Datenverlust auftreten. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS www.conrad.com Version 06/04 PCMCIA Adapter for USB 2.0 and A-ATA ° Item-No. 97 44 89 Intended Use This product is intended for installation in a PC-compatible notebook with a card-bus-compatible PCMCIA slot and there it makes additional USB 2.0 and S-ATAS interfaces available. Scope of delivery • PCMCIA card • Power adapter cable for PS/2 port • Driver data carriers • Operating instructions Features • 32-bit card-bus-compatible PCMCIA port necessary for operation; older notebooks with PC card PCMCIA port do not recognise the PCMCIA card • Two USB 2.0 ports (USB1.1-compatible) • Two S-ATA ports • Power supply via PS/2 port special cable • If the PCMIIA card is, for example, left in the notebook when you are on the road, although it is not being used, power consumption by the PCMCIA card could reduce the accumulator service life of your notebook. • It is of no consequence which of the USB2.0 ports or S-ATA ports you use first. • USB devices and also 1392 devices can be plugged in and unplugged while in operation. Therefore you do not have to switch off your PC if you wish to plug in or unplug devices (with other interfaces this can cause damage, e.g. if you plug in or unplug a PS/2 mouse when the PC is in operation). However, if you unplug the USB plug when data transfer is taking place on the USB/1394 port, e.g. if an external drive is sending data to the PC, Windows could crash with data being corrupted! • In Windows ME/XP, an icon with an arrow displayed in the menu bar appears for many USB2.0 devices. You can use this feature to "disconnect" the USB device from the PC, i.e. to inform the PC that it should close open files. After that, the USB device (e.g. and external hard disk) can be disconnected or unplugged without risk. • Of course the USB2.0 ports also support USB1.1. Therefore conventional "slow" USB devices can also be plugged in here. These do not become quicker in operation on a USB2.0 port. • If you want to operate the USB2.0 devices using a USB hub, a USB2.0 hub is required. The high-speed operation of USB2.0 does not function with a conventional USB1.1 hub. The USB2.0 devices will then operate at the "normal" USB1.1 speed. • No special "USB2.0 cable" is normally necessary for faultless USB2.0 operation. Conventional "normal" USB cables are perfectly adequate, however, they must be sheathed. If transmission problems occur during operation of USB2.0 devices, a USB cable which has been tested in USB2.0 operation ("USB2.0-certified") can be tried. In solchen Fällen erlischt jeder Garantieanspruch. Windows ME oder XP). The warranty will lapse in case of damage caused by failure to comply with these operating instructions! We shall not be liable for any consequential loss! For safety and licensing (CE) reasons, unauthorised conversion and/or modifications to the product are not permitted. Handle the product with care. It can be damaged through impact, blows or by being dropped even from a low height. Connection • Switch off your notebook. • Connect the supplied PS/2-power adapter cable to a free PS/2 mouse or keyboard port of your notebook and with the PCMCIA card ☞ The USB2.0 device connected to the PCMCIA card will not function without this power supply. However, this is dependent on the USB devices connected. If your PC does not have a PS/2-interface, a plug-in power unit can also be used for the power supply of the PCMCIA card (not included in the scope of delivery). This has to have stabilised direct current of +5V= and be able to supply current of approx. 1A. The internal contact must bear "+" ("Plus"). • With an external S-ATA hard disk or S-ATA hard disk, formatting/partitioning is possible with Windows 98SE/ME as a rule using the MS-DOS commands FDISK and FORMAT. With Windows XP, the computer management is to be used. • Only one single SATA device can be connected to each S-ATA port. • There are adapters for conventional IDE/ATAPI devices (e.g. the IDE hard disk) to operate them on an S-ATA interface. • For large hard disks (from approx. 137GByte), a suitable operating system is necessary for this (e.g. Windows XP with service pack 1). With older operating systems, data loss can occur if this limit is exceeded (if, that is, more than approx. 130-140GByte data are written on the hard disk). Any partitioning into smaller parts has no positive effects in this case. • To remove the PCMCIA card, there are usually pushbuttons alongside the PCMCIA slot. By pressing the pushbutton, you separate PCMCIA card from the PCMCIA plug on the inside of the computers and push a small piece out. The PCMCIA card can then be extracted. • Switch on the notebook and start the operating system. Wait until it has booted completely (e.g. Windows ME or XP). • Insert the PCMCIA card correctly into the PCMCIA port of the notebook. If necessary, read the operating instructions for your notebook with respect to how you can insert PCMCIA cards correctly. If your notebook has several PCMCIA ports, it is normally of no consequence which of the PCMCIA ports you use. • If, in spite of correct insertion in the PCMCIA port, the PCMCIA card is not recognised, you notebook probably has no card-bus-PCMCIA port (occurs often with older notebooks with less than 400MHz), but only a PC card PCMCIA port. The PCMCIA card can unfortunately not be operated! You could possibly take another notebook to test it. To install drivers Windows recognises the PCMCIA card automatically. Insert the supplied data carrier into the appropriate drive and follow all the Windows instructions. Windows must then be restarted. Tips and information • It is possible that, for installation of the USB2.0 part of the plug-in card under Windows XP, the service pack 1 is necessary. If there are no USB 2-0-drivers on the supplied driver data carriers, install the service pack 1 which you can obtain from the manufacturer "Microsoft". We do accept any liability for personal injury or damage to property caused by incorrect handling or non-observance of the safety instructions! The guarantee will lapse in such cases. • USB operation is not possible in Windows safe mode. USB keyboards and a USB mouse do not normally work. The BIOS/setup of your main board possibly offers USB support for a USB keyboard or mouse ("Legacy USB support"). Often, however, the USB keyboard/mouse has to be connected directly to a USB port of the main board and not to the combination card or a USB hub.
