2010 Annual Report - The Champlin Foundations
THE CHAMPLIN FOUNDATIONS “…The future of our State and Country will depend on the young people who will eventually be running the Country, as well as its industries, and making the discoveries and inventions of the future. Whatever can be done to help them develop physically and mentally in the right direction will make this a better place in which to live...” George S. Champlin [excerpt from a letter written September 12, 1964] 2010 Annual Report The Champlin Foundations 2010 Annual Report CONTENTS th Campership Program – 20 Year Camp Ramsbottom Photographs - 1994 Selected Financial Information 2010 Grant Allocation Distribution Committee Members/Trustee Champlin Family 2010 Grants Camperships – 20 Years Though The Champlin Foundations have always specialized in capital funding, there have been a few exceptions. During the credit union crisis of 1991, our Distribution Committee was concerned that many Rhode Island families would be unable to send their children to summer camp. The decision was made to provide camps in Rhode Island with funds that could be used as scholarships, or “Camperships”, so that young people in financial need could still attend. While George S. Champlin did not have any children, the Committee was confident he would have approved as he was always deeply committed to the care and well-being of young people. Twenty years later, the program continues with grants totaling over $10,000,000 having been made for this purpose. These funds have allowed an average of 6,000 children per year to enjoy the many benefits that come from spending time outdoors at summer camps throughout Rhode Island as well as Eastern Connecticut and southeastern Massachusetts. Over thirty camps operated by nonprofit organizations serving Rhode Island youth have received our support. Many of these organizations have also been recipients of Champlin grants in support of capital improvement projects at their camp facilities. Recently we came across a scrapbook given to the Foundations by the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket commemorating the 1994 camping season at Camp Ramsbottom. It contains photographs and memorabilia of some of the first children to benefit from the Campership program. They are adults now, but doubtless remember the fun and enjoyment of that long ago summer made possible in part by George S. Champlin’s philanthropy. Keith H. Champlin, Florence Champlin Hamilton and Hope Champlin Neaves outlined for the Distribution Committees their collective philosophy on charitable giving. With the passing of the last Champlin sibling in 1987, the sentiments expressed in the following excerpts from this letter continue to be referenced by the Committee in its work, helping to keep alive the spirit of philanthropy practiced by this remarkable Rhode Island family. ______________________________________________________________________ September 12, 1964 “To the Members of the Distribution Committees of the Champlin Foundations A desire has been expressed for suggestions from the Grantors outlining their wishes in regard to the Foundations so that in future years these will be a guide in helping the Distribution Committees of the Foundations to carry out the wishes of the Grantors… …One of the main objects of giving should be to help people to help themselves. …The future of our State and Country will depend on the young people who will eventually be running the Country, as well as its industries and making the discoveries and inventions of the future. Whatever can be done to help them develop physically and mentally in the right direction will make this a better place in which to live. The elderly and sick should also have consideration as there are times when these people through no fault of their own are unable to take care of themselves… …It is believed that…, in general, the Foundations should provide capital funds for needed development rather than to provide funds for general operating expenses… …It is the sincere wish of the Grantors that these Foundations may continue to offer help to the helpless and hope to the hopeless in the future as we believe that they have done in the past and we feel confident that under the direction of men and women of good will, this will continue to be done.” Wife & Children of George Byron Champlin GEORGE S.
