Alain Strowel is a Belgian avocat since 1988 and works in the Brussels office of Covington &
Burling. Alain Strowel's practice concentrates on intellectual property, media and information
technology law. He has litigated many IP-related cases before the Belgian courts (IP
enforcement, ISP liability, protection of slogans, trademarks issues, comparative advertising),
and has as well appeared before the European Court of Justice and the European Patent
Office. Alain Strowel has particular expertise in issues relating to digital copyright. He is a
panelist for the WIPO and the “.be” domain name resolution procedures. Prior to joining
Covington & Burling LLP in 2001, he worked in the Brussels IP section of the Dutch firm
NautaDutilh.
Alain serves as a professor at the Saint-Louis University (Brussels), the University of Liège and
the Catholic University of Brussels-Leuven, where he mainly teaches copyright and design law.
He is an active member of various IP associations, including the Licensing Executive Society,
ALAI, European Patent Lawyers Association, Computer Law Association. He is member of the
editorial board of many specialised law journals including: Propriétés intellectuelles (Paris),
Journal of Intellectual Property Law & Practice (Oxford), Computer Law Review International
(Köln), Auteurs et Media (Brussels), L'Ingénieur-Conseil (Brussels), Les Cahiers de propriété
intellectuelle (Montréal).
Alain graduated in law (1983) and obtained a Ph. D. in law (1992) from the University of
Louvain-la-Neuve. In addition, he obtained graduate degrees in economics (1984) and
philosophy (1985). He has authored numerous articles and a few books, including "Droit
d'auteur et copyright" (LGDJ and Bruylant, 1993) and "Droit d'auteur et numérique: logiciels,
bases de données, multimédia" (Bruylant, 2001). He has edited various books among which:
"Of Authors and Origins" (with Brad Sherman, Clarendon Press, 1994), "Prévention et
réparation des dommages causés par les médias" (with Fr. Tulkens, Larcier, 1998), "Droit
d’auteur et liberté d’expression" (with Fr. Tulkens, Larcier, 2006), and « Nouveautés en matière
d’expertise et de propriété intellectuelle » (with P. Jadoul, Larcier, 2007).
