Correct version of Song Study
5/ How many characters are mentioned ? Underline in the text to justify your
answer.
There are two characters in this text : a boy and a girl. For example on line 1
« I » and « he » are personal pronouns that indicate that there are two kids
playing. Then the pronoun « we » is used on line 2, which indicates that they
have a close or intimate relationship.
6/ What is the song about ? Underline in the text to justify your answer.
First the song is about childhood memories because the first stanza deals with
kids games. For example on line 2 « horses made of sticks » are mentioned.
Then this song is also about heartache, sadness or love sickness since on line 20
she says “sometimes I cry”.
7/ What is described in Stanza n° 1 ?
Chidhood memories and kids rôle playing as Cowboys are described on line 2.
8/ What does the chorus correspond to ? What does it evoke ?
The chorus corresponds to the song they sang as they played Cowboys
especially « Bang Bang » which is an anaphora. « Bang bang » is repeated 4
times, it imitates the sound of gunshots but sounds like a song within a song.
It's a mise en abîme.
9/ What changes in stanza n°2 ? Do they have the same relationship ? Justify.
In stanza 2 we learn that they grew up, they're older because she tells us that
« season came and changed the time » on line 9 so we can guess that time
passed. She also states that she calls him « mine », which shows us that they
have a more intimate relationship. « Mine » means that he belongs to her so we
can suggest that they got married. Maybe they're lovers now. In my opinion
they are engaged.
10/ What's wrong in stanza n°3 ? Make suggestions.
Maybe he's gone.
Perhaps he left her.
In my opinion they broke up because he cheated on her.
11/ How does she feel in the last chorus ? Why ? Does it evoke the same
feelings as in the first chorus ? Why ?
In the last chorus she feels sad because he's gone. It doesn't evoke kids playing
Cowboys anymore but it echoes her suffering, her heartache. Her pain equals
the pain from a gunshot. It is as if she had been shot.
12/ would always + BV… / used to + BV : what do these idioms express ? What
time do they refer to ?
These idioms express habits or repeated actions in the past.
13/ Compare this song to the text by Sun-Mi Huang from TEST 1 & 2. What is
similar and what is different ?
This song is similar to the text by Sun-Mi Huang because it talks about a love.
But Nancy Sinatra's love experience ends badly whereas Sun-Mi Huang's love
story has a happy ending. In the song they fall in love because they grow up
together so their friendship becomes a love affair. On the other hand in the
text by Sun-Mi Huang, it's about love at first sight, they fall in love instantly
even though they didn't know each other.
14/ Is the singer really dead in the end ? What poetic form is used here ?
The singer isn't dead in the end, death is an hyperbole and a metaphor for her
heartache. It's an extreme image to show us that she feels deeply hurt.
