Henri Mondor (1885 - 1962) was a French physician, historian, and biographer of Mallarmé. It is unusual among his oeuvre because its composition is arranged around a diagonal, rather than along a vertical or longitudinal axis. He created another binding for this book, which was exhibited in New York in 1947. (See Blaizot, Georges. Masterpieces of French modern bindings. New York, , 19 , no. 16, reproduced.) Lucien de Samosate : Loukios ou l'âne Translated by Émile Chambry. With 66 original woodcuts by Henri Laurens, including 23 full-page In a 1952 binding by P. L. Martin (1913-1985) Paris: Tériade, 1947. In an edition of 250 copies, this one printed on vélin d’Arches pur fil. One of the first 40 copies, this example also contains: - An additional suite of all of the illustrations on papier de Chine, signed by the artist. - Four original drawings, signed with the ’ m g m ‘H.L.’. These were designs for woodcuts which were not used in the eventual publication. The first, showing a group of three dogs, is related to the illustration on page 31, in reverse. The second, a male figure seen from behind, was not used in the finished publication, while the third, a reclining woman, varies slightly from the final version (page 78.) The final drawing, a man crowned with a laurel wreath, corresponds to the final woodcut, on page 93. Henri Laurens produced three texts for Tériade, each illustrated with woodcuts, and all by ancient authors. No other works published by Tériade were illustrated in this medium. This, the second of the three, narrates the tale of a man transformed into a donkey by his lover, a s .L ’ g ph y h p y , perfectly reflecting the donk y’ h m . The typography and printing of both text and illustrations, including the typographic ornament in gold-leaf, were executed by Pierre Bouchet. The binding is in citron Levant, inlaid with grey Levant and box calf embellished with gold, with a grey doublure and a black Levant slipcase and chemise. In 1950 Martin also b h B b èq ’ py.
