N In 2000 kwam een kleine groep academici, politieke leiders en kunstenaars uit een twaalftal
landen bij elkaar om een actieprogramma op te stellen dat het belang van ‘global
interdependence’ onder de aandacht moest brengen. De gebeurtenissen van 11 september
2001 gaven hun inspanningen een tragische impuls en de groep besloot om 12 september, ‘the
day after’, uit te roepen tot Interdependence Day (dag van de onderlinge afhankelijkheid).
Sindsdien wordt elk jaar ergens in de wereld het Interdependence Day Forum
georganiseerd. Inspirator is de Amerikaanse schrijver en professor Benjamin Barber, vooral
bekend van zijn boek Jihad vs McWorld (1995).
Na Philadelphia, Rome, Parijs, Casablanca en Mexico City is in 2008 Brussel aan de beurt.
Het forum is een internationale conferentie waarbij academici, politici, vertegenwoordigers
van diverse NGO’s, kunstenaars, journalisten en anderen debatteren over Oplossingen zonder
grenzen voor Problemen zonder grenzen.
Het subthema voor het Brusselse Forum is The City as Commons in a Divided World, de
stad als een gedeelde plek in een verdeelde wereld. Meer dan de helft van de wereldbevolking
woont ondertussen in grote stedelijke agglomeraties. Het zijn interculturele
samenlevingslaboratoria waar de interdependentieproblematiek in een geconcentreerde vorm
is terug te vinden. Hun burgers verweren zich tegen de kwalijke en verenigen zich ter
ondersteuning van de goede interdependentie.

douzaine de pays, s’est réuni pour établir un programme d’action qui attire l’attention sur
l’importance de l’interdépendance mondiale. Les événements du 11 septembre 2001 ont
donné une impulsion tragique à leurs efforts, et le groupe a proclamé le 12 septembre, « le
jour suivant le 11 septembre », Journée de l’Interdépendance.
Depuis lors, le Forum de la Journée de l’Interdépendance se tient chaque année, quelque
part dans le monde. L’inspirateur en est l’auteur et professeur états-unien Benjamin Barber,
surtout connu pour son ouvrage Djihad versus Macworld (1995).
Après Philadelphie, Rome, Paris, Casablanca et Mexico City, c’est au tour de Bruxelles
d’accueillir en 2008 le Forum, une conférence internationale, pendant lesquels universitaires,
politiciens, représentants de diverses ONG, artistes, journalistes et autres participants
débattent de la question : « solutions sans frontières à des problèmes sans frontières » !
Le thème sous-jacent du Forum bruxellois est The City as Commons in a Divided World, la
ville en tant qu’espace commun dans un monde divisé. Plus de la moitié de la population
mondiale vit entretemps dans de grandes agglomérations urbaines. Dans ces laboratoires de
cohabitation interculturelle, on retrouve la problématique de l’interdépendance sous une
forme concentrée. Des citoyens s’y associent pour résister aux interdépendances néfastes et
soutenir les interdépendances bénéfiques.
E In 2000, a small group of academics, politicians and artists from twelve countries met to set
up an action programme with the aim was to draw attention to ‘global interdependence’. The
events of 11 September 2001 gave their efforts a tragic tenor, and the group decided to
proclaim 12 September − ‘the day after’ − Interdependence Day.
Since then the Interdependence Day Forum has become an annual event held in different
cities throughout the world. Its source of inspiration is the work of American writer Professor
Benjamin Barber, known to a wide public principally for his book Jihad vs McWorld (1995).
In 2008, after Philadelphia, Rome, Paris, Casablanca and Mexico City, it is now Brussels’
turn to host the forum. The event will include a three-day international conference during
which academics, politicians, NGOs, artists, journalists and others will debate “Solutions
without Boundaries for Problems without Boundaries”.
The sub-theme of the Brussels Forum is The City as Commons in a Divided World. Today
more than half of the world population lives in large urban agglomerations. In these
intercultural social hotbeds the problem of interdependence is present in a concentrated form.
How can city dwellers resist the negatives of unstable globalization and unite to support a
strong and enduring interdependence?

N Als thema voor de zesde editie van het Interdependence Day Forum koos de internationale
stuurgroep voor The City as Commons in a Divided World.
Er is volop een herschikking van onze wereld en van de bijhorende samenlevingsvormen
aan de gang. De negentiende-eeuwse opdeling van de wereld in landen of natiestaten brokkelt
af. Het idee dat er evenveel samenlevingen zijn als naties en dat daarbinnen een ‘eenheid’
bestaat, verliest terrein. We leven steeds meer in één wereld, in één mondiale, postnationale
samenleving.
Parallel met deze tendens van globalisering over de natiestaten heen, winnen echter ook
lokalisering en regionalisering aan belang. Er ontstaat een driehoeksverhouding tussen steden,
landen en de wereld waarbij de stad steeds duidelijker een belangrijk knooppunt wordt van
politieke en sociale wederopbouw. De huidige neoliberale globalisering schept overal sociale
onrust en ongelijkheid. De stad vormt één van de niveaus waarop er opnieuw regulering kan
ontstaan. De stedelijke samenleving genereert nieuwe vormen van samenleven en kan ons
helpen opnieuw grip te krijgen op de werkelijkheid.
Mondialisering, flexibilisering, vermarkting, individualisering en fragmentatie, het zijn
allemaal veranderingsprocessen die in de stedelijke realiteit extreem voelbaar zijn, maar
waarbij de stad meteen ook het vertrekpunt van actie en reactie kan zijn, om deze processen
onder controle te krijgen. De stad wordt dan de voorhoede van een nieuwe samenleving.

Notre monde, et les formes de vie sociale qui l’accompagnent subissent un réajustement
complet. La division du monde en pays ou en États nations, opérée au cours du XIXe siècle, se
délite. L’idée qu’il y a autant de sociétés que de nations, faisant chacune montre d’une
« unité », est en net recul. Nous vivons de plus en plus dans un monde unique, dans une
société mondiale post-nationale.
Parallèlement à cette tendance de mondialisation au-delà des États nations, la localisation et
la régionalisation gagnent du terrain. On observe l’émergence d’une relation triangulaire entre
les villes, les pays et le monde, dans laquelle la ville devient de toute évidence une plaque
tournante importante d’un renouveau social et politique. La mondialisation néolibérale
actuelle engendre partout des tensions et des inégalités. La ville constitue l’un des leviers
susceptibles de générer une régularisation. La société urbaine fait naître de nouvelles formes
de vivre ensemble et peut nous aider à avoir prise sur la réalité.
Si la mondialisation, la flexibilité, la marchandisation, l’individualisation et la
fragmentation sont autant de processus de transformation extrêmement tangibles dans la
réalité urbaine, la ville peut toutefois se révéler le berceau de l’action et de la réaction qui
permettent de juguler ces processus, et ainsi constituer l’avant-garde d’une nouvelle société.

theme for the sixth edition of the Interdependence Day Forum.
A reordering of our world and the corresponding forms of living together is underway. The
nineteenth-century division of the world into countries or nation states is disintegrating. The
idea that there are as many societies as there are nations, and that there is ‘uniformity’ within
these nations is losing ground. We are increasingly living in one world, in a single global,
post-national society.
Yet parallel with this trend toward globalisation across the nation states, localisation and
regionalisation are also gaining importance. A triangular relationship exists between cities,
countries and the world, with the city assuming an increasingly clearer role as an important
interchange of political and social reconstruction. Present neo-liberal globalisation is creating
social turmoil and inequality everywhere. The city constitutes one of the levels through which
regulation can again take place. The urban community is generating new forms of
coexistence, and can help us regain a grip on reality.
Globalisation, hyper-consumerism, individualisation and fragmentation: all are change
processes that are very apparent in urban reality. These same processes, however, also make
the city the point of departure for action and reaction that can allow us to regain control of
these processes. The city thus becomes the vanguard of a new society.
The old aspiration? Independence
The new reality: interdependence
Every challenge we face today from climate and crime to technology and markets, and
communications and public health is global in character. Yet the institutions of democracy we
rely on to address these challenges are still locked up inside sovereign states pursuing the old
logic of independence. But in an interdependent world of diseases, economies and conflicts
without borders, we also need citizens without borders – democracy without borders. Which
means if we are to survive interdependence and flourish in liberty, we must either globalize
democracy or democratize globalization.
Where once nations depended on sovereignty alone to secure their destinies, today they
depend on one another. In a world where the poverty of some imperils the wealth of others,
none are safer than the least safe. Interdependence is not a strategy of idealists, but a realistic
necessity.

N Het Interdependence Day Forum strijkt op de eerste conferentiedag met opzet midden in
Molenbeek neer, in het Huis van Culturen. De diversiteit van de gemeente en de
doorgedreven poging van inwoners, gemeentebestuur en tal van gemeenschapscentra om deze
diversiteit in positieve zin aan te wenden ten bate van de leefkwaliteit maakt van Molenbeek
de ideale plek om het debat over ‘de stad als een gedeelde, meervoudige plek’ op te starten.

La diversité de la commune et l’insistance avec laquelle des habitants, l’administration

Urban Imagination: On Multicultural Realities and Civil Participation
N Diversiteit is zonder twijfel dé eigenschap van vele grote steden. In tegenstelling tot de
natiestaten, die een uniforme identiteit nastreven, schuift de hedendaagse stad vooral haar
diversiteit, ‘het verschil’, naar voren.
Waar er ooit gestreden werd voor een scheiding van kerk en staat, is er vandaag vooral nood
aan een scheiding van cultuur en staat. We leven in een realiteit van multiculturalisme,
vermenging en globalisering. De oude fundamenten van sociale verbondenheid zijn door
individualisering en flexibilisering goeddeels weggevallen. De stedelijke samenleving kent
vele leefstijlen die lang niet meer samenvallen met etnische en religieuze gemeenschappen.
Het reële leven vertoont een steeds grotere variatie, vaak verbonden met consumptieculturen.
Op deze eerste conferentiedag bekijken we de stad als samenlevingslaboratorium waar
mensen met elkaar geconfronteerd worden. We bekijken haar als een pluriculturele plek waar
identiteit niet meer voortspruit uit gemeenschappelijke traditionele kenmerken maar uit de
capaciteit om om te gaan met ambivalentie, hybriditeit en zelfs conflict. De stad als een plek
om te leren, als een kern voor de opbouw van maatschappelijke vernieuwing, als een kader
voor hernieuwde deelname aan de publieke zaak.

Contrairement aux États nations, qui s’appuyaient sur une identité commune, la ville
contemporaine affiche avant tout sa diversité et ses « différences ».
Là où, autrefois, on a lutté pour la séparation de l’Église et de l’État, se profile à ce jour
surtout un besoin de séparation de la culture et de l’État. Notre réalité est celle du
multiculturalisme, de la mondialisation et de la mixité. Les anciens fondements de liens
sociaux ont en grande partie disparu sous le poids de l’individualisme et de la flexibilité. La
société urbaine réunit de multiples styles de vie qui ne coïncident plus avec des communautés
éthiques ou religieuses. La vie réelle manifeste toujours plus de variétés, souvent liées aux
cultures de consommation.
Le premier jour du colloque, nous appréhenderons la ville en tant que laboratoire social, où
les habitants se font face. Nous l’envisagerons en tant que lieu pluriculturel, où l’identité ne
procède plus de particularités traditionnelles communes, mais de la capacité à gérer
l’ambivalence, l’hybridité et même les conflits. La ville en tant qu’école de la vie, germe d’un
renouveau social et cadre de régénérescence de la participation à la chose publique, la res
publica.
E Diversity is without a doubt the principle feature of many large cities. In contrast to nation
states characterised by uniform identities, the contemporary city is concerned with diversity,
with ‘difference’.
Where once the goal was a separation of church and state, today there is a need for a
separation of culture and state. Our reality is one of multiculturalism, intermingling and
globalisation. The old foundations of social solidarity have largely disappeared giving way to
individualisation and flexibility. Urban society comprises many lifestyles that are no longer
connected with ethnic and religious communities. Real life offers increasingly greater
variation, albeit often linked to cultures of consumption.
On this first conference day, we will view the city as a societal laboratory where people are
confronted with one another. We view it as a pluricultural space where identity no longer
springs from common traditional characteristics but from the capacity to deal with
ambivalence, hybridism and even conflict: the city as a place to learn, a nucleus for the
construction of social innovation and a context for renewed participation in public matters.

The Entrepreneurial City: On the City as Labour Market in a Flexible Network
Economy
N Tijdens deze paneldiscussie gaan we in op de lokale social-economische realiteit in
grootstedelijke wijken. De dualisering op de arbeidsmarkt en de spanningen tussen de lokale
en globale realiteit in de hedendaagse netwerkeconomie worden steeds scherper. Almaar meer
grootstadsjongeren groeien op in gezinnen waar er geen inkomen uit arbeid is. Ondanks een
groot aantal vacatures stijgt de werkloosheid nog steeds in vele grote steden. Het toenemende
belang van opleiding en sociaal kapitaal heeft tot gevolg dat steeds meer werkzoekenden het
moeilijk hebben om zich in de reguliere arbeidscircuits in te schakelen. Met als gevolg dat een
steeds groter aantal stedelingen een bestaan opbouwt via de informele economie. Hoe kunnen
lokale besturen hierop reageren? Hoe kunnen stedelijke allianties hulp bieden bij het trotseren
van de mondiale economische storm?
F Lors de cette table ronde, nous nous pencherons sur la réalité socio-économique locale dans
les quartiers des grandes villes. L’économie en réseau actuelle attise la dualité sur le marché
du travail et les tensions entre les réalités locales et globales. Toujours plus de jeunes
grandissent dans des foyers qui n’ont aucun revenu du travail. Malgré le grand nombre de
postes vacants, le chômage demeure élevé dans les métropoles. L’importance croissante de la
formation et du capital social a pour conséquence que de plus en plus de demandeurs
d’emploi ont du mal à entrer dans le circuit régulier du travail. Dans ces conditions, un
nombre toujours plus important de citadins atterrit dans le circuit de l’économie informelle.
Comment les pouvoirs locaux doivent-ils réagir à ce phénomène ? Comment des alliances
urbaines peuvent-elles contribuer à braver la tempête économique mondiale ?
E During this panel discussion we will examine the local social-economic reality in
metropolitan neighbourhoods. Polarisation in the labour market and tensions between local
and global reality in the contemporary network economy are becoming increasingly acute.
More and more urban youth are growing up in families with no income from labour. Despite
the large number of job openings, unemployment continues to rise in many large cities. The
growing importance of training and social capital means that an increasing number of job
seekers are finding it difficult to find a place in the regular labour circuit. This results in an
ever larger number of city-dwellers existing via the informal economy. How can local
governments respond to this? How can urban alliances offer help in dealing with the world
economic storm?

worden steeds vaker verklaard langs religieuze breuklijnen. Kan er in grote steden, wars van
de institutionele verdeeldheid tussen de religies, toch een gedeelde plek ontwikkeld worden?
Wat zijn zoal de voorwaarden die religies onderling en gelovigen en niet-gelovigen aan
mekaar stellen opdat samenleven op een kleine stedelijke oppervlakte mogelijk is en blijft?

E Religious diversity is on the increase in the contemporary city. The ability of believers and
non-believers to live together is not self-evident. Major global conflicts are increasingly
explained along religious fault lines. Can a shared space nevertheless be developed in large

N Een stad is vele steden. Iedere inwoner van de grote stad creëert zijn eigen leefgebied, met
zijn eigen bakens en codes. Iemand mét kinderen kijkt met heel andere ogen naar de stad als
iemand zonder kinderen. Een jongere kijkt er anders naar dan een oudere. Een vrouw anders
dan een man. En ga zo maar door. Het zijn deze persoonlijke trajecten die centraal staan in
Spoken Walks. Inwoners van Molenbeek, sommige bekend, andere onbekend, leiden u rond
in hun gemeente en vertellen over de manier waarop zij er leven, over de mogelijkheden die
Molenbeek hen biedt én de knelpunten, over hun geschiedenis in hun Molenbeek. De
wandelingen hebben plaats midden in de Ramadan en dan nog op het drukste moment van de
dag. Molenbeek zoals velen het nog nooit hebben gezien.
Alle wandelingen starten om 18:00 aan de Sint-Jan Baptist kerk en eindigen ongeveer twee
uur later aan het CC Maritime, waar alle deelnemers een ramadandiner krijgen aangeboden
door Les Uns et les Autres, Foyer en Vaartkapoen.
F Une ville est plusieurs villes à la fois. Chaque habitant d’une grande ville crée son propre
territoire, pose ses propres repères et établit ses propres codes. Chacun appréhende la ville de
manière fort différente en fonction de sa condition, que l’on ait des enfants ou que l’on n’en
ait pas, que l’on soit jeune ou âgé, homme ou femme, et ainsi de suite. Ce sont précisément
ces trajectoires personnelles qui sont au cœur des Spoken Walks. Des habitants de
Molenbeek, pour certains connus, pour d’autres inconnus, vous proposent une visite guidée de
leur commune et vous racontent leur vie au quotidien, leur histoire personnelle dans leur
quartier, les opportunités que leur offre Molenbeek et ses points d’achoppement. Les
promenades ont lieu en plein mois du Ramadan et au moment le plus animé de la journée :
Molenbeek comme la plupart ne l’a encore jamais vu.
Toutes les promenades partent à 18h00 du parvis de l’église Saint-Jean-Baptiste et
s’achèvent deux heures plus tard au CC Maritime, où les promeneurs sont invités à partager
un dîner de Ramadan, concocté par Les Uns et les Autres, Foyer et Vaartkapoen.
E Each city is many cities. Every inhabitant of a large city creates a domain of his own in
which he lives, with his own markers and codes. Those with children see the city completely
differently from those with none. A young person sees it differently from an old person. A
woman differently from a man. And so on. It is these personal paths that Spoken Walks
focuses on. Inhabitants of Molenbeek, some familiar and others less so, will take you around
their borough and tell you about how they live there, the possibilities Molenbeek offers them,
and its sticking points, and about their history in their Molenbeek. These walks take place in
the middle of Ramadan and also at the busiest time of day. This is Molenbeek as many have
never seen it before.
All the walks start at the Church of St John the Baptist at 6 pm and arrive about two hours
later at CC Maritime where we are offering all the participants a Ramadan dinner, prepared by
Les Uns et les Autres, Foyer and Vaartkapoen.

Hij werkte samen met onder meer Francisco Camacho, Vera Mantero en Jérôme Bel, van wie
u al verschillende werken kon zien in het Kaaitheater. Op het Spoken World festival
presenteert hij eigen werk.
Miguel meets Karima is het relaas van een samenwerking die nooit tot stand kwam. Tussen
2004 en 2006 nam Pereira deel aan een aantal interculturele residentieprojecten in ZuidEuropa, Noord-Afrika en Zuid-Amerika. In die periode zou hij samen met de Egyptische
danseres en choreografe Karima Mansour een voorstelling maken. Maar dat liep spaak. Hun
culturele en persoonlijke verschillen bemoeilijkten de samenwerking zo, dat ze uiteindelijk
besloten om elk een eigen solo te maken. Beide solo’s werden na elkaar gepresenteerd op het
Alkantara Festival in Lissabon onder de titel Karima meets Lisbon meets Miguel meets Cairo.
In zijn deel omschrijft Pereira op een open en persoonlijke manier hoe en waarom het zo

complexifié leur collaboration, qu’ils ont décidé de créer chacun un solo, qui a été présenté –

E The Portuguese choreographer Miguel Pereira studied dance in Lisbon, Paris and New
York. He has worked together with people like Francisco Camacho, Vera Mantero and
Jérôme Bel, whose work has been staged in the Kaaitheater. He will be presenting his own
work at the Spoken World Festival.
Miguel meets Karima tells the story of a joint venture which never materialised. Between
2004 and 2006 Pereira participated in several intercultural residency projects in Southern
Europe, North Africa, and South America. During this period he was supposed to create a
performance together with the Egyptian dancer and choreographer Karima Mansour.
However, their cultural and personal differences led to difficulties and in the end they decided
to each create their own solo performance. Both solos were presented one after the other at the
Alkantara Festival in Lisbon under the title, Karima meets Lisbon meets Miguel meets Cairo.
In his part, Pereira openly and personally explains why it was so difficult to realise a project
together. In the meantime Miguel meets Karima has already been staged in Portugal, Spain,

N In een steeds meer geglobaliseerde wereld met een afnemend belang voor de natiestaten,
zullen de grote steden steeds duidelijker op het voorplan treden. Grote, complexe
stedennetwerken vormen een kader voor een nieuwe globale economie, voor nieuwe culturele
ruimtes en voor een nieuw politiek speelveld. Sommige van deze netwerkcircuits zijn
duidelijk zichtbaar, andere zijn subtiel, maar ze gaan in alle richtingen, kriskras over de
wereld. Het managen van deze ‘netwerksteden’ en het coördineren van de ‘stedennetwerken’
is een cruciale uitdaging.
We zijn vertrouwd met het denken over de samenleving als over mensen die op een bepaald
territorium bijeen zijn. Maar dat samenleven wordt vandaag meer en meer bepaald door een
complexe matrix van stromen die onze grote steden onderling verbinden. Deze nieuwe, zich
razendsnel ontwikkelende, interstedelijke geografie is één van de meest sturende en stuwende
krachten in de wereld aan het begin van de eenentwintigste eeuw.

« réseaux urbains » représentent un défi crucial.
Nous avons l’habitude de penser à la société comme à des personnes réunies sur un même
territoire, or, de nos jours, ce vivre ensemble est de plus en plus déterminé par une matrice
complexe de flux qui relient nos grandes villes entre elles. Cette géographie interurbaine, qui
se développe à la vitesse de la lumière, est l’une des forces motrices les plus dynamiques du
monde en ce début de XXIe siècle.
E In an increasingly globalised world with decreasing importance for the nation states, large
cities will come to the fore. Large, complex urban networks make up the context for a new
global economy, for new cultural spaces and for a new political playing field. Some of these
network circuits are clearly visible, others are subtle, but they go in all directions, crisscrossing the world. Managing these ‘network cities’ and coordinating the ‘urban networks’ is
a crucial challenge.
We are familiar with the idea of society as people gathering in a specific territory. Today,
however, this society is increasingly determined by a complex matrix of flows that mutually
bind our large cities. This new, rapidly developing, inter-urban geography is one of the most
guiding and driving forces in the world at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

The Public City: On the Art of Common Space
N De publieke ruimte van de stad is een forum, een ontmoetingsplaats. Ze vormt een kader
voor vele vormen van communicatie, tussen onbekenden en bekenden, tussen overheid en
burgers, tussen bewoners en gebruikers. De publieke ruimte is de tuin van de stedeling, de
straat en het plein het verlengstuk van de woning.
De publieke ruimte speelt een essentiële rol in het ondersteunen van de stedelijke diversiteit.
Haar inrichting moet confrontatie mogelijk maken zonder conflictueus te worden, zodat ze
kan bijdragen tot de aanvaarding van het ‘vreemde’ en de erkenning ervan als een belangrijke
stedelijke kwaliteit.
F L’espace public de la ville est un forum, un lieu de rencontre. Il constitue un cadre pour de
multiples formes de communication, entre personnes qui se connaissent et qui ne se
connaissent pas, entre autorités publiques et citoyens, entre habitants et usagers. L’espace
public est le jardin du citadin, la rue et la place sont le prolongement de son habitation.
L’espace public joue un rôle essentiel dans le soutien de la diversité urbaine. Son
instauration doit rendre le face à face possible sans qu’il tourne au conflit, afin qu’il puisse
contribuer à l’acceptation de ce qui nous est « étranger » et à sa reconnaissance en tant que
qualité urbaine majeure.
E The public space of the city is a forum, a meeting place that provides the context for many
forms of communication: between strangers and acquaintances, between government and
citizens, between residents and users. The public space is the garden of the city-dweller, the
street and the square an extension of the home.
The public space plays an essential role in supporting urban diversity. Its organisation must
make confrontation possible without turning it into conflict, in order thus to contribute to
acceptance of the ‘foreign’ and its recognition as a important urban quality.

The Creative City: On the Role of the Arts as Catalyst for Civil Awareness
N Welke rol kunnen kunstenaars spelen in de hedendaagse, diverse stad? Kunnen zij door hun
werk, te midden van de verdeeldheid, ruimte creëren om dingen te delen? In Brussel hebben
vele kunstenaars en kunstinstellingen de afgelopen tien jaar bewezen dat het mogelijk is om
openingen te maken in dikke institutionele scheidingsmuren, dat een artistiek-cultureel
stadsproject coalities kan sluiten met andere actoren in de civiele maatschappij, dat kunst nog
steeds een maatschappelijke katalysator kan zijn. In dit panelgesprek delen enkele van deze
Brusselaars hun ervaringen met buitenlandse kunstenaars.
F Quel rôle les artistes peuvent-ils jouer dans la ville contemporaine, si diverse ? Au milieu de
la division, peuvent-ils, par le biais de leur œuvre, créer de l’espace de partage ? À Bruxelles,
au cours des dix dernières années, de nombreux artistes et de multiples institutions artistiques
ont prouvé qu’il est possible d’ouvrir des brèches dans les solides barrières institutionnelles,
qu’un projet urbain artistique et culturel peut se coaliser avec d’autres acteurs de la société
civile et que l’art demeure un catalyseur social. Durant cette table ronde, certains de ces
artistes bruxellois partageront leur expérience avec des artistes résidants à l’étranger.
E What role can artists play in the contemporary, diverse city? Can they, amid the discord,
create a space to share things through their work? In Brussels over the last ten years, many
artists and art institutions have proven that it is possible to create openings in dense
institutional dividing walls and that an artistic-cultural urban project can bring about
coalitions with other actors in civil society: that art can still be a catalyst in society. In this
panel discussion, a number of these Brussels residents share their experiences with foreign
artists.

disintegration scenarios and all sorts of conferences on the climate attempt to formulate in
which problem areas we need to take action rather than just showing concern. What role can

E In his book Het Draagbare Paradijs (the portable paradise) the musician and journalist
Gerry De Mol describes the lives of nine women singers who immigrated to Belgium.
Together with a fine selection of musicians from all corners of the world, he creates a musical
evening specially for Spoken Word based on five of these women, in which war, exclusion
and a fear of the unknown plays a central role.

N Yesterday’s Man is het resultaat van de ontmoeting tussen twee theatermakers, de Libanees
Rabih Mroué and de Portugees Tiago Rodrigues. Later ontmoetten zij Tony Chakar, een
Libanese architect en schrijver, en Thomas Walgrave, bekend van zijn werk als scenograaf en
lichtontwerper bij tg STAN.
Yesterday’s Man beschrijft de reis van een vreemdeling die geconfronteerd wordt met een
stad die voortdurend verandert, Beiroet. Onder elke stad leeft een andere stad, en daaronder
weer een andere, enz. Soms komen om onbekende redenen fragmenten van zo een verborgen
stad aan de oppervlakte. Ze gaan de confrontatie aan met het heden van de nieuwe stad,
brutaal of aarzelend, soms streng en wreed.
Yesterday’s Man is een poging om het heden deels te laten samenvallen met het verleden en
zelfs met de onbekende toekomst.

Yesterday’s Man décrit le voyage d’un étranger qui affronte une ville en mutation

autre ville, etc. Parfois, et pour des raisons que l’on ignore, des bribes de l’une de ces villes
dissimulées émergent et font face, de manière brutale ou hésitante, parfois sévère et cruelle,
au présent de la nouvelle ville.
Yesterday’s Man est une tentative de faire converger le présent et le passé, et même un
avenir inconnu.
E Yesterday’s Man is the result of the first meeting between two theatre-makers, the Lebanese
Rabih Mroué and the Portuguese Tiago Rodrigues. They later met with Tony Chakar, an
architect and writer also from Lebanon, and the Belgian set and lighting designer Thomas
Walgrave (tg STAN).
Yesterday’s Man describes the voyage of a stranger who’s confronted with an ever changing
city, Beirut. The project is based on the hypothesis that every city has another city beneath it,
and below that another and so on. From time to time, and for unknown reasons, fragments of
these hidden cities rise to the surface, confronting the present in the supposedly new city; they
appear brusquely or hesitantly and sometimes with harshness and cruelty.
Yesterday’s Man is an attempt to overlap the present with the past and even with the
unknown future.

N Europa is zonder twijfel het belangrijkste naoorlogse integratieproject. Het is nog steeds
volop in ontwikkeling en het worstelt met een veelheid aan groeipijnen. Maar waar liggen
precies de belangrijkste uitdagingen voor de EU als we buiten de grenzen van Europa kijken?
Welke positie kiest Europa te midden van die globale interdependentie? Welke rol kan
bijvoorbeeld Turkije spelen om Europa te verbinden met het oosten? En wat met Rusland dat
tegelijkertijd zo dichtbij en zo ver weg lijkt.
F L’Europe est sans aucun doute le plus vaste et le plus important projet d’intégration de
l’après-guerre. Elle est toujours en pleine évolution et aux prises avec une multitude de
douleurs de croissance. Mais où se situent donc les plus grands défis de l’UE si nous
observons le monde au-delà des frontières européennes ? Quelle position l’Europe choisit-elle
au milieu de cette interdépendance mondiale ? Comment la Turquie peut-elle, par exemple,
faire office de passerelle entre Occident et Orient ? Et qu’en est-il de la Russie, à la fois et
proche et si lointaine ?
E Europe is without a doubt the most important post-war integration project. It is still in full
development, and struggling with a multitude of growing pains. Where, however, lie precisely
the most important challenges faced by the EU when we look beyond the frontiers of Europe?
What position is Europe choosing amid this global interdependence? What role can be played,
for example, by Turkey to bind Europe with the East? And what about Russia, which appears
at the same time to be both nearby and so far away.

N Op 11 september 2001 zagen mensen over de hele wereld op hun tv-scherm hoe twee
vliegtuigen zich in de torens van het World Trade Center in New York boorden. De
terreurdaad maakte een einde aan de westerse illusie van ongenaakbaarheid en zou de wereld
onherroepelijk veranderen. De Braziliaans-Amerikaanse kunstenaar, vormgever en performer
Ricky Seabra presenteert tijdens het Spoken World festival twee solo’s waarin hij reflecteert
over de gevolgen van deze aanval voor de inwoners en de geschiedenis van de VS.
Seabra is altijd gefascineerd geweest door wolkenkrabbers en vliegtuigen. Toen hij in New
York woonde, was het observatieplatform op de 110de verdieping van het World Trade
Center een van zijn lievelingsplekken in de stad. Maar de glamoureuze, romantische en
futuristische associaties die de plek bij hem opriepen, zijn na 9/11 vervangen door een gevoel
van terreur en kwetsbaarheid.
In Airplanes & Skyscrapers maakt Seabra zijn beelden en herinneringen tastbaar op de
scène via muziek, live animatie en vertellingen. Een virtuele reis doorheen verhalen van
teleurstelling en hoop. De voorstelling ging in première in kc nOna in Mechelen, precies een
jaar na de aanval op het World Trade Center in New York, op 11 september 2002.
F Le 11 septembre 2001, la terre entière a vu sur son écran télévisé deux avions se précipiter
sur les tours jumelles du World Trade Center à New York. Cet acte terroriste a mis un terme à
l’illusion occidentale d’inviolabilité et a changé le monde à tout jamais. Lors du festival
Spoken World, l’artiste, dessinateur et performeur américano-brésilien Ricky Seabra présente
deux solos dans lesquels il réfléchit aux conséquences de ses attaques pour les citoyens et
l’histoire des États-Unis.
Les avions et les gratte-ciel fascinent Seabra depuis toujours. Lorsqu’il vivait à New York,
l’un de ses coins préférés de la ville était la plateforme d’observation au 110e étage du WTC.
Mais après le 11 septembre, les associations prestigieuses, romantiques et futuristes que le
lieu suscitait en lui, ont cédé la place à un sentiment de terreur et de vulnérabilité.
Dans Airplanes & Skyscrapers, les souvenirs et les images de Seabra deviennent tangibles
sur scène grâce à la musique, l’animation en direct et les récits. Un voyage virtuel à travers
des histoires de déception et d’espoir. La première du spectacle a eu lieu au kc nOna à
Malines, le 11 septembre 2002, un an jour pour jour après l’attentat du World Trade Center.
E On 11 September 2001 people all over the world watched on their televisions as two planes
bored their way into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York. This act of
terrorism ended the western illusion of inviolability and changed the world for ever. At the
Spoken World festival the Brazilian-American artist, designer and performer Ricky Seabra
will present two solo performances in which he reflects on the consequences of this attack for
the inhabitants and history of America.
Seabra has always been fascinated by skyscrapers and aeroplanes. When he lived in New
York one of his favourite spots was the observation platform on the 110th floor of the World
Trade Center. However after 9/11 the glamorous, romantic and futuristic associations were
replaced by a sense of terror and vulnerability.
In Airplanes & Skyscrapers Seabra makes his images and memories tangible on stage by
way of music, live animation and storytelling. He takes us on a virtual journey through tales
of disappointment and hope. It opened at the nOna arts centre in Mechelen, exactly one year
after the attack on the World Trade Center in New York, on 11 September 2002.

European Year of Intercultural Dialogue. Celebration of Diversity
An initiative of the European Commission for the Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2008, in
collaboration with Flagey / booking at Flagey
N Op vrijdagavond sluit het Interdependence Day Forum aan bij het ‘Feest van de Diversiteit’
in het kader van het Europees Jaar van de Interculturele dialoog in Flagey. De Europese
Commissie nam het initiatief en wil er de culturele diversiteit en de gemeenschappelijke
waarden die aan de basis liggen van het Europees project mee in de verf zetten.
Bekende persoonlijkheden uit de wereld van de kunsten en de media treden op als
ambassadeurs van dit Jaar. Zij promoten overal in Europa en daarbuiten de interculturele
boodschap en denken zo mee na over de toekomst van Europa. Deze ambassadeurs zullen
elkaar ontmoeten in Flagey tijdens een uniek evenement dat aantoont hoe kunstenaars via hun
creatief werk met elkaar in dialoog kunnen treden.
De feestelijkheden gaan van start op vrijdag met een concert van Jack Martin Händler en
zijn orkest, in het gezelschap van het Turkse pianofenomeen Fazil Say. Zij brengen een
eerbetoon aan de dirigent Bruno Walter.
Jordi Savall zal in gesprek gaan met het publiek na de vertoning van Tous les Matins du
Monde, de Franse film uit 1991 die geregisseerd werd door Alain Corneau en waarvoor Savall
de muziek speelde.

F Le vendredi soir, le Forum de l’Interdépendance se joint à la Fête de la Diversité, qui se
déroule à Flagey dans le cadre de l’Année européenne du Dialogue interculturel. La
Commission européenne en a pris l’initiative pour souligner l’importance de la diversité
culturelle et des valeurs communes qui ont toujours été au cœur du projet européen.
Des personnalités en vue du monde des arts et des médias agissent comme ambassadeurs de
l'année. Ils assurent la promotion du message interculturel à travers l'Europe et au-delà, et
contribuent à la réflexion sur son avenir. Les ambassadeurs se réuniront à Flagey à l’occasion
d’un événement unique en son genre, qui illustrera le dialogue entre les artistes au travers de
performances créatives.
Les festivités débuteront le vendredi autour de l’hommage rendu au chef d’orchestre Bruno
Walter, par Jack Martin Händler et son orchestre, en compagnie du phénomène pianistique
turc, Fazil Say.
Après la projection du film Tous les matins du monde – film français de 1991, réalisé par
Alain Corneau et pour lequel Jordi Savall joua la musique –, Jordi Savall en personne
conversera avec le public.

E On Friday evening, the Interdependence Day Forum links up with the ‘Celebration of
Diversity’ at Flagey in the framework of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue. The
European Commission took the initiative to highlight the cultural diversity and common
values at the basis of the European project.
Well known personalities from the world of the arts and media are ambassadors for this
year. Throughout Europe and beyond, they will be promoting the intercultural message and
thus contributing to reflections on the future of Europe. These ambassadors will meet at
Flagey for a unique event demonstrating how artists can dialogue with one another via their
creative work.
The festivities will start on Friday with a tribute to conductor Bruno Walter by Jack Martin
Händler and his orchestra, in the company of Turkish piano phenomenon Fazil Say.
Jordi Savall will dialogue with the audience after the showing of Tous les Matins du Monde,
the French movie from 1991 directed by Alain Corneau and for which Savall performed the
music.

N In samenwerking met organisaties als Rising Voices / Global Voices, Remedee Foundation,
OneVoice, The Tony Blair Foundation en de LBL Foundation for Children werd een
twintigtal jongeren van over de hele wereld naar Brussel uitgenodigd. Daar werden i.s.m.
Jeugd en Stad, de Vlaamse Jeugdraad, Globelink en de Conseil Général de la Jeunesse nog
eens twintig Belgische jongeren aan toegevoegd.
Op zaterdagochtend debatteren deze jongeren met een aantal van de belangrijkste
gastsprekers van het Interdependence Day Forum. In de namiddag ontmoeten ze de
ambassadeurs van het Europese Jaar van de Interculturele Dialoog.
F En collaboration avec les organisations telles que Rising Voices / Global Voices, Remedee
Foundation, OneVoice, La Fondation Tony Blair et la LBL Foundation for Children, une
vingtaine de jeunes du monde entier ont été invités à Bruxelles, où une vingtaine de jeunes
Belges se joignent à eux grâce à Jeugd en Stad, le Vlaamse Jeugdraad, Globelink et le Conseil
Général de la Jeunesse.
Samedi matin, ces jeunes gens débattront avec certains intervenants importants du Forum de
l’Interdépendance 2008. Dans l’après-midi ils rencontreront les ambassadeurs de l’Année
Européenne du Dialogue Interculturel.

N Empire, Love to Love You, Baby (2004) is een komisch-satirisch relaas over de
oorlogsgekte die meteen na 9/11 losbrak in de VS.
Seabra (zie ook 12 sep) spit diep in het collectieve geheugen van de populaire cultuur. Met
zijn camera, het internet (lang leve Google Earth!), een pen en papier creëert hij een unieke
wereld waar kritiek en hilariteit hand in hand gaan. Tot u spreekt niet Ricky zelf, maar
Rickyoncé, keizerin van het Amerikaanse Rijk en nietsontziend in haar wil om van de VS een
groot en almachtig imperium te maken. Geflankeerd door haar prinselijke consorten Marvin
Gaye en Jimi Hendrix is ze er op uit haar Rijk te redden, en zo ook de rest van de wereld.
‘Empire is een ontzettend komische lezing/performance over een ernstig, bevreemdend,
soms beangstigend onderwerp: Amerikaans nationalisme.’ (De Standaard)
F Empire, Love to Love You, Baby (2004) est une satire pleine d'humour de la folie guerrière
qui s’est emparée des États-Unis au lendemain du 11 septembre.
Seabra (voir aussi le 12 sep) creuse en profondeur dans la mémoire collective de la culture
populaire. Avec sa caméra, l’Internet (vive Google Earth !), un stylo et du papier, il crée un
univers particulier où l’esprit critique et l’hilarité vont de pair. Ce n’est pas Ricky Seabra qui
s’adresse à vous, mais Rickyoncé, l’impératrice de l’Empire états-unien, décidée à ne reculer
devant rien pour faire des États-Unis un vaste empire omnipotent. Flanquée de ses princes
consorts, Marvin Gaye et Jimi Hendrix, elle est décidée à sauver son empire, et par
conséquent le reste du monde.

that broke out in the US immediately after 9/11.
Seabra delves deep into the collective memory of popular culture. Using his camera, the
Internet (three cheers for Google Earth!), and pen and paper he creates a unique world in
which criticism and hilarity go hand in hand. It is not Ricky himself who addresses the
audience, but Rickyoncé, empress of the American Empire who will stop at nothing to make
the US a great and powerful empire. Flanked by her princely consorts Marvin Gaye and Jimi
Hendrix she is bent on saving her empire and with it the rest of the world.

European Year of Intercultural Dialogue: Celebration of Diversity
An initiative of the European Commission for the Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2008, in

N De tweede dag van het ‘Feest van de Diversiteit’ staat in het teken van de dialoog, met
workshops, rondetafelgesprekken en debatten. Het hoogtepunt is een Oost-West concert:
muzikanten uit de vier windstreken, onder leiding van de eminente viola da gamba-specialist
Jordi Savall en de percussionist Pedro Estevan, nemen ons mee op een unieke reis langs
diverse facetten van de oosterse en westerse muziek.Speciaal voor deze gelegenheid stelt het
Koninklijk Belgisch Filmarchief een aantal films voor rond interculturele dialoog die door
‘ambassadeurs’ werden gemaakt..
De tweedaagse wordt feestelijk afgesloten met een gratis openluchtconcert op het Heilig
Kruisplein.

ateliers, des tables rondes et des débats. Le point d’orgue de la journée est un concert OrientOccident : des musiciens venus des quatre coins du monde, dirigés par l’éminent spécialiste
de la viole de gambe, Jordi Savall, et le percussionniste Pedro Estevan, nous emmènent faire
un voyage exceptionnel à travers la diversité et la richesse de la musique orientale et
occidentale. À cette occasion, la Cinémathèque royale de Belgique présente un certain
nombre de films réalisés par des « ambassadeurs » et ayant trait au dialogue interculturel.
Les deux jours se clôturent sur une note festive, avec un concert gratuit en plein air à la
place Sainte-Croix.

E The second day of the ‘Celebration of Diversity’ has dialogue as theme, with workshops,
round-table discussions and debates. This will culminate in an East-West concert: musicians
from the four corners of the earth, under the direction of eminent viola da gamba specialist
Jordi Savall and percussionist Pedro Estevan, take us on a unique trip through diverse aspects
of eastern and western music. Especially for this occasion, the Royal Belgian Film Archives
will show a number of films around intercultural dialogue created by ‘ambassadors’.
The two-day event will be ceremoniously concluded with a free open-air concert on Heilig
