Visit the medieval city
Closely linked to the great abbey, the
town of Cluny developed from 910 and,
like the abbey itself, was extremely prosperous during the Romanesque era.
Cluny offers one of Europe’s greatest
densities of mainly Romanesque
Medieval
houses
still
standing.
Over 200 houses built between the 11th and
14th centuries can still be seen, around fifty of
which still boast all or some of their façade
décor.

Secret houses
In the season, a group of house
owners gives you the possibility of
discovering Cluny and its secrets in
a unique way… These tours, which
are free of charge, are guided by the owners
themselves.

Notre Dame Church is the town’s main parish
church in the heart of the town centre. The
urbanpower, often in disagreement with that of
the abbot, had set up its first town hall in this
square. The church is a fine Gothic building, the
porch of which spread out onto the square and
was destroyed just before the French Revolution.
Inside, the architectural homogeneity is quite
remarkable and a beautiful light lights up this very
stark building that Pidou-Berlu watches over.
THE NATIONAL STUD FARM
At the foot of the famous Abbey of Cluny,
the National Stud Farm was created in 1806,
to meet the needs of Napoleon’s army.
Guided tours to discover this place and its
occupants. For children, interactive family visit
based on a trail of the senses. In the summer,
two attractions offer a unique encounter
with the horses: Cluny Thursdays offering a
presentation of the horses, equestrian show....;
and the equestrian cabarets, a dinner-show in
the prestigious setting of the Stud Farm.

When war broke out in August 1914, French
soldiers set off with flowers on their rifles,
convinced that they would soon be home
again. But war dragged on. At the front in the
trenches or behind the lines, soldiers began
to make a multitude of objects during their
short rest periods.
They were first and foremost intended for
practical purposes. And then, to ward off
their anguish between two assaults and defy
the enemy, the soldiers began to make gifts
for their families: mugs or bracelets, photo
frames, desk sets, vases …
To commemorate the centenary of
mobilisation in August 1914, over 1000 works
of art made by First World War soldiers are
exhibited across 420m² of museum space:
sculpted pegs, canes, embroideries, lighters,
rings, ink pots, paper cutters, lamps, planes,
miniature helmets, pen holders ….. plus items
brought back from captivity.
Explanatory notices are also on display,
with hundreds of old postcards and
documents:
the front and the trenches,
events, propaganda, the great battles…
