PROGRAMME COMPLET
Matinée - Accueil de 8h00 à 8h30 (Réservé aux membres)

Temperament Tests for Sheltered Dogs (Dre Bennett)
Temperament tests, or behavior assessments, are tools that have been used
extensively in shelter settings in an attempt to predict behavior in dogs prior to
adoption. Even though widely used, there is a paucity of evidence in the
veterinary literature about their validity, predictability, and reliability. Those that
have been rigorously tested may not be feasible in a shelter setting with limited
time, resources and manpower. Additionally, standardized application of these
tests is lacking in most settings.
This lecture will explore the definition of temperament- a necessity if it is to be
measured accurately. The utility of several test formats and measuring tools will
be discussed. The requirements for an accurate and practical test, including
validity, reliability, standardization, and feasibility will be explored.
Recommendations on how to utilize the information collected from these testing
modalities will be covered.
14:30 Breed Specific Legislation (Dre Bennett)
Breed specific legislation is policy implemented in many parts of the world in an
attempt to limit or eliminate dogs that are perceived to be part of a breed
considered to be “inherently aggressive” or “dangerous” in an attempt to protect
public safety. There are challenges to implementing and enforcing these laws,
with accurate identification of specified breeds or mixes, being at the
forefront. Additionally, they do not effectively address the motivation underlying
most dog bites and perpetuation stereotypes and prejudices. Scientific data
indicating the lack of effectiveness of these forms of legislation will be
discussed. The lecture will conclude with some recommendations on how to
responsibly manage aggression in dogs from public policy standpoint.
15:30 Distinguishing Feline Behaviors in Shelters- Stressed, Fearful or Feral? (Dre
Bennett)
Attendees will learn about stress in sheltered cats, including sources, presentations
and the physical and behavioral effects of stress in the cat. Current tools available
to try to differentiate between stressed and fearful cats versus truly feral cats will
be introduced.
