Mastema (Rock `n Balls): Hi Samoth how are you
Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk est probablement mon album préféré. A bientôt ! Publié par Rock'N'Balls sur www.rocknballs.com | Tous droits réservés Imperial farewell Bitter yet resigned, we’ve come to accept Emperor’s decision to put an end to their career after a small series of reunion gigs, which allowed us to hope for more… The band, one of Norwegian black metal’s true giants, has confirmed its cult status once more by offering us an ultimate gift, Live Inferno, which is definitely a beautiful swansong to a short yet tremendous career. Although very occupied, guitarist and co-founder Samoth has taken some of his free time to answer a couple of our questions. The saddest among you should rejoice: Samoth and Ihsahn definitely haven’t said their last words, but through other musical creations… Conversation with Samoth (guitars) Interview and edition by Mastema Mastema (Rock ‘n Balls): Hi Samoth how are you? A few weeks ago, you released Live Inferno, so my first question is simple : is this record going to be the very last of Emperor, or do you guys have any another goodies in store for the future? Samoth: I’m good, thanks! It looks like this will be the last big release from Emperor, yes. It of course could be that there will be some other collector’s items or something. One never really knows what the future will bring. Publié par Rock'N'Balls sur www.rocknballs.com | Tous droits réservés M: Could you come back to the reasons why you decided to reunite the band for this small series of shows? Samoth: I guess there’s always been a feeling of something being “unfinished”, as we never really got to do those last final shows after we split up the band. The last show we did was a festival headline show in Poland in 1999. The Prometheus… album came out in 2001, but that album was in its entirety a studio project, and even by the time we recorded it we hadn’t really been a fully functional band for a while, and it didn’t really feel right at that time to get back on stage. After the split the Emperor name grew even stronger than ever, and the demand from the fans was huge. In a way I think we owed it to ourselves and to the fans to do this. M: How did you feel when you hit the stage again with Ihsahn for the first time? Was there anything different than before? Samoth: There was a gap of about 6 years between the last show we did after the end of touring “IX Equilibrium” in ’99 until we appeared as the “secret surprise” at the Scream Festival in ’05, where we announced the reunion shows. When we came back we were all on the same page so to say and we were all psyched about these reunion shows, as it felt very right for us and also sort of fresh. I think these feelings were reflected in our performances and general energy around the shows. I would say it was overall a great experience. M: Emperor headlined the Wacken Open Air festival in 2006: what memories do you keep from that performance? Samoth: It felt like it was over very fast, ha ha! It was our biggest show to date and there was a lot of excitement around it. To headline in front of 60.000 people is a very unique experience, especially when you see and hear thousands of people signing along to your songs. A great memory for sure! M: Why did you decide to put the Inferno and the Wacken performances on the record? Samoth: Both were key shows and both were working very well audio wise, so they very obvious choices for us. « This reunion was about ending a chapter, rather than starting a new one really. » (Samoth) M: Of course, lots of fans (including myself, I must admit) were a bit disappointed because, let’s face it, we were all hoping for a reunion after these shows. Was that ever an option (like Immortal, for instance) or was it very clear from the start? Publié par Rock'N'Balls sur www.rocknballs.com | Tous droits réservés Samoth: It’s was clear from the start. This reunion was about ending a chapter, rather than starting a new one really. Sure, some people say they are disappointed, but hey, we came back and did some great shows for the fans. At one point I didn’t even think that would happen. M: Do you ever feel any nostalgia when thinking of Emperor’s glorious days, honestly? Samoth: Sure I do! Emperor has been, and still is a big part of my life. I’m extremely proud of our accomplishments when I think back to how we first started and how we built our entity from nothing in the middle of rural Norway, to becoming an international act and one of the key bands in the extreme metal movement. M: Emperor always had and still has an extremely good reputation, every album (even Prometheus) has its legion of fans. What do you think the band has brought to the black metal scene that no other band have brought, what makes it really special? Samoth: I think already on the first mini album we started to explore and push our style, and to find a more personal sound. We’ve always tried to push things and also been very true to ourselves and what we want to do, making no compromises. Also, the collaboration between Ihsahn and I has been very good for many years. M: How did you and Ihsahn collaborate on the records? Was he the one who brought in the “symphonic side” and you the “death metal side”? Samoth: Yes, Ihsahn has a strong “symphonic side”, and has definitely added many unique layers to the Emperor sound. We were sort of like Yin and Yang in many ways, but that combo worked very well for Emperor and the way we built the band, both musically, conceptually and image wise. I think since the beginning we worked with a common vision, but I guess as we grew more progressive with IX Equilibrium, we became a bit more divided, with him more progressive and with me more focused on extreme metal. M: How are your relations with Ihsahn today? Do you often speak or talk to each other? Samoth: We have good relations today, very relaxed and easy going. We don’t really hang out much, but sometimes we chat on the phone or stop by each other’s houses for a coffee and to see each other’s families, or to talk business and metal. We have a lot of history together and there’s definitely respect between us. M: During the “reunion” concerts, you a song off “Prometheus”. I remember that when this record came out, you stated that it was no Emperor record. With some distance, what do you think of this album which, in my opinion, is awesome just like the others? Publié par Rock'N'Balls sur www.rocknballs.com | Tous droits réservés Samoth: I don’t think I ever said that it wasn’t an Emperor record, but I said it wasn’t a group effort, it was more like Ihsahn’s record. I’m proud of that album too, no doubt, but it’s the album that means the least to me as far as being emotionally involved in it. It’s a strong record that challenges the listener. “In the Wordless Chamber” was actually one of my favourite songs in the reunion live set, but then again, that is the song from Prometheus which is closer to the older Emperor sound. « We were sort of like Yin and Yang in many ways, but that combo worked very well for Emperor. » (Samoth, about working with Ihsahn) M: What would be your favourite Emperor record today, and why? Samoth: Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk is probably my favourite recording. That’s when we really got back on track after all the turbulence within the band, and things really started to happen. Of course In the Nightside Eclipse is also very special, as it really put Emperor on the map and it has become a classic cult record and it seems to pass on to a new generation of metalheads. M: What does Zyklon have in store for us in a near future? Samoth: That’s a question I really can’t answer to at the moment. Zyklon are on an official break now. Destructhor is out touring with Morbid Angel, and I have a new project in works. This project, whose name is yet to be revealed, is basically my current musical priority. We’ve already taped a pre-prod demo with all the tracks that we will be recording as our debut. Soon there will be more official details regarding the project. However, I’m confident you haven’t seen the last of Zyklon. M: All right this is it! Thanks again for your time, Samoth! Lots of luck with your future endeavours, keep the good stuff coming! I leave you with the last words for all the Belgian Emperor-freaks... Take care, man. Samoth: No problem, thanks for the support.
