Galerie Agnès Monplaisir is pleased to present the solo exhibition by Mia FonssagrivesSolow, From Mythology to Robots, opening October 14th. In this exhibition, FonssagrivesSolow explores the intersection of mythology and technology in our lives through both
sculpture and fine jewelry, capturing her stunning artistic mastery in the mediums
of wood and metal, as well as her creativity and style as a designer. Drawing from
her signature playful aesthetic, her series of abstract wooden torsos re-interprets the
traditional sculptures and legends of Ancient Greece, while her bronze and aluminum
robots translates both legendary mythological figures and the personalities of influential
people the artist has known through the lens of technology. Fonssagrives-Solow’s
industrial chic fine jewelry adapts these same forms through precious stones and metals,
creating stunningly unique pieces of wearable art. The entire collection is layered with
the characteristic humor and vibrancy of Fonssagrives- Solow’s work, as these ancient
legends are exhumed and reinvigorated for the modern age.

Particularly drawn to early African art, Fonssagrives-Solow also shares in this exhibition
a special connection with the artistic representation of King Behazin of Dahomey. It
was Fonssagrives-Solow’s great-grandfather, Captain Jean-Baptist Fonssagrives, who
brought the first early African art to Paris, including a large sculpture of King Behazin.
These were same pieces that drew the attention of Picasso and Braque, greatly
influencing the evolution of modern art. In this collection of playful, contemporary
sculpture Fonssagrives-Solow gives a nod to the influences and great works of art from
the past, translating these ideas through her own personal and futuristic lens. These
works are at once mechanistic and viscerally human.
Mia Fonssagrives-Solow is an internationally celebrated artist and designer. As the
daughter of photographer Fernand Fonssagrives and super model Lisa Fonssagrives, as
well as the step-daughter of Irving Penn, Mia was born into and molded by a world of
art and design. She has exhibited work throughout the U.S. and Paris and has graced the
pages of many lauded publications, such as W, Elle, Instyle, Harper’s Bazaar and Artnet.

La Galerie Agnès Monplaisir est heureuse de présenter l’exposition solo From Mythology
to Robots de l’artiste New-Yorkaise Mia Fonssagrives-Solow. Dans cette exposition,
Fonssagrives-Solow explore l’intersection entre mythologie et technologie à travers la
sculpture et la joaillerie, capturant sa superbe maîtrise artistique des deux médiums, le
bois et le métal, tout comme sa créativité et son style en tant que designer. Dessinée
avec humour et esthétisme, sa série de torses abstraits en bois ré-interprète la sculpture
traditionelle et les légendes de la Grèce Antique, tandis que les robots en bronze et
aluminium prennent la forme de figures légendaires mythologiques. Les bijoux d’une
extrême finesse de Fonssagrives-Solow reprennent les mêmes concepts figuratifs taillés
dans la pierre précieuse et le métal, créant de véritables pièces uniques. L’ensemble de
la collection est teintée de l’humour, caractéristique de l’art de Fonssagrives, comme ces
figures antiques exhumées et transposées dans l’age moderne.

Particulièrelement attirée par les Arts Premiers d’Afrique, Fonssagrives-Solow propose
aussi dans cette exposition une connection toute spéciale avec les représentations
artistiques du roi Behazin de Dahomey. Son arrière grand-père, le Capitaine JeanBaptist Fonssagrives, apporta à Paris les premières oeuvres d’art d’Afrique Primitive
—dont une grande sculpture représentant le roi Behazin. Ces mêmes pièces attirèrent
à l’époque l’attention de Picasso et Braque, à l’origine de l’évolution de l’art moderne
au début du siècle dernier. Dans cette collection ludique, les sculptures contemporaines
de Fonssagrives-Solow apparaissent comme un clin d’oeil aux grandes oeuvres d’art du
passé, transposant ses idées à travers son propre objectif personnel et futuriste. Des
sculptures à la fois mécaniques et viscéralement humaines.
Mia Fonssagrives-Solow est une artiste et designer reconnue internationalement. Fille
du photographe Fernand Fonssagrives et de la top model Lisa Fonssagrives, as well
as the belle-fille d’Irving Penn, Mia est née dans le monde de l’art et du design. Elle a
exposé son travail aux USA et à Paris et a reçu de nombreux hommages dans plusieurs
publication comme W, Elle, Instyle, Harper’s Bazaar et Artnet.
