Neurophenotyping is the study of how specified genes, subjected to environmental influences and stressors, modify the brain, behavior and cognitive function. Researchers f rom the Douglas Mental Health University Institute use animal models to discover the interactions between genes and the environment, and how these interactions contribute to the development of mental illnesses. The objective is to identify potential risk factors that contribute to the vulnerability for mental illness and the development of abnormal behavior, as well as to pinpoint new inter ventions that might correct these deficits. Elle off re entre autres : Founded in 2006 with the support of the Q uebec Transgenic Research Network (QTRN), the Neurophenotyping Center consists of a team of internationally recognized investigators. It provides, to the scientific community of Q uebec and Canada, the expertise required to meet all of the challenges related to behavioral analysis. »» »» »» Consultation on the behavioral tests most appropriate for testing the hypothesis under investigation Development of experimental design and animal testing Statistical analysis and data interpretation Preparation of publication-ready reports All tests are conducted according to protocols approved by the Animal Ethics Committee of McGill University and conform to the guidelines established by the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC). //// Behavioural tests The effects of genetic modifications (transgenic, knock-out or knock in models) on central ner vous system function are complex and can influence animal behavior. Accurate identification of genetic effects requires appropriate behavioral analyses. The Neurophenotyping Center of the Douglas Institute is fully equipped for, and experienced with, a host of behavioral assays associated with psychiatric and neurological disorders. O ur expertise allows us to adapt a given test to the species employed, and to the specific hypothesis under investigation. »» »» »» »» »» »» Defensive bur ying Elevated plus maze Light-dark test Marble bur ying Open field Novelty-suppressed feeding (ThatcherBritton novelty conflict paradigm) » » Fear potentiated startle Learning and memor y »» »» »» »» Morris water maze Barnes maze Fear conditioning (contextual and cued) Olfactor y discrimination and memor y test » » Place recognition » » Radial arm maze » » Spontaneous alternation » » Object recognition test Motor function » » Open field locomotor activity » » Rotarod Sensor y function » » Thermal sensitivity test (Hargreaves) » » Von Frey hair test » » Conditioned taste aversion » » Tail flick » » Formalin test Stress » » Stress and depression » » Tail pinch » » Restraint test » » Cold test » » Social interaction Attention » » Pre-pulse inhibition (PPI) » » Latent inhibition » » Discriminative attention task (choices) Impulsivity »» Differential reinforcement of low rates task
