 minutes + 5 minute activity Attached, you will find the rubric and possible themes to choose from, based on your grade level. PLEASE PRINT THE RUBRIC FOR US TO GRADE YOU! There are two on 1 page, so you can share with someone.
