Monsieur le Secr~taire g~n6ral,
La R~publique de C6te-d'Ivoire ayant acc~d le 7 aoit 1960 h la pleine et enti~re
ind~pendance, est d~sireuse d'assumer int~gralement les nouvelles responsabilitds
qui lui incombent sur le plan international et d'apporter sa cooperation aux activit~s
de la communaut6 des Nations Unies. Le Gouvernement de la R~publique de C6ted'Ivoire a donc d6cid6 de solliciter sans tarder l'admission de la R~publique de C6ted'Ivoire comme membre des Nations Unies.
Aussi, ai-je 'honneur de vous demander, au nom de mon gouvernement, de bien
l'Article 4 de la Charte des Nations Unies, soumettre la
vouloir, conform~ment
candidature de la R~publique de C6te-d'Ivoire aux d~lib6rations du Conseil de
s~curit6 en vue d'obtenir la recommandation n~cessaire 5. son inscription A l'ordre
du jour de la prochaine Assemblde g~ndrale.
Le Gouvernement de la R6publique de C6te-d'Ivoire d6clare, par la prdsente
lettre, accepter les obligations que comporte la Charte des Nations Unies et ftre en
mesure de les remplir. Il s'engage solennellement &s'y conformer en toute loyaut6
et conscience.
Je vous prie d'agr~er, Monsieur le Secr~taire g~n~ral, les assurances de ma tr~s
haute consideration.

CHARTER OF THE UNITED NATIONS. ABIDJAN,
7 AUGUST 1960

Sir,
The Republic of the Ivory Coast, having acceded on 7 August 1960 to full and
complete independence, wishes to assume all of the new responsibilities which have
devolved upon it at the international level and to co-operate in the activities of the
United Nations community. The Government of the Republic of the Ivory Coast
has therefore decided to apply without delay for the admission of the Republic of
the Ivory Coast to membership in the United Nations.
I therefore have the honour, on behalf of my Government and in accordance
with Article 4 of the Charter of the United Nations, to ask you to be good enough to
submit the candidature of the Republic of the Ivory Coast to the Security Council,
with a view to obtaining the necessary recommendation for the matter to be placed
on the agenda of the next General Assembly.
The Government of the Republic of the Ivory Coast hereby declares that it
accepts the obligations stipulated in the Charter of the United Nations and that it is
able to fulfil them. It solemnly undertakes to abide by those obligations in absolute
loyalty and good faith.

I Presented to the Secretary-General of the United Nations on 16 August 1960. By resolution 1484 (XV) adopted by the General Assembly at its 864th plenary meeting, on 20 September
1960, the Ivory Coast was admitted to membership in the United Nations.
