2012 Annual Report
Dear Supporters,
We are pleased to present you with Grow Pittsburgh’s second annual
report. Two thousand twelve marked a time of significant change
and exciting opportunities for our organization, and we’re looking
forward to the years ahead with great enthusiasm.
To start the year, we moved into a brand new office space in
Larimer that better accommodates our growing staff and provides
ample storage space for the various tools and supplies we utilize to
better serve the local urban gardening community. We invite you to
stop by and visit us at 6587 Hamilton Avenue to see it for yourself!
We also saw exceptional growth in our educational programs—we
added two new Edible Schoolyard sites, built 5 new community
gardens and launched an Apprentice and Intern program at both
of our production sites as well as within our office.
Our overall production numbers also increased, as did the amount
of produce we’ve provided to communities of need.We saw total
vegetable production rise by over a half ton and enabled a whopping
69 percent increase in farm stand sales, proving what a vital service
this is to neighborhoods like Braddock and Homewood where
access to fresh, local food is scarce and often unaffordable.
As we prepare for the 2013 growing season and beyond, Grow
Pittsburgh is about to embark on a 3 year strategic plan that will
better align our programs and even launch some new initiatives
that will strengthen the urban agriculture community here in
Pittsburgh. Our plan will be announced in the coming months!
There’s much more to report on the pages that follow. We hope
you’ll take a look. As always, thank YOU for your support of
Grow Pittsburgh. We could not do this without you!
Warmly,
Julie Butcher Pezzino
