markusedbytheartist’sassistantPierreAndrieu[Lugt838].Ifverifiedastheformer,thiswould
indicate that the watercolour was included in the sale of Delacroix’ estate in 1864. In that sale,
drawings were listed by subject matter, sometimes in lots comprising numerous items, with
descriptive titles but without measurements or illustrations. It has not so far been possible to
identifythisparticulardrawinginthesalecatalogue.
The work was later owned by Louise Léouzon Le Duc, née Riesener (1860–1944) and/or her
husbandClaudeLéouzonLeDuc(1860–1932),anadvocateattheParisCourt.Louise’sfather,the
painter León Riesener, was Eugène Delacroix’ first cousin; the family is known to have owned
several Delacroix works. Incidentally, the couple’s daughter, Claudie, went on to become the
secondwifeoftheDelacroixscholarRaymondEscholier.
