Do you think there might be Guiding there? • How do you think Guiding there might be similar to or different from Guiding in Canada? A map of the world might help you with this discussion. Activity 2: Trinidad (20 minutes) The Girl Guide Association in Trinidad is called: The Girl Guides Association of Trinidad and Tobago. The age groups are: Brownie Guide -‐ aged 6 to 9, Junior Guide -‐ aged 9 to 12, Senior Guide -‐ aged 12 to 15, Ranger -‐ aged 15 to 18. Point Trinidad out on your map so that girls can see where it is. Leatherback turtles are native to Trinidad. They love to eat jellyfish, but sometimes they mistake plastic bags on the beach for this tasty treat. Since this is very dangerous for them, Girl Guides in that area will collect plastic bags on the beaches to protect the turtles. This craft comes from http://www.guidingjewels.ca/sparks/crafts/214-‐craft-‐turtle. Pre-‐cut large Styrofoam balls in half using a Popsicle stick. Pre-‐paint them green or let the girls do this at the meeting if you want to spread these activities over 2 weeks or a camp. Pre-‐cut the turtle bases by tracing around the half-‐balls and adding feet and a tail. Have your girls glue the balls to the bases and glue on the pompoms as heads and googly eyes. They can then decorate the turtles with glitter glue and/or paint. 2 Activity 3: China
(20 minutes) The only part of China where there are Girl Guides is Hong Kong. The Spark-‐aged girls there are called “Happy Bees”. The Happy Bee promise is: I am a Happy Bee. I love my family. I love my friends. I love nature. Can your Sparks remember their promise? Give each girl a pair of chopsticks and have her try to pick up a variety of small objects (mini-‐marshmallows, small pieces of paper, hair elastics, jellybeans). They can use proper chopstick technique or invent their own method. After they have tried for a few minutes, ask some questions: • Which shapes were easier to pick up? • Do you think you would be able to use chopsticks to eat your meals? Play a quick game to see whether girls have mastered using chopsticks. Split the girls into 2 groups and have a race. For each team, place two bowls on a table: one empty and one with jellybeans. See which team can transfer the most jellybeans in a set amount of time. Activity 4: Kenya and South Africa (10 minutes) In Kenya Sparks are called Rainbows. They wear a red dress with a blue scarf. Nearby, in South Africa, the Spark-‐aged girls are called Teddies. The Teddy motto is: Teddies always try. The Teddy promise is: I promise to care and share. Both of these countries have lions, so now seems like a perfect time to sing about going on a lion hunt. (Leader sings a line, everyone repeats. During each verse, everyone slaps their hands on their knees in
a rhythm as if they were marching.)
Goin' on a lion hunt!
I'm not afraid!
3 Look at all the beautiful flowers.
Oh-oh!
Tall, tall grass ahead!
Can't go over it!
Can't go under it!
Can't go around it!
Gotta go through it!
(everyone does actions as if parting long grass)
Goin' on a lion hunt!
I'm not afraid!
Look at all the beautiful flowers.
Oh-oh!
Icky, sticky, mud ahead!
Can't go over it!
Can't go under it!
Can't go around it!
Gotta go through it!
(actions as if you were trying to slog through mud)
Goin' on a lion hunt!
I'm not afriad!
Look at all the beautiful flowers.
Oh-oh!
Deep, wide, river ahead!
Can't go over it!
Can't go under it!
Can't go around it!
Guess we gotta swim it!
(actions as if swimming)
Goin' on a lion hunt!
I'm not afraid!
Look at all the beautiful flowers.
4 Oh-oh!
Tall, tall trees ahead!
Can't go over them!
Can't go under them!
Can't go around them!
Guess we gotta climb them!
(actions as if climbing up one side of a tree and down the other)
Goin' on a lion hunt!
I'm not afraid!
Look at all the beautiful flowers.
Oh-oh!
Deep, dark cave ahead!
Can't go over it!
Can't go under it!
Can't go around it!
Gotta go through it!
(next verse is done very, very quietly, as if you were scared of the cave)
Goin' on a lion hunt...
I'm not afraid...
Look at all the beautiful flowers...
Oh-oh...
I see two shining eyes...
I feel something furry...
I feel a big, c-c-cold nose...
I feel sh-sh-sharp teeth...
It's a LION! RUN!!
(slapping on knees goes very fast, as if you were running... go through all the obstacles in reverse
order and as fast as you can, with more slapping of hands on knees in between each obstacle.)
Out of the cave!
Run!!
Up the trees!
5 Down the trees!
Run!!!
Swim the river!
Run!!
Through the mud!
Run!!
Through the grass!
Run!!
HOME!
