Arrest

in
ministry
break-in
legal:
Taipei police
Taipei, July 28 (CNA) Taipei City
Police Department said in an investigative report Tuesday that
three reporters who were arrested in the early hours of July
24 were suspected of breaking into the Ministry of Education
complex that night, along with a group of students protesters.
More than 200 people, mostly high school students, began a
protest outside the Ministry of Education (MOE) on July 22
against a series of revisions to school textbooks, which
activists and academics said were Sino-centric and were
carried out with a lack of transparency.
The activists also said the MOE has ignored their requests for
dialogue on the issue.
The protesters demanded that the government drop the revisions
of the curriculum guidelines, which they argued were
“presented from the perspective of Chinese unification.”
Three reporters — Liberty Times photographer Liao Chen-hui (廖振
輝), Coolloud Collective reporter Sung Hsiao-hai (宋小海) and
independent reporter Lin Yu-yu (林雨佑) — were among 33 people
who were taken into custody after students and other
protesters broke into the MOE compound on the night of July
23.
The police said about 200 officers were sent to the scene and
the people found at the minister of education’s office were
all detained.
Pictures posted online showed the reporters climbing ladders
to get into the ministry compound and then taking notes and
taking pictures of student intrusion, the police said.
The pictures also showed the three reporters along with
protesters entering ministry buildings — action that was a
violation of the law because the reporters did not obtain
permission to enter the premises, as required by law,
according to police.
The Zhongzheng First Police Precinct said the media workers
were detained to determine whether they were part to the
protest, but the journalists said they were prevented from
doing their work.
The local watchdog group Taiwan Media Watch on July 24 said
the arrest of the three journalists was a “violation of press
freedom.”
The Association of Taiwan Journalists on July 24 also
condemned the arrest of the journalists as a violation of
press freedom.
It said it was opposed to the actions of the Taipei Police
Department, which had passed the buck to the MOE and
prosecutors after arresting the journalists, who had clearly
identified themselves at the scene.
The association said it will assist the journalists if they
want to take legal action.
Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) said on July 24 he will ask the
police to come up with guidelines to make clear the
responsibilities of the municipal government and the National
Police Agency during big protests.

Europe’s in pole position for
2015 and beyond
It’s never been a better time to
visit Europe, according to ETOA,
the European tourism association
and Forward Keys, traveller data
intelligence. Solid growth in
the first half of the year and positive forward-looking
indicators are being propelled by favourable exchange rates
and quality packages and tours.
The latest European Travel Commission survey of travel trends
in Europe shows the majority of destinations reporting
positive growth in international arrivals and overnights for
the first five months of 2015. There was a strong boost to
arrivals for Europe’s most popular destinations, with Germany
(+5%), Spain (+4%), Italy (+4%) and the UK (+3%) all seeing
solid growth in international arrivals in the run-in to the
peak travel season1.
Airline travel to and from Europe maintained its upwards
momentum in the year-to-date data to April, with Revenue
Passenger Kilometres growing by 4.8% compared to the same
period in 20142. For hoteliers in Europe, occupancy rates grew
solidly, with gains of 2.3% in the first five months of the
year slightly ahead of those seen globally3.
Looking ahead, over the year as a whole the expectations are
that European inbound tourism will keep pace with the global
forecast of 3%-4%, which could result in European arrivals
passing the 600 million milestone1.
This positive picture is supported by trends in airline
reservations to Europe from long haul source markets. Forward
Keys, which provides traveller intelligence based on bookings
processed by online and offline travel agencies worldwide,
through the leading Global Distribution Systems, reported a
3.6% increase in air bookings to Europe for the first half of
the year. Its data also suggests that the upwards trend is set
to continue into the second half of the year. On-the-book
reservations in mid-July for the remainder of the year showed
an 8.3% increase on the same period in 2014. Forward
reservations from Europe’s main North American market are
looking very solid (+7.1%), while further strong momentum from
Asian source markets is very evident with a 16% boost in
bookings from North East Asia, while the Rest of Asia is 11%
higher than the same period last year.
Tom Jenkins, CEO of ETOA commented “This is exchange rate
driven. Both US and Chinese visitors are getting about 22%
more Euros than this time last year; Indian tourists are
enjoying 17% higher spending power, while those from the Gulf
have as much as 25% more money in their pockets.
At the moment we have more people, but fewer dollars. What is
intriguing is that the growth in arrivals appears to be less
than the decline in the value of the Euro. There is a time lag
in these fluctuations: the perception of Europe as being
comparatively inexpensive takes a while to feed into bookings.
Long-haul visitors are naturally slower to react. In the UK,
which has seen a 12% increase in the value of the pound
against the Euro, bookings are running 15% up. So, for the
Eurozone, the future should be even brighter.”
Olivier Jager, CEO, ForwardKeys said “Europe is showing every
sign of having a very strong tourist season this summer. All
top ten European cities are showing excellent growth in
forward bookings as of mid-July. The only exception is
Frankfurt but that is a deceptively negative portrayal because
this year it is not benefitting from its biennial trade fair,
Automechanika, which is a big draw for international
visitors.”
ROC victory over Japan led to
freedom, independence for
Chinese: Hau
Taipei, June 14 (CNA) The Republic
of China’s victory over Japan in the Second Sino-Japanese War
helped Taiwan return to the motherland and that is why the ROC
on Taiwan today can enjoy democracy and prosperity, according
to former Premier Hau Pei-tsun (郝柏村).
Hau was a former soldier who fought in the eight-year Second
Sino-Japanese War, the Chinese Civil War (1927-1950), and the
823 Artillery Bombardment against Kinmen in 1958 after the ROC
government retreated to Taiwan in 1949.
In his 2011 book titled “Hau Pei-tsun’s Comments on Chiang
Kai-shek’s Diaries,” the former premier analyzed the factors
that contributed to the Kuomintang’s (KMT) loss of mainland
China in the civil war.
He said the KMT was defeated in the civil war because of its
lack of grassroots support and Chiang’s failure to reflect on
why the party had lost political ground to the communists
after the Eight-Year Resistance War against the Japanese.
Nonetheless, Hau wrote, Chiang must be highly commended for
leading the ROC to victory over Japan in the eight year war,
thus bringing freedom and peace to the Chinese people.
After the ROC government retreated to Taiwan with large
amounts of national treasure and gold in 1949, Chiang did his
utmost to safeguard the country, Hau said in the book.
Chiang was truly a patriotic Chinese nationalist who never
gave up, even in unfavorable circumstances, Hau wrote.
At the book launch in 2011, Hau lamented the fact that when
the ROC government retreated to Taiwan in 1949, Chiang’s image
plunged from that of a liberator of the Chinese people in 1945
to that of a public enemy in mainland China.
Against such a backdrop, the truth behind the Eight-Year War
of Resistance against Japan has been buried, Hau said. In
Taiwan, Chiang’s image as a protector of the people was
degraded to that of a villain upon the burgeoning of Taiwanese
democracy in the late 1980s, largely as a result of his part
in the 228 Incident of 1947, Hau said.
Liu Wei-kai (劉維開), a professor at the Department of History at
National Chengchi University, said at a recent event that the
publication of Chiang’s diaries offered some insights into his
internal conflicts during the eight-year war against Japan.
Liu read out parts of Chiang’s dairies at the event, which was
held at Shih Shin University to mark the 70th anniversary of
the end of World War II.
Chiang’s diaries revealed that he was deeply disappointed over
what he saw as the international community’s cool and slow
response to China’s need for assistance after the Second SinoJapanese War broke out, but he was encouraged by the Chinese
people’s strength and resilience in the fight against the
Japanese, Liu said.
That the ROC fought Japan as a sovereign state during the
Second Sino-Japanese War is an indisputable truth that is
written in mainstream history, Liu contended.
But after the establishment of the People’s Republic of China
in mainland China in 1949 (after the ROC retreated to Taiwan
earlier that same year), the Chinese communists have failed to
address this part of history appropriately, he said.
However, evidence collected from historical records and
documents have fully demonstrated that it was the KMT-led ROC
government that fought the Eight-Year War of Resistance
against Japan, he noted, adding that the unyielding resolve
Chiang showed during the war is very remarkable.

Hung Hsiu-chu passes KMT
presidential primary polls
Taipei,
June
14
(CNA)
Deputy
Legislative Speaker Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱) passed the 30 percent
threshold in the ruling Kuomintang’s (KMT) three presidential
primary polls on Sunday, with an average approval rating of
46.203 percent.
Hung, who can now be nominated by the KMT to run in the
presidential election that will be held in January next year,
thanked her supporters during a press conference at the KMT’s
headquarters.
“This is only the first step,” Hung said, adding that she will
now move forward with greater confidence to secure the
nomination.
Hung said she expects the KMT’s national party convention on
July 19 to formally pick her as the party’s presidential
nominee and that a presidential election between “two women”
would mark a new page in the development of democracy in
Taiwan.
The polls were organized by three consultancies, Trengo,
Statinc and the United Daily News, each of which was required
to collect more than 1,200 valid samples.
The polls measured Hung’s approval rating running alone and
against Democratic Progressive Party presidential candidate
Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文). The final results were an average of the
two scenarios in the three polls.
KMT Vice Chairman Hau Lung-bin (郝龍斌) said the high approval
rating revealed that Hung had wide support among the public.
“Hung’s insistence on throwing her hat into the ring and her
position on the future of our party has encouraged many
supporters. We are proud of her,” Hau said.
Hau said he would convene a meeting of the nomination and
auditing committee on June 16 to confirm the outcome of the
polls before submitting the results to the KMT’s Central
Standing Committee on June 17.

frequent flyer to develop the tutorials: one for the ground
and one that can be followed in-flight.
Each 15-minute program, developed exclusively for SkyTeam and
its 20 members, features a series of yoga stretches and
breathing techniques that are easy to follow, regardless of
what passengers are wearing or their class of travel.
Customers flying on 18 of SkyTeam’s 20 members will find the
Yoga in-flight video offered as part of the airline’s Inflight
Entertainment. The tutorials are also available on the SkyTeam

Benetton céde à la pression
et renonce à l’angora
Le géant italien de la mode
s’engage à interdire l’angora à
la suite d’une action coordonnée
des affiliées internationales de
PETA
disponibles.
KMT’s Hung dismisses rumor
she will quit presidential
race
Taipei, June 8 (CNA) Deputy Legislative
Speaker Hung Hsiu-chu’s office on Monday dismissed as
“insulting voters’ intelligence” an allegation that she will
quit the ruling Kuomintang’s (KMT) June 11 primary for next
year’s presidential election.
“Hung Hsiu-chu will never quit the primary,” said a statement
issued by her office in response to a Facebook post by TV
pundit Clara Chou, who quoted opposition Democratic
Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Tsai Huang-liang alleging
that Hung will make way for two KMT heavyweights to enter the
presidential race.
Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng, who a day earlier had
revealed that he will not shun being drafted by the KMT as its
presidential candidate, will pair with KMT Chairman Eric Chu
to vie for another four-year presidential term for the ruling
party, Tsai was quoted.
In exchange, Wang will step down as speaker, to be replaced by
Hung, who will be promised a new four-year term next year,
according to the FB post.
Hung is to face a two-day public opinion poll June 12-13 to
decide whether he qualifies to stand for the KMT in the
January 16, 2016 presidential election.
At this juncture in time, said Hung’s statement, rumors are
never in short supply, but Tsai’s allegation is especially
farcical and ridiculous — so much that it insults the
electorate’s intelligence.
If Tsai indeed has spread such a rumor as exposed by Chou, he
should make an apology to Hung on June 11, said the statement.
It accused any such rumor mongers of attempting to disrupt the
KMT’s polling procedure — an important process in the party’s
presidential primary.

New
Service
Allows
the
Airlines to Expand Their
Joint Business
FORT WORTH, Texas –
American Airlines and
Qantas Airways plan
to
significantly
expand their joint
business by adding new service between the U.S. and Australia.
New routes between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and
Sydney Airport (SYD), operated by American Airlines, and
between San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and SYD,
operated by Qantas, will provide customers with expanded
options when traveling between the two regions.
Through this enhanced alliance, American will begin operating
a daily, nonstop flight between LAX and SYD on Dec. 17, 2015,
further strengthening its global network and its world-class
LAX hub. Beginning Dec. 20, 2015 Qantas will begin operating
service between SYD and SFO, expanding the airlines’ joint
network to another key market for business and leisure
customers. Services will initially operate on peak days and
ramp up to six times per week in January 2016. Pending
regulatory approvals, this expansion represents the natural
evolution of the collaboration between American and Qantas,
with revenue-sharing and other agreements that provide the
airlines with a platform for closer commercial ties and an
even more seamless customer experience on routes between North
America and Australia/New Zealand. The closer and more
integrated relationship also provides opportunities for future
growth into trans-Pacific markets not currently served by
either airline, such as New Zealand.
“Qantas
has
been
a
fantastic
partner through oneworld and our joint business relationship,
and strengthening those ties has provided us with a solid
foundation to introduce American-operated flights into the
Australian region,” said Doug Parker, chairman and CEO of
American Airlines. “Our customers have asked us to expand to
important business destinations across the Pacific, and flying
our flagship aircraft, the Boeing 777-300ER, to Sydney will
provide another world-class travel experience from our key
gateway at LAX.”
“For over 20 years, we’ve worked in partnership with American
to give our customers the best network on both sides of the
Pacific,” said Alan Joyce, CEO of Qantas Group. “We are
excited to take the alliance to a new level and expand our
services to new destinations including San Francisco –
Australia’s biggest unserved direct corporate destination. We
are seeing strong growth in numbers of visitors to Australia
and look forward to carrying more travellers from the U.S.
across our extensive domestic and international network in the
South Pacific.”
American
and
Qantas
Through their joint business,
provide increased connectivity to
destinations beyond their key gateways. Customers traveling
from Australia can access more than 150 destinations
throughout North America on American’s extensive network from
Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles and San Francisco. This
includes transcontinental service to New York’s John F.
Kennedy Airport (JFK) from LAX and SFO on the only true threeclass aircraft flying those routes, the Airbus A321T. From
LAX, customers can connect on to more than 50 destinations.
American has added service to seven new destinations from its
LAX hub over the past year, including Atlanta, Belize,
Edmonton, Guadalajara, San Antonio, Tampa and Vancouver.
Customers traveling from North America have access to nearly
60 additional destinations throughout Australia and New
Zealand when connecting from Qantas trans-Pacific routes from
Sydney.
American’s new service between Los
Angeles and Sydney will be operated with the state-of-the-art,
three-class Boeing 777-300ER. The aircraft features all-aisle
access, fully lie-flat seats and a walk-up bar in the premium
cabins; Main Cabin Extra seating provides more legroom; and
all seats feature personal, in-seat entertainment screens with
up to 250 movies, over 180 TV programs and more than 350 audio
selections, international Wi-Fi capability and universal AC
power outlets and USB ports.
Qantas will operate its service between Sydney and San
Francisco with a reconfigured Boeing 747-400 that has the same
style interiors found on its flagship Airbus A380 aircraft. It
features the award-winning, fully-flat Skybed designed by Marc
Newson in Business Class, custom-designed seats with ergonomic
cushioning in Economy Class and the latest inflight technology
with large in-seat screens in every cabin offering more than
1,500 entertainment options. Qantas’ SYD-LAX route will
continue to operate with the A380.

/PRNewswire/
—
The
experience at Los Angeles International Airport’s Terminal 5
today reflects the style of the city and its travelers as
Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) unveils the completion of a threeyear terminal-wide refurbishment, including the airline’s
first private check-in lounge, Delta ONE at LAX. The $229million Delta project was completed in partnership with Los
Angeles World Airports (LAWA) and the City of Los Angeles.
“We’re fast on our way to becoming the airline of choice
in Los Angeles by understanding what moves L.A. – its most
prominent industries, its most desired destinations, and its
discerning customers’ required amenities for travel,” said
Delta President Ed Bastian. “Our investments in T5 now offer
Angelenos a more premium airport experience, from check-in to
take-off.”
Since 2009, Delta has been the fastest-growing carrier at
LAX* and today offers flights to the most important cities for
L.A.’s entertainment, technology, health care, and automotive
industries. The facility enhancements at Terminal 5 are part
of the airline’s investment at LAX as Delta continues to grow
its network in this global gateway.
“These upgrades to Terminal 5 are
transforming visitors’ first and last impressions of Los
Angeles,” said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. “This
investment by Delta is the latest in our now more than $8
billionoverhaul of LAX. Whether by upgrading nearly all of our
terminals, bringing in ridesharing services to pick up
passengers, or connecting the nation’s second-busiest airport
to rail, we’re making LAX a world-class airport befitting a
city that is the global capital of creativity, innovation and
possibility. I am thrilled that Delta is growing its presence
here in Los Angeles.”
Delta ONE at LAX provides the most innovative premium check-in
experience at LAX of any carrier and is consistent with
Delta’s other premium offerings on-board and at the airport.
Customers flying in Delta One enter the terminal through a
dedicated curbside entrance, leading to a private, modern
check-in lounge with personalized luggage check, high-design
atmosphere, and a refreshment bar. Customers also access a
dedicated security checkpoint directly from the Delta ONE at
LAX lounge.
Additionally, a renovated Sky Club offers more space and an
improved customer experience, including 100 additional seats;
new shower suites and renovated bathrooms; an updated food
area with cafe seating; and new furnishings and fixtures. New
restaurants and shops in Terminal 5 feature celebrity chefs
and retail brand names that reflect the cuisine, culture and
lifestyle of Los Angeles.
“Delta has made it a priority to
build our presence in Los Angeles, and our improvements at LAX
demonstrate the commitment of our award-winning employees to
enhancing the travel experience not only in the air, but also
on the ground,” said Ranjan Goswami, Delta Vice President –
Sales, West. “From new food and beverage concepts throughout
the terminal to the premium offering at Delta ONE at LAX,
we’re creating a range of experiences to cater to our domestic
and international travelers visiting LAX.”
Other Terminal 5 enhancements include new jet bridges; a
renovated Sky Priority lobby; an expanded ticketing lobby and
four additional security screening checkpoints; and new
baggage carousels and international baggage recheck
facilities.
“As a proud supporter of expanding operations in a socially
and environmentally responsible manner, I applaud Delta for
continuing to grow through operational excellence and for
providing the best services for travelers in Los Angeles and
around the world,” said Los Angeles City Councilmember Tom
LaBonge, chair of the city’s Trade, Commerce & Tourism
Committee.
“Delta has made investment and growth in the Los Angeles area
a huge priority,” said Los Angeles City Councilmember Mike
Bonin, who represents LAX and surrounding neighborhoods. “I
greatly appreciate Delta’s commitment to helping LAX modernize
into a world-class airport this city can be proud of.”
In coordination with these completed enhancements, Delta is
launching a new integrated marketing campaign customized
to Los Angeles — dubbed “LAX to LUX” — to show Los
Angeles travelers how Delta’s thoughtful investments, touches
of luxury and attention to detail are setting a new standard
for customers traveling in and out of LAX. The centerpiece of
the campaign is LAXtoLUX.com, a digital hub where customers
can learn more about Delta’s premium offerings in LAX from
curb to claim.
Delta’s seat capacity in Los Angeles has increased more than
100 percent since 2009 * , and the airline has significantly
expanded its Los Angeles network over the last year, adding
service to new destinations including Shanghai, China, which
