COMPLIMENTS OF
A Cannes To Remember
annes 2002, a Cannes to
remember, full of surprises,
new made alliances, new
friends, discoveries old and new.
The Business Of Film team would
like to say a big thank you to all the
companies,
particularly
the
independent companies, that
supplied us with interesting items
for our articles. Especially the
Listen and See piece on the cover
two days ago, that allows the
partially blind and the blind to see.
If it were all as simple as the art of
technology for all to SEE, life
would indeed be grand. But… we
congratulate the many small
enterprises which have come to
Cannes to promote their dreams,
their passions, their countries, and
their movies. A big thank you to
our loyal readers, supporters and
advertisers. We endeavour to be

answerable not to financial clout,
but to the philosophy of equal
coverage for all. We hope in that
small measure we have achieved
our aim. This year The Business of
Film introduced a page of news,
reviews and articles in the French
language written by our French
correspondent Olivier KraskerRosen. We hope this will be the
beginning of a series of articles in
different languages in The
Business of Film in the near future.
The Team, Frida de Penanster,
Franck Salvietti, Olivier KraskerRosen, Josephine McDiarmid,
Allison McKenzie, Elizabeth
Joseph and Elspeth Tavares hope
you have all had a great Cannes,
and look forward to being of
service to you in Cannes 2003.
Bon voyage!
E-Motion Picture
n Friday,
May 17,
2002, at
approximately 7
pm, a tremor
shook the Palais
des
Festivals.
Michael Moore The epicenter
was the Lumière Theater. Imagine
the simultaneous roar of the sound
of one thousand bowling lanes. The
cause of this turbulance: 2300
people, 4600 hands, a 15 minute
thundering ovation accompanied by
the expression
of
the
overwhelming emotion of smiles
and tears. Why? For whom?
Michael Moore. A good man who
lives his life as he directs, with such
generosity that it is impossible to
discern if after so much devotion for
the people he still has his own life…
He distributes his life to those who
suffer, who struggle and toil in the
heartbeat of America. Michael
Moore, the director not the World
Trade Organisation chairman
(Michael Moore) has the same
impact as that of a slap on the cheek.
To paraphrase the great Cyrano de
Bergerac
that
defends
his
independance at all cost* “He
traverses the crowds and chattering
groups Make Truth ring bravely out
like clash of spurs!”; he’s got the
Panache too! Bowling For
O
Columbine is Moore’s fourth
movie. He starts from the fact, the
killing at Columbine, he quests for
the primal cause of it, and executes
a sharp image of the the stark reality
of the culture of fear distributed by
the media, that enters like a burglar
into homes, and stimulates paranoia.
This important film is an exhibit of
the “gun nuts nation”. Moore’s
methodology has set the pattern of a
way of expression particularly
disconcerting for all the profiteers
that hide themselves behind the veil
of respectability in bunkers.
Verdict? This reality is above all
fictions, which can create like
dramatic stories, tears, laughter, and
thrills, and furthermore do more for
the salvation of our souls than all the
films depicting fiction. Bowling
For Columbine deserves the
highest award. Tough question for a
festival: Will a jury of creators of
fiction movies give an award to a
documentary? Sursum corda!
(Hearts high!)
*
“All my elegances are within.
I do not prank myself out, puppy-like;
My toilet is more thorough, if less gay;
I would not sally forth--a half-washed-out
Affront upon my cheek--a conscience
Yellow-eyed, bilious, from its sodden sleep,
A ruffled honor,…scruples grimed and dull!
I show no bravery of shining gems.
Truth, Independence, are my fluttering plumes.
'Tis not my form I lace to make me slim,
But brace my soul with efforts as with stays,
Covered with exploits, not with ribbon-knots,
My spirit bristling high like your mustaches,
I, traversing the crowds and chattering groups
Make Truth ring bravely out like clash of spurs!”
Cyrano de Bergerac from Edmond Rostand

COMPETITION
The Pianist
A brilliant Polish pianist, a Jew, is confined in the Warsaw ghetto where he
experiences suffering and humiliation. He escapes deportation and hides in the
ruins of the city. A German officer comes to his aid and helps him to survive.
Irreversible
Irreversible. Because time destroys everything. Because certain acts are
irreparable. Because man is an animal. Because the will to get revenge is a
natural impulse. Because most crimes go unpunished. Because the loss of a
loved one destroys like lightening. Because love is the source of life. Because
premonitions don’t change the course of things. Because time reveals
everything. The worst and the best.

port.
