SCSU REAL ESTATE A L U M N I ASSOCIATION SCSU REAL ESTATE ALUMNI NEWSLETTER VOLUME 5, ISSUE 1 SPRING 2003 2003 SCSU REAA Winter Banquet: “Boogie-In” At The Fine Line Music Café. A special thank you to everyone who attended the 2003 SCSU REAA Winter Banquet on February 13th at The Fine Line Music Café. We had a great turnout of both alumni and current students! outing, make an effort to attend this year. Pebble Creek is a great golf course and the food is awesome! Stefanie Meyer (2002 to 2003 president), Ashley Ferguson scholarship recipient, Tony Kuechle (2003 to 2004 president) from left to right The evening began with a social hour followed by a wonderful buffet dinner and awards program. We were then entertained with music by the premiere superstar disco band of the Twin Cities, Boogie Wonderland. Thankfully we were able to have our Winter Banquet before The Fine Line went up in flames the following week. Congratulations to Marketplace Home Mortgage as they are the recipient of this year’s “Outstanding Corporate Support Award”. Since the company was established, Keith White of Marketplace has donated an incredible amount of money and resources to this Association and has hired numerous SCSU grads. Also congratulations to Ashley Ferguson, this years student scholarship recipient. Mark your calendars for the 2003 Golf Classic on th Thursday, August 7 at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker. If you weren’t able to attend last year’s golf We will be looking for a fresh change in venue for both the 2004 SCSU REAA Winter Banquet and 2004 Golf Classic, and we would love to get your feed back. Please drop me an email with any suggestions at [email protected]. Sincerely, Rob Loftus MOONEY’S MEMOS Hi all, We're just back from spring break and it's St. Patrick's Day. I don't know if many of you know, but the P. in Steven P. Mooney is for Patrick, after my father Patrick Mooney. While in Northern Ireland in 1993 I stood at St. Patrick's grave. My greatgrandfather (also Patrick Mooney) is one of twins who came over from Ireland during the potatoe famine in about 18xx, I can't remember when. This is already getting too long. Life at SCSU is fun and challenging. This is Dr. Gary Sneide's last year with us in the FIRE Dept., he is currently planning on getting back into the real estate industry. I want to thank Gary for six years of dedicated service to not only the Real Estate program at SCSU, but also to the Finance program. He has had a very positive impact on the many many students he served in his position. Thanks Gary! Unfortunately, thanks to our new governor's ill advised campaign promise, we will not be able to replace Gary next year. This means instead of our current 10 members in the FIRE Dept., we will be down to 9. Obviously, we can’t teach as many students • • • • • • • • • What’s In This Issue? The $60 million the governor is adding to the student grants program is coming out of the operating budgets of the U of M and MNSCU. But since 40% or 60% (I can't remember which) of that money goes to students at private colleges, it is a funding shift from public schools to private schools. That is not clear to most tax payers, I don't think that is the purpose of tax dollars. So, if you feel inclined to write a legislator that wouldn't be a bad thing. Major wise, we continue to grow. We currently have about 78 declared Real Estate majors. We'll have about 15-20 graduating this May. Some have jobs already, but most of them are still open to offers. Check your resume books and see who your firm may be interested in. Finally, I would like to thank Stacy Hemming for her many years of service on the Real Estate Alumni Board. She has been a tireless worker on behalf of the students of the real estate program. Stacy initiated the career nights put on for the students by the alums, which have turned out to be highly successful and are currently being handled, also quite successfully, by Jessica Morgan and Jesseka Zellmer. I believe that the growth in the program at SCSU can be partially attributed to the excellent work done by Stacy over these many years. Thanks Stacy! Scholarship Director Greg McMillian (952) 837-8577 [email protected] A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Alumni: I want to thank all of you who attended the Winter Banquet in Minneapolis. The event was once again well attended by both Alumni and Students. As I mentioned at the Banquet, I have two goals for our organization this year. The first is to expand and further strengthen the success of the Student Relations Program. I believe we can do this in two-fold, by volunteering to actively participate in the Mentor Banquet and/or mentoring existing students, and continuing to work with the students on information and career-orientated seminars to increase the enrollment. My second goal for 2003 is to continue to grow the Scholarship Fund. This year we were able to endow $10,000 for a self-funding scholarship due to the past generosity of the Alumni and profitability of prior alumni events. I ask for your continued support of the Scholarship Fund with direct financial assistance and attendance of the All-Alumni events. Sincerely, Tony Kuechle Student Relations Jessica Morgan (651) 603-5059 [email protected] Jesseka Zellmer (612) 436 - 2202 [email protected] Website Coordinator Brett Hall (651) 237-0404 [email protected] Historian Stephanie Nyhus (651) 296-0335 [email protected] SCSU Department Head Dr. Steve Mooney (320) 255-3074 [email protected] DR. SNEIDE SAYS FAREWELL As most of you know, I will not be returning to SCSU in the fall. And although academia has been my life for the past twenty-odd years, I will likely leave it in order to stay in the St. Cloud-Twin Cities area. At this writing my future is somewhat uncertain, but I am confident I will soon find a home for my skills and talents. As I leave SCSU, I leave with many fond memories of you all—those of you who were always alumni to me, and those of you who were first students to me and now are alumni. First off, I wish to thank those alums who took time out of their busy schedules to come back to St. Cloud to speak to my classes: The teams of Keith White/Jon Peterson and Stacy Hemming/Mike Petroske of Marketplace Home Mortgage; Keith Sturm of Upland Real Estate CONGRATS TO THIS YEAR’S GRADUATES December 2002 Matt Barnes Penny Benson Jon Bishop Francis Dourou Adrienne Garcia Jaime Huisenga Jason Lang May 2003 Calvin Belt Rob Bunch Kristin Greiner Tony Letizia Cory Mergen Seth Muller Amanda Novacek THE STUDENT CONNECTION DR. SNEIDE SAYS FAREWELL - CONTINUED We would first like to give a big THANK YOU to Deb Vannelli for her commitment to the Alumni Association. Deb has been part of the association for over seven years and has worked with Student Relations for approximately five years. During this time, Deb has shown her strong commitment to the organization by donating her time and successfully bringing the students and alumni together. Thanks for all of your work Deb! Group; and Jessica Morgan from Glaser Financial. Second, I want to publicly thank those of you, too numerous to mention, who come to St. Cloud time after time, year after year, to put on career nights, senior banquets, and other events for the SCSU real estate students. And last but far from least, I wish to thank those of you who have led and continue to lead the SCSU Real Estate Alumni Association. Without your leadership, none of these great things would be happening—you enrich this program so much! We held a Student Information Night at D.B. Searle’s on November 14th. We had one of the largest student turnouts to date. That night’s huge success can largely be attributed to the speakers. We would like to personally thank Beth Brown, Mark Moorhouse, Mike Petroske, Kurt Wilczek, Elizabeth Valentine, Deb Vannelli, and Stefanie Meyer for speaking as well as Stacy Hemming and Steve Mooney for helping organize the event. Additionally, thank you to all of the students who attended. We held a Graduation Dinner at Anton’s in St. Cloud on December 10th for all of the students graduating in the 2002-2003 school year. Approximately 24 students attended. FYI – there are always students searching for jobs or internships at the Student Information Nights and Graduation Dinner – it would be a great place for your company to seek out students to hire. Please let us know if you are interested in participating or if you have any job openings. The next Student Information Night will be held at D.B. Searle’s on April 17th. The Student Information Night is designed to give the students a better perspective of a broad range of careers available to Real Estate majors and to educate them of the real estate industry in general. Additionally, the Student Night allows Alumni and students to network and establish potential career opportunities. Jessica Morgan & Jesseka Zellmer Student Liaisons Perhaps the greatest reward of teaching is watching students come into the program as relatively naïve sophomores or juniors and become mature, competent, and knowledgeable graduates and successful alumi. Throughout that process, fond memories were generated. Here are a few (and I apologize if I forgot you— I’m beginning to have “senior moments”)…. Listening to the groans when you heard the name “Anita Bigg Loan” for the first time… watching the lights come on when you successfully created your first nested IF statement… doing my Buddy Holly imitation on the karaoke machine at Nate Arnold’s graduation party… watching Carl Awalt work a room and throw house parties… visiting Nathan Bliss in the hospital… trying to keep the two Tim Heilands separate… Nikola Blagojevic dog-sitting for me… Craig Theis telling jokes…Ryan Doyle’s internship presentation… the Doyle-JacobsHogan graduation party…Jeff Horstmann sleeping in class… Sara Leyk’s driving… the Dance Club Diva (you know who she is)… Jess Morgan trying to out-do Craig Theis… Erika Carlson, Josh Arsenault, Matt Gersemehl, and a host of others in the homecoming parade limo… getting a real Hawaiian flower lei from Alana Forlenza at graduation… Amanda Hotaling’s and Jesseka Zellmer’s grad party… Seth Muller riding me about quitting smoking (successfully, I might add)… Matt Barnes appraising my house… seeing pics of Corey Mergen in Chicago… Golf outings at Mooneys… and on and on. For the time being, I will be in Saint Cloud. Stop by or give a call if you get back to town—320-529-0167.
