Pediatric glaucoma is very different from adult
glaucoma.
Le glaucome pédiatrique est bien différent du glaucome
chez l’adulte.
Pediatric glaucoma has many causes.
Le glaucome chez l’enfant peut être dû à plusieurs
causes :
* Genetic (e.g. congenital glaucoma, infantile
glaucoma, juvenile glaucoma)
* Following cataract surgery (aphakic glaucoma),
* Due to ocular inflammation (iritis)
* Trauma
* Malformations of the eye (Axenfeld-Rieger,
aniridia, Peters anomaly)
* Diseases which affect the rest of the body (SturgeWeber Syndrome, Lowe Syndrome, congenital rubella)

There are special surgical procedures for children that
are not often used in adults such as:
* Goniotomy;
* Trabeculotomy; and
* Combined trabeculotomy-trabeculectomy.
Some medicines used in adults may have special side
effects in children or may even be safer.
Taking the eye pressure in children may require sedation
or examinations under anesthesia.
Optic nerve cupping, a sign of glaucoma, may be
reversible in children unlike adults where the changes
are permanent.

Plusieurs interventions chirurgicales effectuées chez les
enfants ne le sont pas ou très rarement chez l’adulte :

Goniotomie ;
Trabéculotomie ;
Chirurgie combinée trabéculotomie –
trabéculectomie.
Certains médicaments utilisés chez l’adulte peuvent
avoir des effets secondaires chez l’enfant ou encore
peuvent être plus sécuritaires.
Prendre la pression intraoculaire chez l’enfant peut
exiger une sédation ou un examen sous anesthésie.
Current research in pediatric glaucoma is aimed at:
* Application of adult and medical treatments to
children.
* Development of new surgical procedure (e.g.
endoscopic diode laser ciliary photoablation).
* Gene discovery and its possible future use for gene
therapy.
L’excavation de la papille optique, un signe de
glaucome, peut être réversible chez l’enfant,
contrairement à l’adulte chez qui ce changement est
permanent.
La recherche actuelle en glaucome pédiatrique a comme
buts :
