Dear Carl,
Out of your many fascinating stories in four
languages on CARL’S CORNER relating to racism
in America, can you give us one concrete
example where your light skin multi-racial
children were victimized by the system?

MY ANSWER
Dear “Name Withheld”.
I know that you are of Haitian descent. I will
give you an example where my four multi-racial
children, not black in skin color, suffered from
racism in reverse in the late sixties and early
seventies in Queens, New York.
We lived in a white middle-class neighborhood,
predominantly Jewish in Jamaica, Queens, New
York. My children attended the neighborhood
school which was at a walking distance from
my home. My children were used to that
elementary school and my then 11 year old son
(who perished in a boat accident the following year)
even had a part in the musical school version of
the Jewish play FIDDLER ON THE ROOF relating to
Tsarist Russia in 1905 with an edict that evicted
the Jews from their village. Ironically, my wife is
of non-Jewish-Russian-Polish descent on her
mother’s side and Franco-American Indian on
her father’s side.
In the late sixties and early seventies, the
political football pro-integration of busing white
children to black schools and the reverse came
full blast in Queens, New York. My “white”
children, none-the-less of Haitian descent, were
ordered transferred to integrate black schools in
the Black elementary schools of Jamaica, N.Y.
In addition to this inconvenience of uprooting
them from their neighborhood, they had to
endure being called “vanilla pudding” and
other derogatory names by black children who
had been themselves victims of racism in
caucasian society.
Any type of racism is certainly a curse on
humanity and eventually we all pay the price.
Homo sapiens have a long way to go in race
relations and hopefully Barack Obama will be a
positive force in the daily struggle for tolerance.
Hope springs eternal. Moving on.

They surged into the grimy streets around the factory:
first scores, then hundreds, then more than a
thousand, as word spread and tension loaded the
stale, grey air. The boldest overturned a police van
and smashed up motorcycles, then tore through the
building destroying computers and equipment. The
mood was exhilarated, angry and frightened.
"It happened so quickly ... There were maybe 500
involved and another 1,000 watching them. People
were yelling: 'It's good to smash'," said a witness.
But the riot late last year at the Kai Da factory in
Dongguan, amid the grim industrial sprawl of the
Pearl River Delta, was not an isolated incident. It was
one of tens of thousands of protests, many erupting
from the same mixture of economic grievances,
resentment of police and swirling rumor.
The numbers have been climbing steadily for years.
But as the Chinese New Year dawns and the global
economic crisis deepens, the government fears that
mass unrest could challenge its control of the
country, threatening a communist regime that has
embraced capitalism with spectacular results.
Hundreds of millions who have travelled home for
their annual family reunion have little to celebrate.

Dear Family, Friends, Colleagues:
It is with deep sadness that on behalf of the family I inform
you of the death of Jon's sister, Norma Hope Robertson.
Ironically and incomprehensibly -- for someone who was so
health oriented and lived such a 'temperate' life! -- we lost
Norma to Lung Cancer on early Sunday morning January
18. For us Xtians we find a degree of serenity in this beautiful
metaphore of the resurrection -- little wonder that Mahler
was so inspired to composed his stirring masterpiece "The
Resurrection!" We sincerely appreciate the comfort and
expression of kindness, warmth and sympathy emanating
from those who have already learned of our lost.
Norma's life was that of the "unsung" generous people that
cross and bless our paths silently. Although a "no-nonsense"
and assertive person, she felt more comfortable as a "force
in the background". Her generous spirit was ever ready to
ease the plight of the suffering and the sick. As a young
nurse, she worked for over 20 years with the Los Angeles
County's Juvenile Court. Then she embarked as a volunteer
for an extraordinary year of service in the remote countryside of Nigeria [Africa] joining the tireless and
commendable medical work of Dr. Samuel Deshay and his
wife-nurse-partner Bernice. They aawere life-long friends of
Norma.
After her return from Africa, she was soon to be named
on the Governor's Special Medical Task Team. As a
" Surveyor" she inspected and accredited Hospitals,
Nursing Homes, Old Age Homes. Her professional
conscience had a simple guide-line: "It could be my
mother in there". Fortunately, "mèmère" who lived
passed 95 years of age, never experienced this situation.
Again, Norma thought it time to “retire”. But, she was
called by the Kaiser Medical Concern to be part of their
Administrative Team in order to insure compliance with
the expected medical standards of the State.
Those of you who have known Norma throughout the
years and visited or sojourned at the family home in Los
Angeles or Redlands know of her warmth and charming
hospitality.
She was always ready to enjoy and share humor and a
good laugh, especially with her most beloved brother Jon.
Nonetheless, you also know her to have been a very
private person. The family will honor her and her wishes
in having a very private grave site enterrement on
Monday morning, February 9, 2009. However, for those
who wish to celebrate her life’s passage on this earth
with us, the family will be hosting an open-house
reception at the home from 12:30 pm.: 449 Golden West

In lieu of flowers or other gestures of sympathy, the
family would prefer that a donation be made to
Foundation Hope for Haiti*. Throughout the years FHH/

Children’s Hospital [TB & AIDS], Healing Hands for Haiti
[the Handicaps], MUCI’s Pharmacy Co-op, Special Small
Business Loans for Women, and Scholarships for young
children. FHH is grateful for her caringness.
We seize this opportunity to also wish you a Blessed,
Healthy and Peaceful 2009, we ask you to keep
remembering the family in your prayers.

bureau afin d’y laisser entrer des énergies nouvelles.
Choisis le petit-déjeuner d’un roi, mange le midi comme un
prince, et dîne le soir comme un mendiant.
Regarde le ciel au moins une fois par jour pour te rappeller
de l’immensité et de la beauté du monde qui t’entoure.
Rêve davantage lorsque tu es éveillée.
Alimente-toi du fruit des arbres et des plantes.
La vie est trop courte pour t’ennuyer ou détester quelqu’un.
Ne te prends pas trop au sérieux.
Fais la paix avec ton passé, ainsi tu ne ruineras pas ton
présent.
Il n’est pas nécessaire d’avoir toujours raison dans toutes
les discussions.
Ne compare pas ta vie à celle des autres ; tu n’as vraiment
qu’une vague idée de ce que fut la leur.
Personne n’est responsable de ton bonheur, sauf toi-même.
Rappelle-toi que tu n’as pas entièrement contrôle sur ce qui
t’arrive, mais sur ce que tu en fais.
Ce que les autres pensent de toi n’est pas de ton ressort.
Défais-toi des choses qui ne te sont plus utiles, les
mauvaises et même les bonnes.

Mon cher Carl,
Le COIN DE CARL du mardi 27 Janvier 2009 dans
sa partie anglaise nous a fait deux précieux
cadeaux. Je me réfère aux articles d’Andrew M.
Manis et de Jennifer Bréa de commune
tendance, qui font honneur à leur vision d'une
Amérique libèré de son racisme désuet en
offrant à Obama le fauteuil présidentiel de la
Maison Blanche.
Cette victoire ouvre une porte d'où s'échappe
une ruche humaine diversifiée et multicolore
faisant état de sa joie et de sa liberté avec
amour et humilité.Les larmes me sont sorties des
yeux et j'étais au bord de l'extase car,si les
groupes dits minoritaires ont un regain d'espoir,
une très grande partie de cette majorité
blanche silencieuse, par son choix pro-Obama,
a pu recouvrir sa rédemption en effacant de
son passé cette tare dont le poids affaiblissait
injustement l'américain noir et indirectement
l’Amérique toute entière.
Voici qu'une lueur de bonté renouvelle
l'espèrance et laisse apercevoir un ordre
nouveau ou règne le respect et le droit à une
vie décente.

TROP DE VERS DANS LE FRUIT
Aujourd’hui, certains pensent que Haïti, avec un
Président élu au suffrage universel, un
Gouvernement, un Parlement , une force de
police pour rechercher les auteurs des
infractions et des Tribunaux pour régler les
conflits sociaux, est une démocratie. Ceux-là
qui partagent cette idée se posent très
rarement la question du « comment ».
Comment fonctionnent toutes ces institutions ?
À travers les trois pouvoirs que sont l’Exécutif, le
Législatif et le Judiciaire qui constituent le
fondement même de l’État, nous avons une
accumulation de comportements qui sont
inacceptables. Tenez ! Quand, le plus
sérieusement du monde, le Gouvernement fait fi
des décisions judiciaires, que dans les couloirs
du Parlement on achète des votes ou qu’au
niveau des Tribunaux, la justice se vend aux
plus offrants…sommes-nous encore en
démocratie ?
On peut bien construire des lycées,
alphabétiser les masses rurales, former des
professionnels par dizaines de milliers;
l’Université peut se bien porter, les églises
peuvent être bondées, la tempérance peut
gagner du terrain, et la connaissance, au sens
large, se répandre à pas de géant ; mais tant
que la justice sera dans l’état d’abjection dans
lequel elle se trouve présentement, on ne
pourra compter sur un redressement moral dans
ce pays.
Les valeurs morales ne peuvent que régresser et
régresseront d’année en année ; le sentiment
populaire ne peut que se dégrader d’année en
année ; l’Exécutif, le Législatif et le Judiciaire ne
pourront, année en année, que se déconsidérer
aux yeux des honnêtes gens ; et d’année en
année, la mémoire des Pères de
l’Indépendance sera toujours plus outragée par
la mauvaise foi de leurs enfants dégénérés.
Croyez-moi, l’espoir de voir changer les choses
de l’intérieur s’amenuise de plus en plus. Une
autre Haïti n’est pas possible pour le moment
car les exceptions confirmant la règle de la
corruption sont en quantité trop négligeable.
Même ceux qui prétendent représenter la
population se laissent corrompre… Il y a trop de
vers dans le fruit.
Une autre Haïti sera possible quand chacun,
avec ses qualités intellectuelles et morales,
pourra accéder à n’importe quelle fonction
publique sans préalablement ramper et plier le
genou. Une autre Haïti sera possible quand le
Gouvernement s’engagera à lutter
véritablement contre la corruption, en
particulier, celle pratiquée aux plus hauts
niveaux, et à améliorer la transparence et
l’imputabilité.
Une autre Haïti sera possible quand la
production nationale sera relancée ; quand le
règne de l’impunité aura pris fin ; quand la
justice sera indépendante ; quand les
parlementaires impliqués notamment dans le
narcotrafic et les agents publics corrompus,
auteurs de malversations, seront traduits pardevant les tribunaux ; et quand les lois contre la
corruption, la drogue et le blanchiment d’argent
seront applicables à tous.
Quand tout homme de mérite aura droit à un
début de considération, alors nous croirons que
nos dirigeants sont en train de recouvrer la
raison. Mais tant que les choses restent comme
elles sont, qu’un homme seul pose sa main sur
toutes les fonctions de l’Etat, de la Magistrature
Suprême au simple gardien…rien ni personne
ne nous fera croire en des horizons meilleurs.
