The FGH Contests are designed to give students in Grades 9, 10 and 11 an additional mathematical challenge during the school year, and one that requires full written solutions. Being able to do mathematics is an important skill; being able to communicate one’s findings (in mathematics or in any other field) is also very important. We were very pleased this year to see another healthy increase in the number of participants in these Contests. In general, many students writing these Contests are doing a better job each year of writing clear solutions to the problems. That being said, there is always work that can be done to help them improve these skills. Some students reduced their scores because they gave answers rather than solutions or presented untidy or illegible solutions. The averages on the Fryer, Galois and Hypatia Contests this year were 21.2, 25.1 and 23.1, respectively. We will continue to try to keep the averages on these papers in this range. Here are some specific comments on the problems. Fryer Contest 1. Average: 8.5 This question was well done. There were a number of calculation errors in (c). 2. Average: 7.3 Part (a) was well done with some errors in confusing diameter and radius. Part (b) was well done although many students had Billais walk across the field and down the straightaway rather than along the diagonal. Part (c) was done well by those who understood what to look for and not at all by the rest. 3. Average: 4.0 Part (a) was well done with some students missing the answer A = 0. Part (b) had many students with a wrong answer of B = 5 when they said that a positive integer is divisible by 6 whenever the sum of its digits is divisible by 6. Part (c) was well done by those students who attempted it. Part (d) had many solutions that were not explained properly. It also had a common wrong answer of 9 when students missed that 2CC is divisible by both 4 and 3 when C = 8. 4. Average: 1.4 Many students did not attempt this question. While the final problem is normally the hardest problem, the first part or two are usually accessible to many students and we would encourage all students to read and try at least these. Part (a) was the best done when students stayed organized in their counting. Part (b) was fairly well done. In part (c), students struggled with justifying their solutions. Many students got two marks in part (d) for determining the pattern and getting the answer. A small group of students got a third mark for trying to explain the pattern and only a tiny group got the fourth and final mark for properly explaining the pattern. Galois Contest 1. Average: 7.2 This problem was well done by many students. Some students seemed bothered by this new form for an equation of a line. 2. Average: 8.2 Parts (a) and (b) were well done. A small percentage of students answered how much of the red candle was left in part (a) or how many minutes were needed for the green candle’s height to reduce by 80 cm in part (b). Part (c) was well done. Part (d) was done reasonably well and many different approaches were used. 5 Some students introduced inaccuracy in their solution by rounding 16 and 24 . 3. Average: 6.5 Part (a) was generally well done. Some students only provided the last number in the 7th row. In part (b), 3 Comments on the Papers Commentaires sur les épreuves the most common incorrect answer for the first number in the 100th row was 9900, normally obtained from the incorrect calculation 100(101) − 2(100). Part (c) was done using a variety of approaches. Many students attempted trial and error and did not justify why 31 was correct. Many different approaches were used in the calculation of F . Some students dealt correctly with the decimal answers from their use of the quadratic formula. 4. Average: 3.2 Part (a) was well done and parts (b) and (c) were quite difficult, as intended. The visualization of the problem proved difficult for many. The identification of the tetrahedron in part (c) was difficult for some, and many others made incorrect assumptions in parts (b) and (c). Hypatia Contest 1. Average: 8.9 This question was very well done but with minimal justification in part (c). 2. Average: 7.5 Students did not have much difficulty with the first three parts. Most mistakes were errors often made when working with parabolas. Many students reached a correct final answer in part (d) but did not provide any reason why the parabolas intersect in exactly one point when a = − 12 . Some students mistakenly claimed that parabolas intersecting in exactly one point must meet at a common vertex. 3. Average: 2.6 This problem caused difficulties. Student answers suggested that the definition of a non-predictive sequence was well understood. However, it was easy to miss cases when listing or counting these sequences. As might be expected, part (a) was done better than part (b) which in turn was done better than part (c). A common error in part (b) was to only show the result for a single value of m. 4. Average: 4.0 For a final problem on the Hypatia Contests, this question was well done. Most answers to part (a) were correct. A large number of students came up with the correct answer in part (b) but did not justify that the answer is unique. It was not too difficult to find an expression for the surface area in part (c) but it was challenging to factor the expression and consider all cases towards determining l and w. 3.
