La Fondation EPFL-WISH (Women in Science and Humanities Foundation), constituée sur
l’initiative des professeures de l’EPFL, a pour but de favoriser la recherche et la promotion des
femmes de l’Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Parmi d’autres actions, la
Fondation décerne chaque année le Prix Erna Hamburger couronnant une carrière féminine
exemplaire dans les sciences. Erna Hamburger, personnalité remarquable, était ingénieure électricienne et docteur ès sciences techniques. Elle fut la première femme nommée professeure
ordinaire à l’Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne.
Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard est une généticienne pionnière qui a reçu le Prix Nobel de physiologie ou médecine en 1995 pour ses travaux
sur le contrôle génétique du développement précoce de l’embryon. Elle est diplômée en biochimie de l’Université Eberhard Karls de Tübingen
et a obtenu son doctorat en génétique de la même institution. Depuis 1985, elle est directrice de l’Institut Max Planck pour la biologie du
développement à Tübingen. Elle a créé en 2004 la Fondation Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard pour pallier les difficultés auxquelles sont
confrontées les femmes scientifiques devant concilier vie professionnelle et vie privée. Cette fondation a pour but de permettre aux jeunes
femmes engagées dans la recherche scientifique de réussir leur carrière tout en ayant une famille.
Erna Hamburger Prize
Nobel Prize winner, Professor Dr. Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard, is one of the most pre-eminent biologists of the 20th Century. She is known
for her groundbreaking discoveries about how genes control the early development of embryos for which she was awarded the Nobel Prize
in Physiology or Medicine in 1995. Born in 1942 in the Eastern German city of Magdeburg, she earned her degree in biochemistry at the
Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen and her doctorate in genetics from the same university. In 1975, she began studying biological morphogenesis, and pursued this line of research at several institutions around Europe over the six following years. In 1981, she returned to Tübingen,
where, in 1985, she became director of the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology. In 2004, she established the Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard
Foundation to support the careers of women in science and research. This foundation provides financial support to highly qualified young
women with children in order to ease the difficult burden of balancing family obligations with the duties of an independent researcher.
EPFL-WISH Foundation (Women in Science and Humanities Foundation) was established
on the initiative of the female professors of EPFL with the aim of encouraging the research
and promotion of women at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Among
other actions, each year the Foundation acknowledges the accomplishments of a distinguished
personality by attributing the Erna Hamburger Prize to a woman in science or engineering who
has greatly influenced and shaped her field. Dr Erna Hamburger a remarkable personality, was
the first woman promoted to the rank of full professor at EPFL.
