What is human trafficking?
Ozark Henry: Every day, human
beings are trafficked and sold
around the world, even in Europe.
They are trapped through sexual
exploitation, forced labour,
domestic servitude, child begging
and even the removal of organs.

What have you done to
support UNODC?
OH: I want to educate myself more
on the issue of human trafficking
and be aware of what’s happening.
UNODC has given me insight
into the international situation,
and I have met with the Belgian
NGOs supporting victims and also
with legislators to understand
the complexity of prosecuting
the traffickers. As a goodwill
ambassador, it’s my duty to share
these insights with my audience
at concerts, in interviews and on
social media. As an artist, I also

want to use my work to raise
awareness on this crime and
the human rights violations
that go on every day.
What we can do as individuals?
OH: I encourage everyone to
join the Blue Heart Campaign, an
awareness-raising initiative that
aims to increase understanding of
the issue of trafficking. Trafficking
is a hidden crime, but it becomes
more visible if people learn how
to recognise it.

La traite des êtres humains constitue aujourd’hui une problématique grave qui
concerne le monde entier. Entretien avec Ozark Henry, ambassadeur de bonne
volonté de l’ONUDC pour la Belgique, sur la sensibilisation du grand public aux
questions relatives à la traite des êtres humains.
Mensenhandel is vandaag een wijdverbreid en zeer reëel fenomeen. We
spraken met Ozark Henry, nationaal goodwillambassadeur van het UNODC
voor België, over de nood aan meer aandacht voor mensenhandel.
Que faut-il entendre par « traite des êtres humains » ?
Ozark Henry: Chaque jour, des êtres humains sont exploités ou vendus à
travers le monde, y compris en Europe. Ils sont victimes de trafiquants et
forcés à l’exploitation sexuelle ou à la prostitution, au travail forcé, à l’esclavage
domestique, à la mendicité des enfants ou au prélèvement d’organes.
Comment se traduit votre engagement en faveur de l’ONUDC ?
O.H.: Je veux continuer à m’informer sur les réalités de la traite des êtres
humains. L’ONUDC m’a permis de mieux appréhender la situation à l’échelle
internationale. En outre, j’ai rencontré des ONG belges d’aide aux victimes et
participé à des réunions avec des législateurs afin de mieux comprendre la
complexité des questions de pénalisation et de la poursuite des trafiquants.
En tant qu’ambassadeur de bonne volonté, il est de mon devoir de partager
mon expérience et mes connaissances sur cette problématique avec le
grand public lors de mes concerts, à l’occasion d’entretiens ou à travers
les médias sociaux. En tant qu’artiste, je veux également utiliser mon travail
pour sensibiliser un maximum de personnes au sujet de ces crimes et des
violations des droits de l’homme.
Que pouvons-nous faire en tant qu’individus ?
O.H. :J’encourage chacun à rejoindre la campagne Cœur Bleu, une initiative
qui vise à mobiliser l’opinion contre la traite des êtres humains. La campagne
Cœur Bleu a pour objet d’inspirer les gens à agir contre ces crimes trop
souvent ignorés.

Wat is mensenhandel?
Ozark Henry: Elke dag worden overal ter wereld mensen als handelswaar
verkocht, zelfs in Europa. Ze zijn het slachtoffer van seksuele uitbuiting,
dwangarbeid en huisslavernij. Kinderen worden gedwongen om te bedelen,
mensen worden beroofd van hun organen.
Wat doe jij om het UNODC te steunen?
O.H.: Ik verdiep mij in de problematiek. Via het UNODC kreeg ik zicht op
de internationale situatie, in België bezocht ik ngo’s die de slachtoffers
helpen en woonde ik vergaderingen bij met politici om inzicht te
krijgen in hoe moeilijk het is om mensenhandelaars te bestraffen. Als
goodwillambassadeur is het mijn taak om die kennis te delen met mijn
publiek tijdens concerten, in interviews en op de sociale media. Als artiest
wil ik mijn werk gebruiken om de aandacht te vestigen op deze misdaad en
flagrante schending van de mensenrechten.
Wat kunnen we doen als individu?
O.H.: Ik moedig iedereen aan om de ‘Blue Heart’-campagne te steunen,
waarmee we aandacht willen vestigen op mensenhandel en er meer inzicht in
willen geven. Het fenomeen speelt zich af in de schaduw, maar komt sneller
aan het licht als mensen het leren te herkennen.
