ANG-7150/LIT-7112 Special Subject: The Sixties in American Literature
Description:
The 1960s was a tumultuous decade in US History, for it witnessed the effervescence of a
variety of groups who refused the political and cultural identity forced upon them by the
power structures. With the rise of civil rights and consciousness movements, Black
Power, an emerging Third World perspective in the Bay Area that included Chicanos,
Asian Americans, Native Americans, and Samoans to name a few, the LGBT community
affirming its rights, the labour movement, and the Vietnam war that traumatized and
divided the nation, it is inevitable that literature became an outlet for the plurality of
contesting voices. The sixties represent a moment where these groups refused the
narrative of the American Way of Life, which is anchored by the American Dream.
Historically excluded and refusing marginalization, these groups developed their own
canons as they affirmed their history and culture.
This seminar will focus on the literature of these groups in an effort to map the various
geographies that defined the 1960s. We will be analyzing works belonging to the Black
Arts Movement, the Chicano Movement, the anti-war movement, the labour movement,
the New Left, the LGBT community, the peace and love/consciousness movement
through a vast array of genres and themes. We will also study music, film, and various
artefacts of the era in order to grasp the essence of what artists promulgated.
