Rock the Sun - Solar Sound System
((( Rock the Sun ) )) A technological, social & cultural project in India ____________________________________ supported by endorsed by the United Nations Foundation A project by Cédric Carles, Eric Boros & Marylise Frecheville put forth by two associations: Atelier2cé / Suisse http://www.solarsoundsystem.org Vialka / France http://vialka.com/ When & where? See annexe documents from Swissnex Partner Associations DESIGN & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT CULTURE & CREATION EDUCATION & ENERGY BANGALORE creative common ground They talk about the project Its unique position between practicality and design, between social message and entertainment will no doubt ensure its success in the future » « Dr. Ferzina Banaji Head, Cultural Affairs and CommunicationAlliance Françaisede Delhi « The Solar Sound Project is a deceptively simple use of technology to integrate into the art and culture of ordinary people, in lands where modern technology's impact is largely indirect. It will provide a bridge for artists, for whom circumstance has them on the deprived side of the economic and digital divides, to explore the opportunities of new media from their traditional strongholds. » Vickram Crishna Audio engineer, technical partner, Bombay « Exchange and collaboration in the field of culture will make all of us reside in happiness in this global village. » Amitava Bhattacharya Founder and creator of Banglanatak association With whom, why? Our concept is 1_to build a SolarSoundSystem 2_use it for presentations, dj sets, Vialka concerts in India 3_create exchange on energy topics Our goals : To establish a link between sustainable development and culture. To promote Swiss design and technology, and provoke Indo-Swiss exchange. On-site construction of a socio-cultural and educational module with local partners. To bring attention to energy-related and environmental problems. To exchange practical experience using socio-cultural and educational tools. To expand the visibility of the project on an international level, through our collective media contacts: national radio, television and press (who have already expressed great interest) To offer a space for artistic expression independent of the electric system. Project benefits A solar sound system: for the promotion of non-conventional energy, both a teaching tool and a catalyst for cultural collaboration. Long-term goals for Indian partners: The concept is that a local group or organization would take over the solar powered machine after the tour, allowing them to autonomously animate events as well as organize tours in the region. The group would thereby be able to provide a source of solar energy for: – powering equipment during cultural events – amplification of presentations and lectures – an educational workshops) tool (solar energy presentations, The project that we are presenting will be built using Solar Sound Systems already in use as a model. The existence of several of these systems and their numerous cultural and didactic interventions is the proof that these projects long-term viability. are successful and have a Solarsoundsystems 3S1_ since 1999_Lausanne 3S2_ since 2002_Geneva 3S3_itex mobile energy exposition 3S4_ since 2008_Flexcell_Lausanne 3S6_ since 2010_Marseille «Vialka» Association Vialka, music duo Vialka is a new music guitar, percussion and vocal duo. Vialka hail from deepest France, via everywhere and nowhere. They are a devilishly high-spirited guitar/drums duo who tour hard and fast across the world. Their music skips joyfully across borders, channeling desert blues, Chinese folk songs, scatter rock and European gypsy song dynamics in a whirlwind of dervish energy. Their endless gypsy punk folk rock tales, hard hitting poly-rhythms and yelps and howls make for a danceable and intoxicating brew. Vialka is not just a musical project, but a social scientific experiment, attempting to meet, communicate and work with extraordinary and little known musicians and artists from everywhere and nowhere - with particular interest in polluted dictatorships, bleak colonies, and monarchic democracies. They have toured extensively in over fifty countries (100+ concerts per year) across Europe, Africa, North America and Asia, and have collaborated with Chinese musician Xiao He, French mbira player/drummer Andrew Dymond, Italian saxophonist Jacopo Andreini, Macedonian artist collective OPA, Swiss cinematographer Sébastien Riond, French eco-designer Cédric Carles, the legendary former-CAN singer Damo Suzuki, and New Zealand drummer Kieran Monaghan.. Area of activity: Vialka is a non-profit association for the promotion of performing arts, working in various domains related to: -Artistic creation: musical and multi-disciplinary performances, collaboration -Performing arts: organization of international tours -Audiovisual production: for the promotion of artists and their activities, an internet site, multi-disciplinary performances. History The Vialka Association was created in July 2004 to respond to a need to professionalize the musical duo of Marylise Frecheville and Eric Boros and their various artistic activities. With an initial grant from the European Community (Future Capital), the association was able to invest in quality music production (releasing approximately one album every two years), and more touring, including 100 concerts per year in more than 50 countries. It also developed an essential tool within new music networks: the internet site www.vialka.com. The association also strives to import lesser-known yet extraordinary foreign artists and is dedicated to collaboration with them: 2/5BZ (Turquie), NOM (Russie), Xiao He (Chine). To assist these faraway travels, the association has received funding from: Pro Helvetia (tours in Japon and in the Balkans 20022004), the Embassy of France in China in 2005, the Institut Français in Georgia in 2009, the Office Franco-Québécois pour la Jeunesse in 2006 and 2010. Current projects Autumn 2011: Tours in Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Lebanon, Scandinavia and Italy. 2012: Fabrication of a Solar Sound System and tour in India. Production of recordings. Communication, organization. European tour of the Chanson Internationale with Relais Culture Europe, tours in USA, Russia and China. Since its creation in 1999, the Solar Sound System has participated in more than 400 animations and has spawned several other modular sound systems currently in operation. Several other construction projects are being developed with partners: Marseille 2013 European Culture Capital, the Mimix association, the Swiss Eireine Foundation, and L’Agence 6-12 in Paris. Founded by Cédric Carles in 2004 and based in Lausanne, Atelier2cé is a network and knowledge base answering the needs and requirements of technical and artistic projects. In function of these projects, a creative and technical team put their abilities together to form a large network, which in certain cases extends to an international level. The members of this think-tank share a multidisciplinary approach to their work. Atelier2cé creates objects, spaces and events optimizing the use of materials and favoring energy efficiency and recycling. Vialka play fiddly European folk music at high volume and velocity in a White Stripes setup, with Marylise Frecheville on clattering percussion and Pyrenean polyphonic singing, and Eric Boros on speed-metal gypsy guitar and shouting. Vialka can switch styles in seconds, leaping from lightfingered folk melodies to bruising metal power chords to declamatory cabaret in one exhilarating piece. My face hurts. I can’t stop smiling. Four stars! Stewart Lee / The Sunday Times (London – 07/08/2005) VIALKA: Succès Planétaire International Vialka are Marylise Frecheville and Eric Boros. They make their base in a farmhouse in central France, but are residents of the world. If there's a better case of musical nomadism than Vialka, I'm yet to hear it: on Succès Planétaire International, anything they pick up is theirs, and anything they put down returns to the flux. It starts with 'Premiers Pas', an eccentric stitching of countless styles – oompah tuba, flowery pipes, xylophone, tangled splatter-drumming, keening vocals from Marylise, funereal folk laments from Eric, and invasive technology courtesy of guest noisician Crank Sturgeon, who hurls all sorts of random vocal gibberish into the fray. It lacks any discernable backbone but still dances the room on sheer vivacity and thrill for life. Elsewhere, there is dancing mbira from Duracell's Andrew Dymond ('Good Riddance'), Chinese song from Dadainspired Beijing vocalist Xiao He ('Dutar') and a closing piece where Marylise and Eric milk the German folk song 'Hole In The Bucket' for maximum comedic effect. It's Vialka's most fragmented, silly, playful record to date, and listening to it you're reminded that what you look for in this world isn't newness per se - would you even recognise it if you saw it? - but art created with a passion for its place in the universe, are created out of sheer love for the now.
