journey into the fascinating worlds
of fashion and beauty.
There are short courses in Fashion
Photography, Garment Construction,
Pattern Design, Fashion Design, Make-up
and Adobe® Illustrator & Photoshop.
They are presented at our campus in
Johannesburg over a period of
20 Saturday mornings.

SHORT COURSE
After successful completion of the Garment Construction short
course you’ll be able to make a range of basic items of apparel
and understand the basic principles that underscore garment
construction. The course will give you the grounding to continue
developing your garement construction knowledge and skills on
your own, perhaps leading to an exciting new career.
LISOF and its programmes are accredited by the Council on Higher
Education and registered on the South African Qualifications
Authority’s National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

The part-time Garment Construction short
course curriculum includes the following:
Unit 1: Introduction. Students are taught
about basic sewing equipment and how to
use it correctly. Learn about fabrics, including
warp, weft, bias and selvage, and basic pattern
information and methods of laying out, marking,
pinning and cutting fabric.
Unit 2: Machines and Sewing. Learn how to
correctly identify the domestic sewing machine’s
components. You’ll be guided through step-bystep methods for using both domestic sewing
machines and overlockers. You’ll be coached
through practical manoeuvring exercises; open
and closed straight seams; edge stitching; foot
stitching; and twin stitching and overlocking
finishes.
Unit 3: Faced Edges, Corners, Curves and
Darts. You’ll be introduced to fusible interlining
and the operations of the fusing press and
coached through straight-faced edges; faced inner
and outer corners; corner and curved panel seams;
and single-ended and double-ended darts.
Unit 4: Pressed Pleats and Yokes. Students
are introduced to and guided in the preparation
of written orders of construction. Various skills
around pleat construction are also introduced and
developed, as well as effective machine-finished
hemming techniques.
Unit 5: A Skirt. Learn how to read a pattern
set and prepare a more complex order of
construction. You’ll be guided in the recognition of
pattern parts in order to assemble a more complex
sample and learn how to apply fusible interlining
to a waistband. You’ll also be taught fold-on-fold
machine stitched hem finishing, patch-pocket
template execution and finishing and attachment
of the patch-pocket to the garment.
Unit 6: Gathered Skirt. Learn to make
machine buttonholes and gathers using a number
of gathering methods. Learn about gathering
stitch length and drawing up excess fabric; built
on facings; stitching on buttons; hand felled hems;
and method #2 of waistband attachment.
Unit 7: Pockets, Belt loops and Drawstrings.
You’ll be coached in the following: safari pocket;
bellow pocket; side-seam insert pocket; curved
insert pocket with separate facings; angled
insert pocket with decorative facings; belt loops;
drawstrings and casings.
Unit 8: Collars and Front Finishes. Students
are coached in techniques for the Mandarin collar
without facings and the Bowling collar with neck
facings.
Unit 9: Shirt Cuff and Bound Opening. Learn
bias cutting and binding methods as well as shirt
cuff finishes and bound slit openings.
Unit 10: Bodice with Set-in Sleeve and Collar.
Learn how to set a sleeve and construct a bodice.
Techniques include constructing the princess
panel line, darts, bowling collar, front and back
facings, machine topstitched hem, and set-in
sleeve with turn-up hem finish. Students are also
trained to use the free arm of a domestic sewing
machine.
Unit 11: Zip Openings. Learn to attach and use
the correct zip feet on a domestic sewing machine
and be trained to insert an invisible zip, a lapped
zip and a centred zip.

The part-time Garment Construction short course
presents material that straddles NQF Levels 4 and 5 and
is therefore accessible to high school students (Grade
10 or 16 years). However, it is better suited to post-high
school (Grade 12) and adult students.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
•
You’ll need your own domestic sewing machine
and basic sewing consumables (fabric, cottons,
scissors, straight pins etc.
•
The language of recruitment, admission,
administration, facilitation, learning and
assessment at LISOF is English.
•
Bursaries are not available for short courses.
•
Since LISOF’s full-time programmes are
accredited by the Council on Higher Education,
these part-time short courses, drawn from the
full-time curricula, enjoy the same accreditation
status. However, they are not and cannot
be registered on the National Qualifications
Framework (NQF).
•
You will receive a Certificate of Completion
upon delivery of the prescribed tasks
(assessment events). Tasks (assessment events)
must meet minimum requirements according to
the prescribed criteria and must be conducted
according to LISOF’s general assessment
policies.
•
The Garment Construction short course
does not carry international recognition. The
recognition that you gain is from the body of
work that you produce during the course.
•
International students are required to secure a
study permit to study and reside legally in South
Africa before applying to study at LISOF.
