Years of Textiles a
été réédité de
nombreuses fois
depuis les années 1990. Jennifer Harris,
directrice adjointe de la Whitworth
Art Gallery (université de Manchester,
Royaume-Uni), qui s’appuie sur ses recherches et celles d’autres experts, explore
neuf techniques utilisées de 3 000 avant
J.-C. à nos jours dans différentes régions et
sous-régions du monde. Elle décrit ces procédés avec une grande richesse d’illustration, privilégiant le dessin et les gros plans
photographiques. Un livre de référence à
redécouvrir.
Ce livre est la version papier de
l’exposition éponyme qui s’est
promenée
sur
plusieurs continents en 2010.
L’idée générale
du projet consiste
à s’interroger sur
la place de la production alimentaire dans la ville et à démontrer qu’agriculture urbaine et design
ne sont pas forcément incompatibles.
L’ouvrage présente la quarantaine de projets, parfois « ambitieux », parfois « simples », proposés par des architectes, des
urbanistes et des designers réunis par l’université Ryerson (Toronto), initiatrice de
l’exposition itinérante. Prochaine étape
de l’exposition : Providence (États-Unis)
et Casablanca (Maroc).

Smirnova est graphiste et illustratrice. Avec cet
ouvrage,
elle
semble s’être bien
amusée. Son objectif
initial :
démontrer que
n’importe quel
sujet, même le plus repoussant à tous
points de vue, est susceptible de rencontrer un large public, pourvu que l’art visuel
vienne le « sauver ». Voilà comment elle
s’est retrouvée à illustrer la vie des cancrelats (également connus sous les jolis noms
de « blattes » ou « cafards »), leur nuisance
et la façon de les chasser. Drôle et original,
le résultat s’avère aussi instructif, répondant donc à l’idée de départ de l’artiste. Il

Recounting 5,000 years in the history of textiles
in 300 pages is a veritable feat – one that was not attempted yesterday, for this 5,000 Years of Textiles
has been republished numerous times since the
1990s. Jennifer Harris, Deputy Director of Whitworth Art Gallery (University of Manchester, United
Kingdom) relies on her own research and that of
other experts to explore nine techniques used since
3,000 B.C. to the present day in different regions
and sub-regions of the world. Her descriptions
of these procedures are richly illustrated, with a
preference for drawings and photo close ups.
A reference book to rediscover.
This book is the paper version of the exhibition
of the same name that travelled to several continents in 2010. The project’s general idea is to reflect
on the role of food production in cities and to show
that urban agriculture and design are not necessarily incompatible. The work presents some forty projects, at times “ambitious”, at times “simple”,
offered by architects, city planners and designers
brought together by Ryerson University (Toronto),

art comes to “save” it. Here’s how she came to illustrate the life of cockroaches, their hazards and how
to get rid of them. Funny and original, the result
is also instructive, thus meeting the artist’s original
aim. A work that will please the young and old
