SWEN NATER: SEVEN FEET OF MOTIVATION! INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION KEYNOTE SPEAKER FRIDAY, JULY 1 – FIRST BUSINESS SESSION Swen Nater is one of basketball’s best rebounders and has records to prove it. Although he’s seven-feet tall and played at the highest level of his sport, he is down to earth and understands where people are in their journey toward selfdevelopment. He motivates people to action. His goal is not to create a temporary emotional lift, but rather to help each “audience participant” create a new personal plan. Highlyentertaining, Swen’s presentations are flavored by tasteful humor, poetry (some his own), and powerful quotes. “ FOR OVER THIRTY YEARS, SWEN NATER HAS BEEN A HIGHLY SOUGHT-AFTER MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER AND HAS PRESENTED HIS ENERGETIC, HUMOROUS, AND POWERFUL MESSAGES AROUND THE WORLD FOR CORPORATIONS, SCHOOLS, AND VARIOUS ORGANIZATIONS. “ FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT WWW.SWENNATER.ME Quebec_Program.indd 3 6/16/16 2:51 PM TABLE OF CONTENTS Welcome Letters........................................ 3-8 Smoking Policy..................................... 28 Daily Activities Schedule........................ 9-12 Youth Information................................ 28 Tuesday.....................................................9 2015-2016 Board of Directors........... 29-30 Wednesday..............................................9 2015-2016 Vice Presidents........................31 Thursday................................................. 10 Friday........................................................ 11 Convention Committees...........................32 Saturday.................................................. 12 99th annual International Convention Albuquerque, New Mexico, US...............33 Québec Map.................................................. 15 Optimist Conventions.......................... 34-35 Hilton Québec Diagrams.......................16-19 Québec Experience...............................37-51 Québec City Convention Centre Diagrams............ 20-22 Notes (Optimist Creed)..............................52 Ticket Information..................................... 23 2016 Québec Experience Training Participation Form Youth Program Information..................... 23 English......................................................53 General Information........................... 24-28 French......................................................56 Appreciation Luncheon...................... 24 Attire....................................................... 24 Canadian Children’s Optimist Foundation............................. 24 Club President-Elect/ Lt. On behalf of the 85,000 adult and youth Members of Op.timist International, I am p.leased to welcome you to Québec City for the 98th Op.timist International Convention! It is fitting that Québec City—which was founded in 1608—is known as a “City of Exp.lorers.” We will have the op.p.ortunity to not only exp.lore one of the most beautiful and historic cities in North America, but we will also have the op.p.ortunity to “Rediscover Op.timism” with friends from around the world. This year’s International Convention p.romises to be both “fun and worthwhile” as we share ideas, p.articip.ate in quality educational workshop.s, decide imp.ortant issues, visit the House of Op.timism, and enjoy fellowship. with one another. We will also have the p.rivilege of listening to motivational sp.eakers, including our keynote sp.eaker, Swen Nater, who p.layed for the legendary basketball coach John Wooden at UCLA—where he won two national champ.ionship.s—before beginning a successful p.rofessional career. On Friday, July 1, we will have the op.p.ortunity to celebrate Canada Day. Of course, we will also be able to enjoy the wonderful bistros and shop.s located on the cobblestone streets within the walls of Old Québec City. So, it is my sincere hope that you will find the convention activities, as well as the city, to be memorable. I trust that these events will encourage each of us to strengthen our local Clubs and to share our Op.timism with others as we strive each day to bring out the very BEST in Youth, in our Communities, and in Ourselves—Right Here, Right Now! Yours in Op.timism, BRINGING OUT IN YOUTH, IN OUR COMMUNITIES, AND IN OURSELVES. RIG ! HT H OW ERE, RIGHT N Dave Bruns Op.timist International President, 2015-2016 -3Quebec_Program.indd 5 6/16/16 2:51 PM Optimists Friends, The Quebec convention is the time to rediscover our Op.timism. Join me and the other Op.timists from the St. Lawrence Region to come together, and to mostly have some fun while p.ursuing our mission to bring out the best in kids, in ourselves, and in our communities…right here right now! You will no doubt notice that the St. Lawrence Region does things in a big way and in its own way. Thank you again for everything that you do. I am very p.roud to be an Op.timist and am very eager that together, Optimists from everywhere discover the magnificent city of Quebec, one of the oldest cities in North America, the only walled city north of Mexico. Together, let’s rediscover Op.timism, in our unique way of doing things differently! Luc Dubois, Vice-President 2015-2016 St.Lawrence Region -4Quebec_Program.indd 6 6/16/16 2:51 PM Optimist Members and Friends, I feel p.rivileged to be the Governor of the Host District and am very p.roud of the commitment of the members of my District. They exp.ressed a p.rofound desire to receive you. This convention is undoubtedly the occasion to p.rove to you that Quebec is the city of Op.timism and we want to assure you that you will all be warmly welcomed during this convention. We wish you an agreeable stay, there is so much to see in our beautiful Quebec City, and so much to learn and to share between Op.timist members during this convention. Welcome to Quebec City, welcome to the heart of the East Quebec District/North Shore District, welcome to the St. Lawrence Region and welcome to Canada. Michel Dup.uis Governor East Quebec/North Shore District 2015-2016 deqrn.org -5Quebec_Program.indd 7 6/16/16 2:51 PM Dear Optimists, On behalf of all the volunteers who have worked so hard to make this an outstanding International Convention, I invite you to “Rediscover Optimism!” Quebec City is a beautiful city, full of history and interesting places to visit. As Convention Chair, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our 98th annual International Convention. I encourage you to attend the Opening Ceremony in addition to both Business Sessions where you can make your Club’s wishes known on constitutional issues and learn about the current state of our organization. There are several new and exciting things happening at the convention this year! The House of Optimist is open to the Public and will feature TIP Talks (15-minute educational seminars covering a variety of personal development topics); local businesses from the Isle of Orleans exhibiting their wares; and Braggers Hall where you can learn about new project ideas. If you are a First Timer, take part in the new Convention Buddy program. You will pair up with a “seasoned” convention goer, to help show you the ropes, and experience everything the convention has to offer. Workshops are offered on Thursday. I hope you attend these unique training opportunities to improve your knowledge and to learn how to be a more effective leader and impactful Optimist. The format of the International Convention will allow you to enjoy the activities and to experience all that Quebec City has to offer. Get engaged with the activities, reconnect with old friends, meet new Optimists from all over the world, and have a wonderful time at #OI2016! Welcome to Quebec! Janet Lloyd Janet Lloyd 98th Optimist International Convention Chair, 2015-2016 -6Quebec_Program.indd 8 6/16/16 2:51 PM Dear participants, The Optimist International Convention is a perfect place to socialize and exchange with people who share the same philosophy of life. What a wonderful opportunity to increase our knowledge and strategies to further our personal development and mobilize the members. Rediscovering Optimism will allow you to reawaken the reasons you became a member of this international organization which promises to inspire the best in kids. I would like to thank my whole committee and the people who so generously helped to make this convention in Quebec possible. But a special thank you to all of you here: without you, we could not succeed with this memorable meeting in Quebec. I look forward to meeting you, Claire Labrèche Claire Labrèche, President of the Host Committee -7Quebec_Program.indd 9 6/16/16 2:51 PM MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR OF QUÉBEC CITY It is a tremendous p.leasure for me to welcome you on the occasion of the Op.timist International Annual Convention, which is being held in our city for the very first time. The cradle of French-sp.eaking civilization in North America, and a World Heritage Treasure, Québec City is p.roud of the rich heritage that it has been able to p.reserve and make p.rosp.er for future generations. Today a vibrant and dynamic cap.ital city, it is always p.leased to welcome p.eop.le and organizations, such as yourselves, who devote themselves generously and p.assionately to insp.iring the best in our youth. This year’s Presidential theme expands the mission statement to “By providing hope and positive vision, Optimists Bring Out the Best in our Youth, in our Communities and in Ourselves”. Everyone can see how the mission statement and this year’s theme describes WHAT we do in our clubs to improve our communities, yet we find it difficult to explain to potential members WHY they should join our clubs. This workshop will focus on WHY we do what we do and how to communicate that to potential members. Optimist International Leadership Development Committee Co-Chair, Mark Weinsoff, and Committee Member, Cherryl Thames, believe we will do a better job of recruiting new members when we stop focusing on WHAT we do and HOW we do it and begin focusing on WHY we do it. A list of membership benefits that they and others have been using successfully over the last two years to recruit new members will be provided.
