FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Version française plus bas) Centaur Theatre’s Wildside Theatre Festival Leaps into 2016 with Audacity, Laughter and Music MONTREAL, December 15, 2015 - From January 7 to 17, 2016 Centaur Theatre takes its annual th walk on the wild side with the 19 edition the WILDSIDE FESTIVAL, a 10-day extravaganza of boundary-breaking theatre that consistently lives up to its unofficial title, “the hottest 10 days of winter!” With a keen eye for the new and unusual, Executive and Artistic Director, Roy Surette, and local playwright and actor, Johanna Nutter (My Pregnant Brother), have co-curated a program ranging from a large cast superhero musical to an intimate look at a woman living in the shadow of her famous husband. “There’s something for everyone in what I like to call our ‘gateway-intro-to-theatre’ fest”, said Roy Surette. “Dark comedy, witty monologues, evocative movement and more, Wildside is a fun-filled, blast-off into the New Year, our open invitation to the audacious and curious, not to mention a great way to combat the post-holiday blues. And Wildside Superpasses make terrific stocking stuffers!” Included in every Wildside Festival is Centaur Theatre’s Best of the Fringe Festival winner. This summer, Elena Belyea’s comical yet thought-provoking, Miss Katelyn's Grade Threes Prepare for the Inevitable, won the bragging rights that come with the coveted title. The Centaur Jury, having also been transfixed by the lyrical Co. Venture, a slice of the modern dance giant Merce Cunningham’s life in latter days, created by and featuring Pepper Fajans invited it to be part of Wildside. Both artists, from Western Canada and Brooklyn (NY) respectively, were elated to learn of their participation in Centaur’s Season . “We are surprised and particularly honoured to be invited to Wildside. This is the beginning of a most fruitful harmony between Montreal and New York”, said Mr. Fajans. “I feel fortunate to be coming back to Montreal-- I love this city-- to perform at Centaur Theatre”, added Ms. Belyea. “The purpose and spirit of Wildside”, explained Ms. Nutter, “is to bring a broad range of artists together; sharing, experimenting, and discovering each other’s work; to create new connections while presenting audiences with brave work that might not otherwise have a professional platform. It’s a treat for Montrealers, especially those new to Centaur. Why not start the new year off by trying something untamed?” OFFSIDE Now a regular bonus event, OFFSIDE returns for the third consecutive year on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. As soon as the stage lights fade, the Seagram Gallery comes to life with some of Montreal's most underrated and over-the-top performers exposing their wilder sides free of charge! It’s a mash-up of duelling ballerinas, live tarot readings, puppet janitors, and of course, the Friday night tributes where the best of the fest (and surprise guests from the local indie music scene) give us their take on a music icon. This year it’s the always surprising, master of self-reinvention: the prolific and ultra-original David Bowie. ARTSIDE The festival’s walk on the wild side also extends to the walls with the Wildside art exhibition, ARTSIDE. Curated by Steven Smith Simard, the exhibition is open to all forms of the visual arts, exploring the infinite aspects of “wild” to showcase emerging and established artists. Always unconventional and innovative, the show reflects an eclectic array of conceptual investigations that are audacious and captivating. Wildside Theatre Passes offer a discounted price to any four shows in the line-up but they’re very popular and sell out fast. Interested buyers are urged to take advantage of the special quickly. DESCRIPTION DES SPECTACLES CAPTAIN AURORA: A SUPERHERO MUSICAL 75min.
