Rendez-vous with
Jacques Tati
Des réalisateurs de cinéma assurant une détente parfaite : Jours de fête et Mon oncle en hommage à Jacques Tati,
qui en créant Monsieur Hulot, invente un genre d’humour caustique, où le spectateur rit « avec » et non contre le
protagoniste. Jean-Marie Poiré signe de son côté des aventures décapantes et farfelues, telles Les couloirs du temps – Les
visiteurs II ou encore L’opération corned beef. Enfin, rien n’est simple sur l’Ile de beauté où tout ressortissant de la
métropole va de surprise en surprise : c’est L’enquête corse. Le suspens est plus tendu avec l’un des premiers
réalisateurs cultes Henri-Georges Clouzot, spécialiste du film noir, mettant en scène l’illustre Pierre Fresnay dans
L’assassin habite au 21.
Born on October 9, 1907 in Le
Pecq, Yvelines, Jacques Tati
began his artistic development
as a mime. Having attained a
certain measure of success after
recording a number of his early
supporting cameos on film, Tati
decided to pursue a career in
filmmaking. Very seldom did he
ever make use of any audible
dialogue, choosing instead to anchor his actors and
storylines around tightly-choreographed visual stunts
and meticulously integrated sound effects. In all but
his first and last films, Tati played the leading role
as the awkward and socially inept Monsieur Hulot
who, with his trademark raincoat, umbrella, and pipe,
established himself as one of the most memorable
comic characters in cinema. Tati’s films confront a
variety of deep-seated cultural values such as Western society’s mindless obsession with American-style
consumerism, as well as the superficial nature of relationships between French social classes, most notably
exemplified in Playtime (1967), Trafic (1971), Jour de
Fête (1949), and Mon Oncle (1958). The latter went on
to win Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Tati was voted the 46th Greatest Director of all time by
Entertainment Weekly. An animated film entitled The
Illusionist is due out in 2009, based on an unproduced
script written in collaboration with famed screenwriter
Jean-Claude Carrière. Jacques Tati passed away on
November 4, 1982.
La fiction est par contre moins légère avec notamment Soraya, l’histoire romanesque et tragique de la première femme
du Shah d’Iran Mohamed Pahlavi. De son côté, Jeanne découvre le vrai visage tyrannique de son prince charmant, lors
de sa nuit de noces, dans Une vie. Comment taire plus longtemps l’existence de Guillaume, le fils illégitime sourd-muet
de Madame de Solar dans L’enfant du secret ?
Par contraste avec le luxe hyper branché d’Un week-end au Plaza Athénée, Paris, Isabelle Brokman nous plonge dans
les coulisses de la restauration scolaire en France, avec son documentaire La cuisine des cantines.
From filmmakers assuring a perfect détente: Jours de Fête and Mon Oncle pay homage to Jacques Tati who, in
creating Monsieur Hulot, invents a genre of caustic humor, where the spectator laughs with and not against the
protagonist. Jean-Marie Poiré makes his mark with eccentric and sarcastic adventures in films such as Les Couloirs
du Temps – Les Visiteurs II and L’opération Corned Beef. Finally, nothing is simple on the Ile de Beauté (Corsica) where
every metropolitan citizen goes from surprise to surprise in L’enquête Corse. Suspense is heightened with one of the
best cult film directors: Henri-Georges Clouzot, a film noir specialist directing the illustrious Pierre Fresnay in L’Assassin
Habite au 21.
Fiction is however less light with the notable Soraya, the Romanesque and tragic story of the first wife of the Shah of
Iran, Mohammed Pahlavi. For her part, Jeanne discovers the true tyrannical character of her prince charming on her
wedding night in Une Vie. In L’enfant du Secret, see how much longer the existence of Guillaume, the illegitimate deaf
mute son of Madame de Solar, can be kept quiet.

the exhausting burden of their water-fetching chores.
