Nov 26 at 8pm: Caracol (at La Petite Slague). In the winter of 2011, Carole Facal (alias Caracol) hunkered down in her home studio to write the songs that would become her new album “Blanc mercredi” (White Wednesday). Inspired by winter imagery, love poems, paintings and art deco pieces, her French and English lyrics shine through pleasantly rousing arrangements that draw from alternative pop, retro soul and old-time folk. With her band members, Caracol seems to be hosting an intimate family affair, where everyone adds their touch to the proceedings. Fine harmonies are supported by unexpected sounds, produced by various guitars and resonators, a ukulele, vintage amplifiers and all sorts of percussions. The soundscape is unique, modern and gleaming with love… quite the irony for a girl who in earlier days had sworn to have no truck with that topic in her songs! Yet her musings now remind us that life’s beauties and truths are all the more precious when they seem all too rare. Little Montreal, Elgin Street. info : www.laslague.ca , tickets : www.letno.ca le 26 novembre 2011 à 20 h au Little Montreal: Caracol à La Petite Slague. IN DECEMBER Dec 2 to 18 (weekends only): STC presents Beauty and the Beast by Warren Graves (adaptation). Dec 16, 17 and 18: Espanola Little Theatre presents Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol by Tom Mula - presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York. THE STORY: "Marley was dead, to begin with…"—and what happens to Ebenezer Scrooge's mean, sour, pruney old business partner after that? Chained and shackled, Marley is condemned to a hellish eternity. He's even given his own private tormentor: a malicious little hell-sprite who thoroughly enjoys his work. Desperate, Marley accepts his one chance to free himself: To escape his own chains, he must first redeem Scrooge. So begins a journey of laughter and terror, redemption and renewal, during which Scrooge's heart, indeed, is opened; but not before Marley—in this irreverent, funny and deeply moving story—discovers his own. Cambrian College’s recent collaboration with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Alice Cooper has resulted in the establishment of a new scholarship for students in Graphic Design. “Alice’s support was just what we needed,” said Ron Beltrame, coordinator of the Graphic Design program. “We had been fundraising for years through different initiatives, trying to raise enough money to create a self-sustaining scholarship, and now we’ve finally reached our goal.” The legendary rocker performed in Sudbury on May 18, satisfying fans and signing an original painting created by former Cambrian student, Tennille Heinonen. Prints of the painting were sold for $20 each at Sudbury Paint and Custom Framing and at Cambrian College. Everyone who purchased a print was entered into a draw to win the autographed painting. The Alice Cooper print campaign raised more than $2,200, adding to the $3,000 already raised for the scholarship. The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities will match the total amount, bringing the total of the scholarship funds to over $10,000. “Now, we’ve got enough money to award $500 to a deserving student every year,” said Beltrame. “We’re not stopping here. We’re going to continue to fundraise to support our students.” After much anticipation, the winner of the original painting signed by Alice Cooper has been drawn. The winner is Beth Robbins, a 1st-year Graphic Design student, who purchased a print online through the Cambrian Foundation to get in on the draw for the original artwork.
