ressources vivantes du plateau continentul africain de l'Atlantique, de"leurs
stocks et de leur peche, entre le Detroit de Gibraltar et le Cap VertII.

Sahara.

Une etude systematique sur llo.spect physico-chimique de 10. Mer d'Alboran
est prevue pour l'annee 1966 et sera developpee dans le Lo.boro.toire de Malaga
et avec l'o.ide du "Xauen".

In the Atlantic aren during the year 1965-1966 little work was carried
out by British research vessels. Both the research vessel "Ernest Holt" nnd
the research vessel "Clione", worked in thE' westE'rn approachE's to the British
Isles betweE'n NorthE'rn Ireland and St. Kilda on herring surveys. Larval
sUrveys were performed and some trawl catches made in addition to echosurveys.

No work was done in the ICES Atlnntic area by the research ships based
in Abe-rdeen.
The British Naval Survey ship H.M.S. "Dalrymple" took aseries of
plankton sampIes on a line from Northern Ireland to Rockall in April and in June-.
The Oceanographic Laboratory of thE' Scottish Marine Biological
Association in Edinburgh continued to work with the Continuous Plankton Recorder.
Irlande

The nature of the catch in industrial fishing off the south-west, west
and north-west coasts was studied in 1965.
•
The stock of Nephrops off the south-west coast was studied for the
third year in succession. A paper incorporating the results from these
investigations is in the course of preparation. ~Vhiting from south-west
Donegal were examined for length, age and maturity during the peak of the fishing
season.
The following rare fish were identified:
Two specimens of Hexanchus griseus were taken off Kinsale, Co. Cork.
Two speciffiens of Raja undulata were taken off Co. Kerry, whilst a
specimen of My1iobatis aq~ wns trawled off the Fastnet Rock.
One specimen of Malacocephalus laevis was taken in 50 fathoms off
Co. Kerry.
A single spccimen of Lampris luna was ttaken in a salmon net off the
west coast.
Two specimens of Boops boops were taken, one off Co. Cork and the other
off Co. Kerry.
One specimerr of Centrolophus niger was taken off Co. Cork.
Four specimens of Scorpaena dactyloptera were taken off Co. Kerry.

Observations were made on the species-composition of catches landed
from freezer stern-trawlers nt Swinoujscie.
A list of species occurring in the landings was made for our ovm
purposes, with photographies as weIl as system~tio data of the species from
the following familiae: Sparidne, Serranidae, Cnrangidae, Pomadasidae~
Lutjanidae and r.lupeidne.
A statistic analysis of oo.tches nocording tovessel types, regions,
months and fis hing effort has been made.
Materials collected in the months November - December 1964 were analysed
in the course of a cruise of the R. V. "Vlieozno".

Field experiments with the help of pelagic trnwl for mackerel nnd
horse-mackerel catches.
Observation on species-composition in the catches.
Analysis of stntistics of landings from Polish freezer stern-trawlers.

In 1965 waters of the eastern part of the Atlantic Ocean from the Bay of
Biscay and Portugal to the Gulf of Guinea inclusive, and further south were
investigated. Fish resources in waters of the slope area off North~~est Africa
dovm to the 500-1000 m depth wcre studied as weIl. The arcas to the west of the
British Isles on the Bank of Porcupine, as weIl as open areas of the Guinea
Gulf and tropical Atlantic were also covered. Research vessels, medium-size
trawlers and large-size trawlers took part in the work.
The hydrography vm.s studied, zooplankton and ichthyoplankton were
collected, the composition of the ichthyofnuna, distribution and biology of the
major co~~ercial fish nnd shellfish were also under investigation.
The 5° und 10° hydrographical sections in the Gulf of Guinea were made,
and currents, tempernture and the chemistry of the ~nters. of the tropical
Atlantic were studied; the operations were made ut one and two-day stations.
Chlorophyll content and the production of phyto- and zooplankton were determined
by means of the Radio-Carbon methode
Studics on the distribution of Trachurus trachurus, Trichiurus lepturus
und Snrdina pilchardus were made in the eastern waters of the Atlantic from
Portugal to Morocco and Sa~~ra. Scomber japonicus and Sparidae, as weIl as
prawns (muinly Penaeus duorurum) and lobstcrs were also investigated south of
Morocco and as far south as the Gulf of Guinea. In the southern areas,
Decapterus ronchus and Selar crumeophthalmus were studied in addition to
T. trachurus. Spari0 A P were mainly represented by Dentex maroccanus and
D. macrophthalmuö.
In the slope area the distribution of Merluccius merlucius, Trichiurus
lepturus, Chlorophthalmus spp. and other species, partinlly deep-vm.ter fish,
were investiga~ed.
