“J’ai bien été attaqué par un requin”
Un Belge assure avoir été attaqué mardi par "un requin bleu" alors qu’il se baignait à "maximum
six mètres de la plage Sant Martí d’Empúries", un village de la Costa Brava situé dans la
commune de l’Escala, en Catalogne. Cela, même si le maire de la localité concernée parle à
présent d’une "rumeur qui s’est propagée grâce à la nervosité ambiante" !
"Si j’étais maire de cette localité, je dirais certainement que c’est une rumeur pour ne pas effrayer
les touristes et éviter que ma plage se vide. C’est en effet la première fois, ici, qu’un baigneur est
attaqué par un requin", réagit Thierry Frennet, 48 ans.
"Je ne suis pas un mythomane. Je n’ai aucun intérêt à raconter des histoires. C’est d’ailleurs à
l’infirmerie qu’on m’a confirmé qu’il s’agissait probablement d’un ‘tintorera’ - requin bleu - mais
que ce genre de requin ne s’approchait en règle générale pas si près des côtes."
Vous l’aurez compris. Notre compatriote maintient plus que jamais sa version des faits. "J’ai bien
vu un requin mesurant près d’un mètre. Celui-ci avait un aileron et nageait avec d’autres
congénères à quelques mètres de moi lorsqu’il a foncé et bondi la gueule ouverte en direction de
mon visage", raconte le quadragénaire, originaire de Waregem.
"Je n’avais plus pied. J’ai juste eu le temps de protéger mon visage en mettant mes bras devant.
C’est pour cela que je n’ai été blessé qu’au coude. La plaie est superficielle, mais c’est normal
puisque ces requins n’attaquent logiquement pas les humains, sauf quand ils se sentent
menacés. C’est sans doute ce qui a dû se produire dans le cas présent."
Dans la foulée, "le requin s’est dirigé vers un petit garçon, âgé d’une dizaine d’années, que j’ai
immédiatement aidé à sortir de l’eau", poursuit-il. "En sortant de l’eau, j’ai vu que je saignais au
coude. Le petit garçon, lui, pleurait. J’ai été me faire soigner à l’infirmerie et c’est peu après que
j’ai constaté que les secouristes de la Croix-Rouge procédaient d’initiative à la fermeture de la
plage…"
Cinq plages au total seront d’ailleurs fermées aussitôt, avant d’être rouvertes au public ce
mercredi. Des gardes-côtes se mettront même à la recherche du squale, mais sans résultat.
"Cela fait 45 ans que je passe mes vacances sur la Costa Brava et je n’ai jamais connu ça. On
en rigole aujourd’hui, mais j’ai vraiment paniqué sur le moment même", confie Thierry Frennet,
account manager chez Recordbank.
La Croix-Rouge indique quant à elle dans son rapport médical rédigé a posteriori que la blessure
dont souffre la victime n’est pas la conséquence d’une morsure ou griffure d’animal dans l’eau.
Toujours est-il que la Ville de L’Escala reconnaît qu’elle ne peut exclure que le touriste belge a
bien été attaqué par un requin bleu, mais qu’étant donné l’absence de traces de morsure, il
pourrait également s’agir d’un gros poisson, d’algues ou encore d’une méduse.
“I’ve been attacked by a shark”
A Belgian claims to have been attacked on Tuesday by a blue shark while he was swimming no
more than six metres from the beach at Sant Marti d’Empuries, a village on the Costa Brava
located in the town of L’Escala, in Catalonia. This, even though the mayor of the area is now
talking of a rumor that spread through fear.
“If I was the mayor of this town, I would definitely say this is not a rumor to frighten tourists and
empty my beach. This is indeed the first time that swimmer is attached by a shark here,” says
Thierry Frennet, 48.

“I’m not a liar nor have an interest in telling stories. The infirmary told me that it was probably a
‘tintorera.— blue shark, but this kind of shark generally does not approach so close to the coast.”
He says, “I saw a shark measuring about one metre. It had a fin and swam with others a few
meters from me when he jumped open-mouthed towards my face.”
“I had just time to protect my face with my arm. That’s why the injury is at the elbow. The wound
is superficial but it is not normal since these sharks do not attack humans, except when they feel
threatened. This is probably what happened in this case.”
“The shark headed for a 10-year-old boy which I helped out of the water. When I came out of the
water I saw that I was bleeding. I went to the infirmary for treatment. Later lifesavers closed the
beach. In total, five beaches were immediately closed but reopened on Wednesday. The coast
guard searched for a shark but without result.
“For 45 years I’ve spent my holidays on the Costa Brava. We laugh now, but I really panicked
then,” said Thierry Frennet, account manager at Recordbank.
In its medical report the Red Cross writes that the injury sustained was not caused by a marine
animal, but the City of L’Escala did not exclude the possibility the injury was caused by shark.
